I think the horror for me is how people can commit evil acts and think they are doing good. Also what is scary is how isolated people can build up a warped morality. There is a similar theme of this in the book Lord of the flies. I also think “folk horror” is really scary as it could happen.
Agreed, love the Lord of the Flies book too.
Couple of notes of trivia. Christopher Lee did this film for free. He new the budget constraints would not allow them to afford his usual fee so he waived it all together. Up until his death he maintained that The Wickerman was one the best movies he ever did, and one of his favourite roles. Also the creepy landlord is played by Lindsay Kemp, a British actor, mime artist, dancer and choreographer, who worked with both Kate Bush and David Bowie (who he is alleged to have had an affair with).
With the Pagan elements of the film, there's obviously the more traditional elements like the Green Man, John Barleycorn, The Salmon of Knowledge (part of the Fenian Cycle in Irish mythology), and the obby oss, as well as references to the Oprhic Egg myth of Ancient Greek Mythology, but the majority is taken from a book called The Golden Bough written by James Frazer. The Golden Bough was published in 1890, which rather brilliantly and somewhat hilariously implies that Lord Summerisle's Grandfather basically turned up on the Island with a bunch of new apple strains and a book on 'how to pagan'. Interestingly enough, although the Golden Bough & similar books written in the 19th century, became hugely influential on the occult and pagan revival of the time (one that would eventually lead to Gerald Gardner's founding of WIcca in the 1940s), Frazer himself was an atheist. The Golden Bough, which has since been fairly soundly debunked in its material, was designed to be a sort of middle finger to arrogant and hypocritical Christians. James Frazer was trying to write a book to point out that, "Hey, you laugh and call other religions silly and strange, but there's been a 'dying and resurrecting god cycle' myth in nearly all comparative religions throughout the ages, so up yours you hypocritical twats'. He also theorised that mankind had evolved, and was supposed to evolve from superstious magic, to religion, to the rational thinking of science.
Nice I might need to check the book out at some point too!
This isn't the only reason why Christopher Lee did this movie for free, it was because he was getting constantly typed cast as playing Dracula and do more interesting roles.
This also proved to be the right decision for him as he has constantly stated that this role was the best role he has ever done.
@@davidhabert and a year later he played Jane's Bond villain Francisco Scaramanga in the Man with the Golden Gun.
James Bond even.
@@scooby1992 That is correct, but don't also forget that Britt Ekland who played Willow also appeared in that James Bond movie as Mary Goodnight.
I have recently went to a special 50th anniversary showing of *The Wicker Man - final cut* at the Picturehouse Central in London and Britt Ekland was there, she even confirmed that she appeared in that James Bond movie with Christopher Lee.
The guy who played the cop in this movie was actually in hot fuzz as one of the cult members
Hahah yeah I learned this after watching, such a cool casting addition and I love Hot Fuzz.
Production and Filming Locations
The production was based at Newton Stewart, on the River Cree, north of Wigtown Bay in southwest.
The opening aerial scenes were filmed en route to the Isle of Skye
Where Sgt Howie's plane touches down at Plockton (at the mouth of Loch Carron, I believe)
May Morrison's shop was filmed at Kirkcudbright, where the High Street Gallery is found.
The Bakery scene was also filmed at Kirkcudbright, where the Harbour Cottage Gallery is found.
The Green Man pub is a mix of two locations, the interior is the Ellangowan Hotel, St John Street, Creetown, the exterior shots are the Cally Estates office, Gatehouse of Fleet.
The maypole dance, schoolhouse and the old deconsecrated kirk, where Rowan is supposedly buried, are at the village of Anwoth.
The exterior of Lord Summerisles' house is Culzean Castle just southwest of Ayr. The interior was shot at Lord Stair’s Castle, at Castle Kennedy Gardens.
The garden the Lord Summerisle takes Howie through is Logan Botanic Garden.
The cave where Rowan leads Howie to 'escape' is the St Ninian's Cave near the southern tip of Machars Peninsula
The final scene with the Wickerman takes place on the Peninsula, between Luce and Wigtown Bays.
