• Animated starship tour...
A brief video (2:35) of a fictional, work-in-progress “Sparrow” class starship that might have existed in Starfleet during the old show (TOS) era of Star Trek. This model is under construction. Please subscribe for updates.
The goal is to design and virtually construct a starship that embodies the familiar Enterprise configuration of a saucer, secondary hull and warp nacelles…in as small a vessel form as practical; sort of a “mini-Enterprise”.
In time I plan to export a completed model into a shared, virtual environment however I have yet to learn unreal engine, etc. I also plan to build a physical, scale model once the virtual model’s exterior is finalised.
This compact yet fast and manoeuvrable class of vessel is inspired by Constitution, Daedalus, Pioneer and Nova class starships. Its mission profile is as a science vessel performing short-range scouting and surveying missions.
The Sparrow class might also serve as a training vessel.
The crew complement is 47: Captain, Ship’s Doctor, 4 additional senior officers (Science, Security, Engineering and Communications), 8 junior officers, 9 ensigns and 24 enlisted crewmen.
Length = 70m / 240’
Width = 29.3m /96’
Height = 19.5m / 64’
The Sparrow class starship features 4 decks:
- Deck 1: Bridge, emergency hatch, Captain’s quarters, situation room, emergency batteries, computer cores (P&S), deuterium tanks, matter injector, warp governor, shuttle bay control & observation room, cargo storage, shield emitters, dorsal phaser banks.
- Deck 2: Crew’s quarters, sickbay, galley, mess & recreation hall, sonic showers, armoury, lifeboats (6 x 8 person), navigational deflector, deflector control room, engineering and warp core reactor, shuttle bay (including a single class F shuttlecraft), airlocks, cargo transporter, fabrication bays (P&S), impulse reactors and control rooms (P&S).
- Deck 3: Transporter rooms (2 x 4 person P&S), shield generator room, science labs (1-4), atmospheric processor, tractor beam emitter, emergency batteries, subspace tranceiver, water storage.
- Deck 4: Astrometric labs (P&S), antimatter injector and storage pods, warp core ejection system, planetary sensors, long-range sensors, launch tube (probes and beacons) control room, waste processor.

Medical next to Gally. Very convenient, remove a liver pass it next door, serve for dinner. No Waste.
Or if there’s an outbreak of food poisoning in the galley not far to go for medical relief!
😂
This is a slightly larger shuttle, with emphasis on having a large bar, a shuttle bay, a short elevator, and a light-show.
Clearly designed for sex-slave trade.
Wonderful work, Love the idea of a 'compact' class starship. Always used to 'play' that I was on the Galileo rather than the Enterprise as a child.
I like lots of different spaceships but I’ve always been most interested in the small to mid-sized ships. I think they’re great vessels for storytelling and maybe more personal than a ship of thousands?
Thanks for following the journey!
Adorable . Make more ships please
Thank you for the kind feedback! I’m working to complete this little starship and have plans for more. I plan to export to Blender or similar once completed for uploading to a virtual environment. Thanks again!

in the 2250's, casual clothes were favored over Starfleet uniforms.
Making first contact while wearing T shirts and casual dress took the stress out of the situation.
Nice Starship design.
J,
Thank you for your humorous and understanding feedback! Yes, things are likely much more casual on the smaller ships I imagine.
Much of what’s depicted here will be improved and updated over time. Using an old version of Sketchup for starters.
Plan to share updates here. I’m also building a 1:96 scale model concurrently.
Thanks again! -A
I'm actually quite enthralled by how you make your ship appear to be flying.
Thanks man. I only know the “scenes” feature for shifting views but I think there’s a camera function in Sketchup maybe does something similar.
I am mostly trying to emulate the fly-bys that one sees in the shows and also avoiding showing the incomplete portions of my model lol.
Thank you for the positive feedback.
@@AJFisherDesign Thank you. I might take a crack at trying to figure that out.
@@Ron-yj4rh you definitely should. I’m sure there are CZcams videos on how to use “scenes” in Sketchup. It’s not hard to learn and I find it provides a lot of fine tune control when I want to create an animation for sharing online or exporting to a video production software.
I'd love to see this adapted for the Star Trek Enterprise era. This is a beautiful design.
Thanks for the kind feedback. It’s been a lot of fun design/building this ship.
In time I plan to share the completed model & blueprints online so others can build on it or maybe 3D print it.

