How to SEPARATE Yourself as a Young Hooper

  • What makes one basketball player stand out more than another? I get asked this question all the time, and today, I have some answers. Of course, these are from my own experiences and what I have noticed over my time playing and watching basketball.
    My goal for this video was to come up with some unique ways of standing out that might not be so obvious to all you hoopers. I’ve decided to change it up and rank these 8 from least to most important in terms of standing out, although they can all be beneficial in their own ways. Check it out!

    the thing that helped me most about this video is "it's just basketball, have some fun." currently am 12 years old 5'10 220 lbs and on a team and I struggle with pressure and knowing how to actually understand things on the court like press and defence or where am supposed to be at times. Since am a bigger person then my age group I fall into the center or power forward category. But I am a lot better at shooting, step backs, ball handling, and just passing. Your videos have helped me a lot and I appreciate you passing on your advice and information you have gained through all your years of your basketball carrer. I'll keep all these methods in mind when my next practice game arrives or even any game in general.

    Awesome... I've been putting my strong guards in the post when I see a mismatch, just for one play. They first looked at me like I was nuts, but they usually score or draw a foul. I call "PA +name" for Post Advantage. I probably stole from another coach but either way, the Guards love to get a post play called for them. They may get to flex as well... I may roll my eyes but I'm getting old and have to let the kids flex a bit.

      This is such a tough situation. I'm sorry you are dealing with this. One thing you can try doing is to ask your teammate to have a conversation about the issue. I know this can be difficult, but in the long run it will help you and you will learn the skill of having tough conversations. Just tell them where you are coming from, that it is affecting you, and you are trying your best to help the team. Again, I know that conversation might be tough, but you will be better for it in the long run!

      I don't have much of an answer to be honest, this is a hard thing to deal with. I will say, there are ways to get the ball in your hands that don't have to do with your teammates. You could get a rebound and dribble it up the floor. You could get a steal and go score on the fast break, or fly in for an offensive rebound and get a bucket. Sometimes you have to create your own opportunities.

    Is it better to have good form but less range, or bad form but more range?

    I'm am aged 13.

    • @TuckerRichardson
      @TuckerRichardson  Před 4 měsíci +1

      I'm not sure what you mean by bad form. If your shot is going in consistently, then that is a good thing. Especially if you can make shots from 3. For instance, I barely shoot any mid range shots, but take a ton of 3s. So each player is going to be different, but I personally value 3 point shooting the most.

    • @TuckerRichardson
      @TuckerRichardson  Před 4 měsíci

      Such an interesting question. I think the game continues to develop in new ways, almost every couple of years it seems like now. One thing I can predict almost for sure is that positionless basketball is going to continue to become more and more common. Most players are going to need skills like shooting, dribbling and passing to succeed. But in 30 years?? I have no idea haha. What do you think?

    • @811see
      @811see Před 4 měsíci +1

      @@TuckerRichardson I think that it will become more pointless in the next 10 years but over the long run things like hand checking might return; a big complaint fans have is that defense is too soft. So in 20 years it could go back to having roles. In 30 years we might get expansion of NBA into Mexico or Europe perhaps.
      Mid-majors might die due to NIL and transfer portal. Top programs of smaller conferences like Drake, Vermont, Dayton, VCU; Gonzaga Saint Mary's might leave their conferences for money. Clubs may become big in the US and it could dethrone the monopoly college has on amateur to NBA pipeline. But yeah centers having to shoot threes will exist forever because it opens up your playbook exponentially.

    • @TuckerRichardson
      @TuckerRichardson  Před 4 měsíci

      Those are actually some really interesting ones. I'm worried about how NIL is going to affect college basketball but I do think it might settle down a little bit so that kids aren't flying from program to program quite as much as they are now. And yeah expansion of the NBA seems inevitable. @@811see