Ah awesome thanks for the info!
How can I copy these filming locations so I have them ?
Is it true up until a few years ago the legs were still there, but got stolen?
@@scouseofhorror104 Yes, unfortunately they were removed by persons unknown back in 2006. Only stumps of the legs now remain.
@@claireeyles7560 That's such a shame. It's genuinely on my bucket list to finally visit all the locations.
This is among my personal favorites. Everything from the creative neo-pagan folk music to the almost documentary-like feel to the wicker man reveal. It's a pretty unique film and it was nearly lost. Supposedly Christopher Lee wasn't paid anything for this role. Also I always feel bad for the naked lady crying at the grave. Everyone is enjoying their cemetery orgy and she's left crying at her lover's grave
Yeah poor lady, left orgyless 🤣
You sir win the internet this week: "I have seen a jar full of foreskins but no good looking tomato"
Hahahah, nice. Glad you enjoyed the reaction my friend!
You missed the part where Howie, upon seeing the wicker man says, " Oh God. Oh Jesus christ !" There's a CZcams video that has it on loop.
I saw it for sure just wasn't in the edited version of my reaction!
Christopher Lee was interviewed about Howie's reaction when he says that after seeing the Wicker Man for the first time . There is genuine fear on Howie's face . He exclaims " Jesus Christ " , but he is a very religious man . He isnt blaspheming . He is calling on divine intervention .
Edward Woodward is in Hot Fuzz to help pay homage to this.
MAN I LOOOOOOVE your reaction to this film! You REALLY reacted the same way I did, and most of my friends did... I have to admit I LOVE this (and I DO find it disturbing - in a good flesh tingly sort of way). The remake is hilarious, but THIS one is considered a classic for a VERY good reason. It's one of those films that really stick with you - some of the scenes will hit you at the weirdest moments. They did it SO well - a lot of films try to pull off the building tension thing, but THIS film actually manages to DO it. Some of the most stunning parts are when they show the Constable seeing the Wicker Man BEFORE the audience does - he truly looks terrified. And the ending, when the Wicker Man collapses and you see the sun he's being sacrificed to.... So glad I found your channel! AND so glad you loved this movie.
Ayy thank you my friend, I'm glad you enjoyed this reaction 🙂
You are so entertaining! Straight away, you twigged many of the clues. I love your cynicism. This is one of my favourite films, but I've never seen it reviewed so entertainingly. Well done and please do more!
Ayy thank you friend glad you enjoyed it 🙂
Awesome reaction, a lot of fun to watch. This is one of my favorite films because of my interest in the themes of occultism, paganism, comparative religion, etc.
This film, to me, is part of the exploitation market. Similar to how Hammer Horror leveraged the moral panics of the Satanic Panic. The director was able to do the same here for the 70s progressive and environmental movements that came out of the hippy culture of the 60s.
Essentially, this is sort of a reflection of how conservative Christians saw the new age and hippy movement. The island is practicing the things they'd be worried about in that era of politics: sex education, a more open and tolerant attitude around sex in general, it even had a dual-gendered representation in the motley gathering pointing toward the lgbt. Of course, the movie portrayed these things through the dark lens of a Christian's perspective.
It's also a great exploration of Christianity instead of paganism in my opinion. None of the actual pagan rites of north/western Europe have survived through history except from the biased perspective of the classical and medieval christian writers who reported on them. So when you observed the conversation between Neil and Lord Summerisle as two cultists arguing, I think that was pretty intentional.
Great points, I can completely see what you're saying about it being more evil looking for the perspective of Christians at the time.
Great reaction but I am surprised despite mentioning Hot Fuzz, you didn't twig not only the similarity of the storyline but that Edward Woodward was also in it.
I know I realised after I reacted, but to be fair Edward Woodward looked very different in Hot Fuzz lol!
Great video! I've never heard of this movie until now, very interesting
Nice, glad I introduced you to it, you should check it out its definatley a unique movie!