Interesting ship 🚢 🤔
Thank you for the feedback. My first attempt at Star Trek starship design though I’ve drawn lots of spaceships. Hoping to learn Blender in time to take this to the next level.
I love ot. And the compact size is unique for a star ship.
This is great, and that tiny warp core is adorable XD
Thanks for the view and positive vibes.
This has been a fun project to develop and share. The warp core is prob my favorite part of the ship. I’ve installed a couple dedicated warp plasma conduits to feed the EPS grid.
I’ve also added a cargo transporter which is a fun feature for storytelling I imagine.
You might enjoy the most recent animation I shared as it includes a starfield, some sound effects and title cards. I’m learning (hopefully) to make better videos to share:

Pretty cool little ship. I'll be interested to see her when her skin is on. 🖖😎
Thank you for the kind words. I’m a fan of the small ships esp TOS era. They didn’t show many but they must’ve been out there!

Very cool. A 3d print would be fun to paint.
Thanks for checking out the project and commenting.
I agree a 3D print would be fun to paint. In time I plan to learn how to export this model to various environments.
I am building a scale model of this while I’m building the virtual one. It’s 1:96 scale. Will try to post a pic.

Awesome !
Thank you for the positive feedback. It’s an ongoing labour of love.
Simple graphics but still, nice design for a small ship, or any ship for that matter.
Thank you for the viewing and feedback. I’m being guided by my sense of how a small TOS era starship might be configured. When complete I’m planning to import this model into a program or environment or something more photorealistic. Thanks again!
I've always wanted to see a small federation ship, and there it is! Lovely. Keen to see more of this.
Thank you for the feedback on my TOS inspired starship. I’m a fan of small ships and always wanted to see one on the old show. This has been a months-long project.

To paraphrase Will Riker 'That's a fat little ship', but really do like the exterior, showing the interior space really helps to sell the overall design, speaking of Riker, did I see a character (0: 53) with his leg up...?
Thank you for the kind feedback. I’ve always enjoyed the few cutaway posters I’ve seen of starships.
Yes, there’s a placeholder figure in the captains chair reminds a bit of Riker. In time I plan to replace the figures with more Starfleet looking personnel.
Updated video posted this AM!
Very good work, the concept and presentation!
Thank you for the kind feedback.
This is my first serious attempt at virtual design in a Star Trek setting. It’s been a lot of fun and I’m learning more and more about how to improve my models and videos.

Very nice!
I make physical Kitbashed and trash-bashed models of starships, and I tend to make more compact designs! It's good to see one fleshed out. I don't use 3D software, so I use Visio to map out the deck plans.
Thank you for the kind feedback and view.
I also have made a few kitbash models in my time. I enjoy physical models as well as building virtually. Each has its own unique set of skills but there’s some overlap. I will have to check out Visio as others have mentioned it.

See you “Out There!”
The design is very nice, but the ship is meant for very short trips right?
Because i didnt see any beds or restrooms :)
Thanks for the kind feedback.
Yes, it is short range. The beds and bathrooms aren’t installed yet. Crew quarters around the outer edge of saucer with shared sonic showers and bathrooms except for captain. I’ll be posting an updated video soon.
This is fantastic. Would love to see more. Might I suggest moving the mess hall down to the observation deck and combine the two down there and convert the space in the saucer for more a mission centered focus.
Thanks for the view ‘n’ review!
A mess hall with some exterior windows would be more engaging and probably a better location for storytelling.
I’m looking to upgrade my computer and software in the coming months to create better models and videos.
Thanks again!
@@AJFisherDesign It's a wonderful ship!!!
Have to admit that this makes about 10,000% more sense than the Grissom class.
Thank you for the view and comment!
Oh, those poor Grissom/Oberth class starships lol!
I tried to find inspiration from what I imagine an early science vessel might look like based on scaling down a Constitution configuration.
I’ve shared an updated animation recently that includes some sound effects, title cards, space background and a narration:

