Having a "LiveCD" bootable system like Puppy or Mint Linux can be a great way to avoid the need to do the full install if you have a bad virus.
Often a virus lives in some directory somewhere and has a second thing in some other directory somewhere else. A booted LiveCD can let you go remove files etc without the virus being able to prevent you.
A useful trick is to use the googles to find the name of the beast and then with the LiveCD, go in and find it. In extreme cases just removing what you find doesn't fix it because of the other copy somewhere else. For this, you delete the file and then make a folder with that same name. The virus writers often don't expect that.
You can then go a reboot the Windows to finish fixing it.
Those LiveCD things can also be great for doing backups. Sometimes trying to back things up can be like trying to change tires while the car is driving down the road.

  • @Noone-of-your-Business

3:33 - As seen from the dictionary entry displayed, the pronunciation is "pana-CEE-ah", stressed on the third syllable, not the second one.

actually, cars do have a sort of safe mode. it's called limp mode, where by performance is dramatically decreased and you get like 1 gear. however the analogy you've made also exists in the car world, that would be called "engine running load shed" if your alternator fails (on Fords idk about everyone else) it shuts off all non-essential loads to make sure you can make it to a repair facility or at least extend the drive.

There is an interesting detail in safe mode. In the service tab in msconfig, you will see that many Microsoft program are stopped. So, logically, if we disable the stopped one and boot up normally, the computer is in a better clean boot, if you also disable startup program in task manager.
There is another type of boot that hardware related. In safe mode, some hardware stopped working. So, by disable every hardware that stopped working in safe mode, you can isolate an hardware problem.
Of course, it is best to do this offline as you disable Defender.

How about a vid in regards to those programs(Bitdefender, macro is etc...) that allow to use & run programs in a "safe" environment to see if like but doesn't actually install, & can undo it? That would be cool to compare & see if they actually work....as never have used one myself.

@ma kra "Mainframe" is a word I've not heard in a long time 😉
Let's say "server", since Unix has no concept of a centralized "main-frame".
The context and purpose of a system ultimately determines what platform OS is "better".
Sadly many popular (i.e. Windows!) program equivalents are not available in Linux and running e.g. Wine makes Win application sluggish.
Bottom line: it's all relative to how you use it. But Linux is commonly less applicable in most circumstances.

Even though linux doesn't have the support of mainstream software developers, I still prefer to not reboot 37 times when I am updating. Windows install and all required software= 2-3 days, Linux install and all required software= 27 minutes

    • @PHAD-tc2ic
      @PHAD-tc2ic Před 5 lety

@ma kra Ok, yes. However the most safe platform/environment is not always about vulnerabilities and viruses. Yes, on Linux there will be less of that, because hackers target Win more than Ux. Still OpenSource is more likely to have more bugs or backdoors, thus less safe.
Ultimately "safety" lies more in the thought through strategic human approach rather than ready-made platform solutions.

When I was in high-school I was forced to use my PC in Safe Mode (with Networking) for half a year because my GPU died of amateur overclocking and parents said I have to save for a new one myself. Only VGA Driver was able to "work" with the half-dead GPU. Also, for weeks I didn't realize how to start up sound drivers so I was left without music for a while.

Safe mode is a diagnostic mode of a computer operating system (OS). It can also refer to a mode of operation by application software. Safe mode is intended to help fix most, if not all problems within an operating system. It is also widely used for removing rogue security software.

back in school as part of our education we had to install a bunch of viruses and malware and then clean the infected device.
we needed to enter safe mode, then install both malwarebytes and avast.
the install of both security software had to be installed from a clean source and not already existing on the system when it was infected.
malwarebytes had to scan and disinfect the device over and over until we got "3 goose eggs", aka when we get 0 threats found 3 times.