This was a brilliant reaction by BA . It is a British cult classic and I need to see the remake with Nicholas Cage now . But this original film from 1973 is very weird and almost more creepy than a classic horror film with monsters . I cant believe it didnt get a higher rating than a PG due to all the nudity . Strange to think that the baby being breastfed in the former church yard is about 50 years old now !
I really liked the musical theatre elements in this movie. It’s definitely disturbing folk horror… but with catchy pagan jigs and dirty drinking songs right up to the Wicker Man’s collapse. That’s unique and I can’t think of another effective, serious, horror musical.
That's true I can't think of one either. A very unique movie.
That scene at the seawall with the animal masked villagers peeking over is so creepy. In a good way. 😂😂😂😂😂
Totally agree, one of the creepiest shots in the whole movie. Simple yet effective horror.
and also the big guy called Oak who was ' riding ' the Hobby Horse when he was playing hide and seek around the town .
I’m not sure if anyone else has mentioned but I guess the little link is Edward Woodward was also in Hot Fuzz as the neighbourhood watch guy 😅
My favorite reaction to this iconic film, well done mate!
Thank you my friend, glad you enjoyed the reaction.
I can't believe they burned The Equalizer 😮👮♂😁
Hahah how dare they
Thank GOD (or Nuada, or Avellunau) that you saw the uncut version. THIS is "The Wicker Man." Accept no substitutes.
Yeah I didn't even know there was a more edited version but I'm pleased I got the full experience!
One of the best IMO.
The accents are a wee bit mad, aren't they? The thing that takes me to the fair is that about 15 years later all the supporting actors turn up in Rab C Nesbitt, as if the whole island was evacuated to Glesca. Well spotted about Hot Fuzz too, it's no coincidence that Edward Woodward is in another movie about a policeman going to a weird rural community.
Hahah no way didn't realise some of them were in rab c! Thanks for checking the reaction bro 🙂
I cracked up when the girl fell out of the closet playing dead when he was searching the houses for Rowan.
Just fucking with the soon to be dead cop 😂

Holy Moses I’m seeing so many ties to A24 Ari Asters “Midsommar”
Nice I'll need to check that one out at some point too.
@@BAReactions thanks for responding!! Man Midsommar , Hereditary and lastly Men (all A24 films are right up your alley (Ex-machina too if i haven’t seen it, another A24 masterpiece. Great channel and thank you from Utah USA for time and efforts, it’s great intelligent and funny content with a great choice of movies!
At some point in history, when medicine started studying anatomy by dissection of human bodies, it was met with as much fear and contempt as your reaction being very triggered to this society doing extremely normal stuff - for eg., free sexuality, studying dead animals, teaching how procreation works through symbology etc. Yet because the bias of christianized worldview (even for an atheist, many of us can't get away from this), your reaction at first was call them psychos and a cult, even though that would be the normal way society could go without the moral bias of monotheism, without necessarily being into any cult (without the snuffing part of course, as the christian bias of the movie intends to link a more open and free moral system of Heathenism with extremely bad stuff, so that christianity can be moraly superior).
I think you've got me completely wrong, I just think all cults are weird. I'm a man of science, so they are just as weird as any other cult to me. It's not a Christian bias I'm judging them from lol.
@@BAReactions I didn't though... I'm reflecting on the weight society has even on scientific or academic fellows as in overracting to otherwise normal or just new and unusual - like in the movie Sleepy Hollow (highly recommended), or your overraction to the animals in a jar for one (bio-shop scene), which is similar to how medieval academics would react to the idea of a dissection -
that is because the religious bias of the movie itself and how it manipulates the public, in the context of exaggerating non-conforming Pagan beliefs or biology discoveries into a "cult" or whatever.
@@gabriellbraga7732 I just don't like to see animals hurt or dead like that, that's more my personality than any sort of bias as religious and non religious people either don't mind seeing that or do. I saw Sleepy Hollow but feel free to recommend others and I'll add them to my watch list!
Good choice to watch this movie first. It's fantastic, and while the Cage version is one of the funniest movies ever made, it's worth going into the original untainted by the absurdity.
Britt Eklund who played the landlord's daughter is Swedish, so she was dubbed over with a Scottish accent.
