Those people who support these bad policies have lost their humanity and show us the evil side of our society. We have so much in this country. We need people to fill new jobs created. I remember when the political campaign of Ronald Reagan started using the flag in its campaign rallies, in backgrounds, and in advertisements - everywhere. It was jarring and seemed inappropriate that one candidate was trying to assert that the flag was theirs more than the other guy’s and that patriots would therefore vote republican. A very few commentators called it out but it seems to me that that was the moment a resurgent nationalism began to go mainstream in the modern era. When there was hysteria going around a few years later for Gulf War I, my WWII vet dad told me he was buying me a one-way ticket to Australia if a draft happened, as no son of his would die for these tinpot chickenhawk non-veterans etcs.

In this county the sheriffs are bad as the thugs. There is currently a sheriff that is being tried for manslaughter for shooting into a car in a neighboring county. Another sheriff was doing evictions & collecting rent while on duty for her dad & killed someone and if memory serves me correct a sheriff on gang taskforce or school resource officer was arrested for stealing steroids and raping a woman a few years ago.

You’d be surprised. A guy I respected debated me when I thought my mind was made up about something. I debated that way, but I kept thinking about what he said after. Researched his claims. Soul searched

I'm from Vermont and unlike alot of other places in the country we have officers that still travel around on foot through high traffic areas so they know most of the locals and often stop and bs with them. Many of them are angry about the Parkland ruling about it not being part of the officer's duty to protect those kids and the staff. They are also ashamed he didn't even try. The ones I've talked to couldn't imagine letting their neighbors get gunned down like that especially kids.
Every place in this country has asshole cops but there are very few places where the cops still integrate with the locals and are part of the community. I miss those times.
Now they are passing a law in Florida to give police officers stand your ground, which makes no sense to me
Also their talking about arming teachers to protect the children until officers arrive or eventually try to rescue the innocent

But given that cops aren't being trained to use military equipment I doubt they will train the teachers so it's going to be a train wreck.

People bash Maria Cantwell, largely for her unwavering support for Bernie and the Progressive party she helped found. But in Washington it is extremely difficult to get a gun permit or a gun. So there aren't issues with school shootings in Washington. The legislation that made it illegal to sell guns locally without going through the state and county was put into motion by Maria as was the education reform. Washington is now second in the nation in education. Elizabeth created the same gun control laws in Massachusetts. So Washington and Massachusetts are the two states where gun violence is lowest. Vermont is working on similar gun control laws. But these are heavily progressive states. It's why I'd vote for any true progressive, that includes the 3 founders, Sharrod Brown, Ro Khanna, Tulsi Gabbard and AOC to name the founders and leaders. But think how few people that is. Seven people total. Imagine how hard it is for them to effect change when both the corporate Democrats and the Republicans are opposed to everything you do. I feel Andrew Gillium would have been good for Florida

You brought tears to my eyes as you spoke of the heroism of those fallen police officers because I realized that there are truly good cops willing to put their lives on the line, regardless of the race, immigration status, ideology, the whatever, of the people they are protecting, to the degree that they will do that for the racist bigot who would despise them in any other circumstances.
