"Lucky with traffic" is Alonso being humble, we saw from his onboard that he's awesome at managing traffic - save a bit more fuel or use a bit more depending on which car he's lining up for an overtake... perfectly judged entries and exits... it was sublime to watch.

That's why he almost won the f1 championship with a Ferrari for 2 years against a superior Red Bull car. Why he was in a prime position to win the Indy-500 until his Honda broke. He's a smart racer, always knows where he stands, what he has to do. And knows how to be a team player, as demonstrated in this LeMans win.

Yet his decisions in his career have been terrible. Every move other than when he joined Renault was a good move. Not to mention his awful immaturity in disrespecting Mclarens partner Honda. None of that takes away from his incredible ability on track (which everyone agrees he has) his insults against honda where amazing as the engine they provided for years was absolutely shit (thats me being real) and no driver can predict the future. Mclaren gave honda several chances and all they delivered was an unreliable, slow engine package. I think the large majority of people would of made the switch to renault last season if they where in mclarens situation

I highly doubt that comment was aimed towards taking on the likes of redbull mercedes and Ferrari. He spoken his mind about the honda unit last year and it was all true, the honda package was terrible. Im not saying its as bad now and i believe due to redbull being the partners for next season they will push a whole lot more out of that honda engine but we will have to wait and see. 2:02 Buemi was the overall fastest in the race because the track is clean and there is no traffic at the start so both Toyotas made the fastest laps on lap 4 for the #7 car, and lap 5 for the #8 car, before the track became too dirty and traffic spread enough to catch a lapped car on the wrong spot every lap.

The extra grip is not enough to benefit over the fact that every lap you catch a lapped car and makes you lose time on the braking zone or at the exit of some corners. And because you have to go around lapped cars outside of the optimal racing line, you get into the dirty part of the track every lap. Its not a coincidence Conway was also the fastest with in the first 10 laps of the race. Buemi did the fastest lap on the 5th lap.

That's what made Alonso fight for Championships in Ferrari and thats what made him being fastest through the traffic in Lemans - which is what they are praising in the video- That's the natural talent you need to win in Lemans (and any other race) , it's not a qualifying but a 24h race. There was a championship on offer if he'd stayed at McLaren in 2008. And potentially another one at Ferrari in 2017. He hasn't lucked into having the best car (e.g. Vettel at Red Bull and at Ferrari this year, or Hamilton at Mercedes) granted

Unless you have experienced it first hand It’s hard to understand how the racing drivers world breathes, the written and unwritten rules it is governed by and the ever more stringent borders which apply to them. I’ve been lucky enough to experience this through my father’s work. Over 50 years involved in international motor racing.
Fernando’s talent, racecraft and personality are more from a long gone era than they are from those needed in today’s “supposed” pinnacle of Motorsport . He is his own man, even though he has accepted how everything works he finds himself in a position which makes him a potentially uncomfortable driver for any major team to handle. By saying this I mean he has well earned himself a name, reputation and level of recognition unmatched in today’s F1. It also means he will not get tossed around, forced, induced or put in a situation he does not consider fair, and not speak up or stand his ground. Not fearing to voice his claims even if those are against what is considered to be politically correct or commercially acceptable. Which probably are the main drives of any team in nowadays formula 1.
He is not a sales man nor a walking advertising banner. He is a thoroughbred racing driver who comes from the most humble of origins and who has paved his career with sweat and tears from him and his own family.
I truly believe he is along Hamilton, Raikonen, Schumacher, Senna, Graham Hill or Fangio. One if not The greatest Drivers I will get to see in my lifetime. Particularly because the way the sport is headed these kind of drivers are not likely to shine no more. The circus we see today has lost all the characters which made it Great long ago. Nowadays it’s all about PR, commercial strategies and compliance with awkward regulations it’s no more the combination of ingenious and revolutionary engineering combined with outstanding personalities and talent who dare risk their lives just for the glory and love of the challenge.
He has not lost the love for the sport nonetheless his ability, but the understanding that what is needed today are “pet” drivers who are ready to follow whatever orders they are given. If you couple that with the fact that it’s no longer 50-50 driver and machine as it is more 90 machine 10 driver. It has all slowly bored him.
Enough with the banter but from my humble point of view, kudos to him for remaining in F1 and to McLaren for re-signing him and keeping him on board, even if that means allowing him to experience other disciplines within the sport to keep him motivated. They sure know and value the cost of having the best paid driver on the grid on you side. Be sure if he wasn’t the best he would not be there.

I think that the honda engine has come a long way since last season but still has far to go. Its not the most reliable but that can also be said for the renault engine in the mclaren. My worry is that redbull will not within top 3 next season.

U r right during the night the only things changing are the humidity and track temperature which again as u pointed out are related to the tyre and their performance and since the since the performance of the tyres depends heavily on the temperature maybe alonso's car was set up with different suspension set up or something to get better mechanical grip and furthermore his aero set up might also slightly be different allowing greater aerodynamic grip in the cooler night conditions at least thats what i think they meant when they said Nando's car was set up slightly for the night time conditions

But the truth is that Fernando is one of the best drivers and the reason that he doesn't win often in F1 is that Mclaren just sucks. the fact that he's able to keep up still proves that he can still be fast in a slow car. Put Fernando in a mercedes or ferrari and i guarantee you that he'll get at least podium.

He is THE most experienced driver in the world today. But I do kinda of think the "fix" was in with his team. I don't think there was a ""pass given", but I'm sure he was in the "A" car. So the whole race comes down to just that Toyota team, as Porsche and Audi have both left the sport; after years of domination, they had no challenge left...so Toyota had no real competition. It was a two car race for LP1.

The only changing factor is visibility (which doesnt decrease car's preformance) and temperature which shouldn't change prefomance aince both cars have identical cooling sistems that cannot be changed with setup.