Ahh that makes sense I knew it looked over dubbed! Thanks for checking out the reaction and yeah this movie is a classic.
It was filmed in South West Scotland near Stranraer and Wigtown in Dumfries and Galloway . You were also right about the film pitting two extremes of Christianity and Paganism against each other . Some great actors and names in the film . Christopher Lee obviously , but also Edward Woodward as Sgt.Howie , Britt Eckland as the Landlord's Daughter and Diane Cilento , the school teacher was at one point married to Sean Connery .
Nice thanks for the info!
They DID !! (36:54)
...in a way. Check out 'Straw Dogs' - another 70s gem (1971).
(It's _not_ really a sequel, but it has the theme of a cult-ish community, coming after the big noise in the village. It really has that similar creepy vibe to 'The Wicker Man' and curiously - now I think about it - a very similar title, so Yes - I'd liken it to a sequel)
Oh no way, I've never seen straw dogs so ill need to check it out.
Never be a king for today.
Great reaction pal very entertaining 👍
Thank you my friend glad you enjoyed!
You had it sussed at 13.08 when you said that Sgt.Howie should try and leave the Island as he was in danger from everyone there .
This is one of the best reactions to this one I have ever seen. No one ever blames the officer for not figuring it out. Not my take, but an interesting opinion...
Thank you my friend, glad you enjoyed my reaction :)
One of my favourites and also one of my favourite soundtracks.
The soundtrack is crazy in this movie, good though!
And now the seventies ‘chase music’. Subscribed.
Hahah thank you and welcome to the channel 🙂
you should checkout Ken russel's The Devils, the B.F.I release is the best cut available
Nice I've added it to my watch list thanks for the recommendation!
The stuff you’re saying at the beginning is funny because at first I was like “really?! Most people don’t seem to have any idea what this movie is like” but it’s true they have an idea of what the newer one is like lol. I was surprised and still never see people talk about the fact that this is basically a *musical,* both funny and strange, the protagonist is a resolutely judgmental Christian, and the inhabitants are all free love paganism and se*uality. All I see is it being called a horror movie. I’m like well. Bit of a stranger ride than that makes it sound!
Hahah yeah no doubt, it's still rooted in horror and thriller etc but the musical side of it was for sure unexpected lol.
Great reaction. You're a good detective. Fantastic movie (the remake is criminally bad). It was shot mostly down in Dumfries and Galloway, my neck of the woods. We're all like that.
By the way if you want a visceral and terrifying British horror movie to watch, "Kill List" is essential. You'll love it.
Ah no way that's my neck of the woods also! Thanks a lot for checking out the reaction and I've added your recommendation to my list of potential future movies!
@@BAReactions it's mostly Kirkcudbright and Gatehouse Of Fleet. Summerisle's Castle is up in Ayrshire though.
Hope you've got a strong stomach for Kill List.
This stone'enge wasn't ordered by Nigel Tuffnel.
🤣
“This is the future liberals want!” I kept thinking about this lmao
Great reaction and commentary! I started watching it a bit ago, lost my place, and now was able to watch it lol. I wonder if this is a different version than the one I saw. I also like mysteries that unfold.
It’s funny that the policeman mentions Christianity and biology in the same breath; maybe he’s thinking of like the Age of Enlightenment? Though they aren’t logically connected at all, and of course a number Christians actively oppose teaching science. But then also ironic that he might actually have a better understanding of nature and crops than the pagans! (1)
This time around I felt… inspired to find a middle ground between these two “extremes.” (Granted, IMO, being an arrogant and pompous a** isn’t as extreme as making horrifying sacrifices.) But one is about embracing, I suppose the officer would think, reason, morals, and restraint. On the other hand, the villagers embrace their more brutal, animalistic, instinctive side. It’s rational in the sense that we are animals. And why should we feel shame about our bodies and s**uality?
But er. We see some of the downsides of both attitudes when applied in real weird ways that are about group solidarity.