AJ what software are you using to build the modek shown ,, is this auto CAD, or something like blender
Hi HSFB it’s SketchUp. I’m hoping to learn Blender soon. I want to be able to use light sources, shadows and such to create more photorealistic models.
Thanks!
What is the ship's role in the fleet. Based on the deturium tank it appears to be a patrol boat for intra system policing and inspectis as it could not operate indeoendantly for extended periods.
Thank you for the view and question on my work in progress project.
I’m envisioning the Sparrow Class as a short range science vessel. Very mission specific like following up on worthwhile probe readings in nearby systems rather than out in the deep unexplored like a Constitution Class.
I imagine the small scale could make it appropriate for training too. A courier variant seems appropriate maybe. The video description has more.
If you enjoy this video may I suggest you check out the most recent Sparrow Class animation:
czcams.com/video/W5zKmlCsZaI/video.htmlsi=sccoDQoBMzt61bZs
I added a space background and sound effects among other things. Much of the tankage and that sort of equipment is yet to be drawn in.
Thanks again!
Never seen this before. Is it a scout ship?
It’s a starship of my own design. I imagine it’s either a short-range scout or science vessel. It’s still a work-in-progress. My most recent updated animation is below. Thanks!
czcams.com/video/uJo3c-y5G0A/video.html
A small yet very neat ship. All the red polo shirts are doomed, though. Good job!!
Thank you for the thoughtful and humorous feedback.
Word really gets around about those red shirts!
The littler ships are my favourite. If you enjoyed this video, my most recent update from about 10 days ago is linked here:

I’m more or less done with this version of the model. Currently drawing deck plans from which a 2.0 model will be virtually built; primarily for 3D printing.
In time I’d like to export to Blender but need to learn it first!
Thanks again. Consider subscribing for automatic updates on this build.
Must be casual Friday in Star fleet
You are correct! This animation was rendered on a Friday hence the short sleeves on the crew.
But seriously, thank you for the comment. The figures are placeholders for now until the next project when I plan to create custom crew characters.

I dig your design, excellent work!! I applaud you. Does your ship design have any phaser banks or photon torpedoes tubes for defense or some kind of offense capabilities or is shields and a fast warp drive to get out of trouble, the vessel's best defense? Again very cool. Thank you for sharing. Happy Designing. 🖖👽🤓🛸🚀
Thank you for the kind & thoughtful feedback on my Sparrow class starship project!
Yes, the vessel is equipped w 9 phaser banks for defence & offense. As a science vessel primarily, this ship is equipped w a single forward-facing tube launcher for primarily probes and beacons.
In times of conflict I have envisioned a tactical variant of this ship (additional details in the video description) whose forward launcher is retrofitted for torpedoes. Also, the rear-facing airlocks may be converted into a pair of aft launchers.

😁👍
I like the compactness of the design. But where are the crew quarters? I think you might need to add another floor. Also, the nacelles have to be further away from the body to protect against radiation.
Thanks for the view and feedback.
The crew quarters are located on the outer ring of the saucer, with the 4senior officers quarters amidship. The captain has a suite of quarters, ready room and bathroom on deck 1 off the bridge.
Here’s a link to a brief deck plan animation that more easily identifies crew quarters:

I plan to build more “normal” sized starships in the future. I thought it would be a fun challenge to go the opposite direction with my first build as most everyone seems to draw the huge ships these days.
I’ve read about the radiation concerns w nacelles. Some ships don’t follow that guideline of course (DS9 Defiant, steamrunners) but I am still making changes so might “put in” for extensions.
Thanks again for the feedback!
Interesting design. But this ship appears too small to be able to house a standard shuttle. I'd think a ship of this size would need that hangar area as storage space for other equipment, fabrication shops, etc..... Plus this ship looks small enough that it could land on planets.
Greetings! I appreciate you taking the time to comment. Thank you.
My goal with this project is definitely trying to explore the boundaries of designing a compact ship. Regarding the shuttlebsy it’s a compact fit but a class J shuttle should fit based on the dimensions online. There’s a turntable and an in-bay tractor beam to help it “stay in its’ lane” but a shoe-horn might help too lol.
There are a pair of fabrications bays on each side w tool storage (not yet depicted) in wall lockers. I do need to find more cargo storage however.
Someone else mentioned planetfall capability. I’ve never liked the apparent vulnerability of a landed starship but you’re correct the small size could make it possible! Thinking on that subject as it also creates more opportunities for different storylines…
Here’s a link to the most recent animation of the Vortex in case you’re interested:

I’ve moved on from this phase to the next: producing deck plans & a separate, 3D exterior model for sharing. Adding wall thickness and such really helps dial in what works and what doesn’t I find.
Thanks again for the feedback. Please consider subscribing if you’d like to receive updates on the Sparrow Class project.
Not sure where the living quarters are.
Hi! Thanks for asking.
The crew quarters are all along the outer edge of the saucer with the exception being the captains quarters off the “command corridor” off the bridge; opposite situation/ready room. I haven’t drawn them in yet. It’s a work-in-progress.
Lowest ranks share bunk accommodations with more privacy in higher ranks. I’ve got more about crew complement break-down in the video description.
I plan to have some crew quarters built and featured by the next video. Thanks again and consider subscribing for project updates!
Crew quarters?
Hello and thank you for the view and question.
The crew quarters are located primarily around the edge of the saucer section.
The model is a work in progress. If you enjoy this sort of video please check out the most recent Sparrow Class project animation linked below. I’ve added some title cards, sound effects and more!

Nice ship but i didn’t see crew quarters…. Looks like an compliment of about 30-40 crew members
Hi. Thanks for the view and question.
The crew complement is 45. Details are in the video description including a breakdown of junior officers and duty shift requirements.
The crew quarters will be located sound the edge of the saucer.

Thanks again for watching. See you “Out There”!
What kind of ship should this be? Engines, Ops, Living quarters, etc. take all the space.
I do not see any payload that could be usefull. 4 small science labs is probably not enough to rectify such a space ship. Not even as exploration vessel.
At max it could be a command ship or the personal transport of a high ranking officer such as the UFP president.
You should drop the hangar bay and let go of the saucer section. The USS Defiant shows that ships to not need to follow the classical shapes.
Otherwise, nice job. Keep going.
Thanks for the viewing and feedback. It’s a work-in-progress.
I imagine this would be a science vessel for short-term missions. It could also serve as a training vessel or perhaps a diplomat transport as you mentioned.
My goal with this project, as outlined in the video description, is to take the classic Enterprise configuration and “shrink” it down.
Thanks again for the comments. I’ll be uploading new versions over time.
I think they could have saved a little room by excluding the turbo lifts
Thanks for the view and review!
A few other folks have suggested that. They do take up some room but are great storytelling devices. I’ll be installing plenty of Jefferies tubes for alternate access but in my most recent model and animation I eliminated one of the turbo lift shafts. The lifts are good for elderly characters and alter-mode aliens to get around my ship.
Thanks again. If you enjoyed this animation here’s a link to the most recent. See you “Out There”!
czcams.com/video/W5zKmlCsZaI/video.htmlsi=GfOiPvq5WMUg2K1p
@@AJFisherDesign I didn't see a computer core. The one on the E was several decks tall and occupied the center of the saucer from just below the bridge to the lower sensor doom. Your design would require a much smaller version. Perhaps replace one of the turbo lifts with a computer core. I have the TOS blueprints and have had almost 50 year to study them. 😁
@@sjTHEfirst Thank you for your thoughtful feedback. I’m familiar with the computer cores you’re describing. I love all the MSDs that show those cylindrical, multi-level cores. It’s a cool concept to be able to walk into a computer.
I explored many options with my design. I determined that it requires a small core and also I needed deck 2 central for my sickbay. I am imagining something in between TOS era and later core design. The Starfleet tech manual seems to mostly depict “racks” or towers for lack of a better term in an open room.
I’m linking here a deck plan animation I made a while back:
czcams.com/video/KfeE1TIkG-A/video.htmlsi=3gOHAsTjJ3FeJwGm
My port and starboard cores are narrow, curved rooms aft of the bridge; accessible via the command corridor, turbo lifts or crawl spaces I imagine exist under the engineering and communications bridge consoles; sorta like when Spock would stick his head into that vent under his science station.
Hopefully the deck plans explain better. There’s been many compromises building a “tiny” ship but I feel it’s valuable before I go on to a larger vessel next time.
Thanks again for your feedback. If you enjoy this sort of content please subscribe.

like a larger archer class
Yes there is definitely an inspiration there. The port & starboard hatches on the saucer section especially. A similar time frame too if my understanding is correct. I’d love to see more smaller ships from TOS era.