Oh and I think you were right about Christopher Lee! I believe he said this was one of his favorite films to do. I did not know about the heavy metal, holy sh*t! He really was a contender for most interesting man in the world. (2)
One more thing: when I was younger, I sang the song the townspeople sing in a chorus. (3)
@@NoelleMar Hahah no way, which song are you referring to? And yeah as an atheist with zero political alignment I'm able to be a fly on the wall to a lot of the issues raised in the film from both sides, it's done very well, especially for the time it was made in.
you did it beautifully, tubbs
BA, I really enjoy your reaction channel (I discovered it because of TLOU reactions you did) and now I'm going thru your past movie reactions. OMG! Your quote that "There's nothing scarier than people doing insane things and in their mind(s) thinking A) it's completely sane and B) completely justified." Welcome to today's USA!!! There was a short lived (one season only) 2016 TV series described as a "political satire science fiction comedy drama" called BRAIN DEAD that was more sane than what we are experiencing now. You might want to give it a look and a comment. Regards.
Thanks for the recommendation my friend ill check it out at some point!
Which cult would win, the Wicker Man cult or the Silver Shamrock Cult from Halloween 3 Season of the Witch?
Damn that's a death match for the ages 🤣
Had you never seen this movie and never knew how it ended OK so I guess this was a really good experience for you because the new movies were taken off of this movie
Yeah I had never seen this movie before!
good reaction btw, with the pagan elements of the films I believe some are based on a mix of old traditions celtic & germanic though some not pagan just old, not much is known about the old celtic pagan religion apart from what was told by the romans and others, most of there history was passed orally by the druids and never written down so died when celtic lands were converted, another example is the actual wicker man itself it was only through the romans we know about it but it could of been made up by them to make the druids and celts look bad, basically early form of propaganda, good reaction again not many eople have reacted to this film
Ahh nice didn't know that about a lot of the celtic religion possibly being Roman propaganda!
My ex said that during the procession Lord Summerisle looked like Cher. 😏
LOLL now that you've mentioned it, that's an eerily accurate comparison!
The imagery watching this again reminds me of A24’s horror “Men” which also takes place out your way. Pagan imagery guess it makes sense?
Nice I've never seen men I'll need to add it to the list.
This is such a great movie. Howie is a typical pious, judgmental Christian, closed minded to the point of bigotry. He is a thoroughly unlikable man. The Summerislanders are not any different, they are just as devoted to their faith as Howie is to his, although their way of life is the polar opposite to his. The way they manipulated him into his end situation, and not only that but all the animals too, is sickening. I think this film portrays the worst aspects of both religions, and religion in general.
I always find it rich when Christians complain about Pagans engaging in ritual animal sacrifice, when their religion used to engage in it themselves, and even to this day, in the other two religions they have to slaughter their animals in a ritualistic way, Kosher and Halal. Complaining about Pagan rituals while they have their own rituals like the communion in Christianity which represents eating and drinking the body and blood of Christ. The absurdity exists throughout all of the religions, yet each one thinks their beliefs are perfectly normal to them. Because just like the Pagans are in this film, Christians are, or at least were back then, also indoctrinated with religion in school. There is no real difference between the monotheistic religions and Paganism.
Agreed, all are just different religious beliefs.
A brilliant film you should also watch is the film Dead Man’s Shoes. The best British film since Train-spotting in my opinion.
Love Dead Man's Shoes, probably my favourite UK movie of all time.
I'm just fine with you being anti-religion..that shit is poison. Goodonya for calling it out!

I added Eraserhead to my list of potential future films, I've also previously reacted to Mulholland Drive on the channel which is a Lynch movie. Thanks as always for checking out the reaction :)
Stanley Kubrick had the cast and crew of The Shining view Eraserhead to get prepared for filming.
The cop was the beetle in the desk.😂😂😂😂😂😂
@@kalishakta Good observation!
Why paganism was largely abandoned and should be rejected to this very day. Say what you want about Christianity, human sacrifice is an evil act. Jesus Christ came and died for our salvation (John 3 : 16-17), so such barbarism depicted in this movie can be banished.
Fun Fact: Sir Christopher Lee said that he considers this to be one of his greatest performances.
Location Location Fact: Filmed in 1972 in Galloway, Scotland. There was some controversy when Galloway was labelled as the "bleakest place on Earth" by Britt Ekland. The producers were forced to apologize to the locals.
Evil Eye Fact: The "evil eye" rowing boat, which takes Sergeant Howie (Edward Woodward) to and from his plane, was not constructed for this movie. It belonged to a resident of Plockton. Upon seeing it, the producers decided it would suit the movie. The boat survived until 2004 when it was destroyed in a storm.
Christianity also has human sacrifice lol. Jesus sacrificed himself.
BA Reactions ...That way, we can be redeemed through faith and not acts. Christianity is about life and love, not death. With Jesus at our side, we don't have to fear death.

yeah mayday is real and pagans celebrate it but there's no sacrifices.
I wonder what they do to celebrate must be a bit boring without the sacrifices 😂
@@BAReactions we have huge bonfires and lots of drinking. The maypole is also a thing, as is ceremonial sword dancing.
Sacrifices, animal and human, do still happen, at pagan ritual ceremonies around the world. Study the Illuminati and know they do it all the time.
@@guymorris6596 I know who the Illuminati are, and have looked into them for over 25 years. It's a cool word conspiracy theorists use. They were people who were not allowed in Freemasonry and thus created their own society back in the day. They formally disbanded many years ago, and while there are still secret societies in the world, they are not under some over seeing Illuminati group. Big businesses and billionaires control the world, and while some may be members of secret societies it is their money that gives them their power, not the societies they're affiliated with (for the most part).
You should check out Midsommar if you haven't seen it already. It's another great horror movie that explores culty stuff and relies on just extremely unnerving atmosphere instead of jump scares.

Could you do Breaking the waves some time? 😪
I've added it to the list for potential future movies, thanks for the recommendation!
Great reaction, thank you so much for going with the original before the bullshit that is 2006 remake. As an atheist myself i was happy to hear you voice what i've always felt about The Wicker Man: It's about two fundamentalist faiths clashing. To Lord Summerisle and Howie, everything is black and white. To us as viewers, The Wicker Man operates in grey zones. Sergeant Howie might be our protagonist, but he's no hero. Despite his good intentions he's an intolerant, smug, confrontational, arrogant, toxic and sexually repressed ball of anger. Apart from the ritualistic murder and the alternative medicine, the islanders seem to be hurting no one. They are friendly and tolerant and have a much healthier view of sexuality than Howie. Calling out their religious practices as weird and creepy is a bit intolerant. Would you say the same about the rituals of native americans, or japanese shinto, for example?
There is a certain glee to see Howie the bigot burn alive. The islanders ARE murderers and cultists, just to get apples. And Howie IS trying to save the life of a girl. Still, you would probably rather hang out with the people of Summerisle than Howie. This is why The Wicker Man is an endlessly fascinating film to me.
Yeah all cult practices are weird as fuck to me wether they have billions of followers or a few hundred lol. The apple sacrifices do seem more chill than the cop in this movie, but they are still putting frogs in people's mouths and burning humans for a good harvest hahah.
Conservative Christians did say the same things about Native Americans and the Japanese and all sorts of people, sometimes violent converting them. I mean i think even in the 1960s, indigenous Canadian children were kidnapped off playgrounds and sent to residential schools!
The end is a bit funny, but I’m alarmed you feel actual glee and not empathy at watching that poor man die so horribly lol. What he did to them wasn’t nearly as bad as what they did to him. And what’s the point in condemning any religion if it’s fine if some faiths promote torture and murder? (I know it’s different depending on the power dynamic. But these people weren’t exactly succumbing to oppression.)
now if he had slept with the barmaid he wouldn't have been sacrificed and they would have sacrificed the girl. P.s Woodward was in hot fuzz
Yeah I learned that after watching I checked out his imdb, great nod to one of its inspirations.
some words are just completely done to death
what do you mean?
The Cage version? Have a heart man. It is terrible. Nick Cage movies are outstanding or, they, to quote Eric Cartman, suck ass.
