    • @Mike504
      @Mike504 Před 6 lety +157

      Bob Saget her hard drive did physically fail. She was literally in every day for 2 weeks. After interviewing her husband she would hold the power button every time when stepped away from the pc and had been since she bought it. I tried explaining how this is bad and the consequences. I told her to just let it go to sleep. I even set it up if she single pressed the power button it would shut off. When it finally failed she yelled at me and blamed me. So sure call me a douchbag.

      Johnjs You buy a new Computer every second year?
      Let's drop the rich/poor argument for a second, I would like to know why you do this.
      What do you need 4 Computers for?

    • @oukn6293
      @oukn6293 Před 6 lety +5

      JustusLM it's a bit complex but k let's see. One is a desk computer for normal basic use, one is for gaming or video editing power if I needed, two are for ultra portable touch screen design work or art of some kind. It sounds weird but I like having them for different uses.
      They range from i3 to i7.

    • @justuslm
      @justuslm Před 6 lety +10

      Johnjs OK, I get your point now, but here's an idea that might actually be useful (you can consider it if you want):
      It seems to me like two computers would be fully sufficient: One with the power for gaming and editing, this one will also be used for standard tasks, essentially being the main system. You could upgrade this system when needed, this is far more cost efficient than buying new systems. _Also, having one computer that is your "baby" really is a great feeling._
      The other one would be a portable device, maybe even a laptop or "ultrabook". This one would most likely stay relevant in terms of hardware for a while since art or design work aren't that demanding.
      Back to the original point: You would only ever end up using both at once when you come home from somewhere, and did something on the portable system that needs to be copied to the main system.
      Other than that, you are always only using one.

      @silvanverhoeven Před 6 lety +9

      developandplay Right, because it's Microsoft's fault that your WiFi dropped xD
      Okay, MAYBE there is a solution to check Download Speed to a certain degree while updating the system, so in case of a lost connection Windows just moves the update, but I am pretty sure it would have been implemented already if it were that easy

    • @developandplay
      @developandplay Před 6 lety +66

      Maybe you can tell how difficult it is to handle that as an OS when updating the OS. If you know for sure that it can be done easily, I am sorry for discussing this, if you don't, that might be the reason why Microsoft never implemented it

    • @howtobeanoob278
      @howtobeanoob278 Před 6 lety +18

      At least on Android, the whole system update file is downloaded before starting the update... Not sure if it's the same way on Windows and you hard reset it before the update itself had actually started (as it couldn't start because the file wasn't downloaded yet)... But I do agree, they should redirect you to an error message, into a shutdown and rescheduled update.

    • @Gesteppie
      @Gesteppie Před 6 lety +10

      It was before windows 8. Windows 7 still offers the ability to download the update, but not install it so it can do it when you shutdown. Windows 8 was the version where Microsoft thought "everyone must be connected to the internet, lets have them all download and install at the same time!"
      One of the few reasons why I HAVE NOT updated to 10.

  • @ph11p3540
    @ph11p3540 Před 3 lety +1

    There are some programs when they crash they still want to run and then they lock up the entire operating system beyond it. In that case a control alt delete or windows shutdown will not work. Super rare but when such an event happens you are forced to abruptly pull the plug. like putting a patient into a coma. Fortunately windows 10 saves a lot of save points during it's update to prevent registry issues. Only thing you have to do is reupdate your os and that is a very minor thing.

It's not too bad so long as you fix the bugs in whatever software you install quickly, and keep a nice backup of your configuration files. If you can do that the worst part of installing is waiting for packages to compile (my current install would take about a day, but that's an edge case)

      Sometimes there is the option to only shutdown. I have the Fall Creators Update ready to install and I could only shutdown if I wanted to. You can also configure the usage times of your PC, during which your computer will not automatically reboot, but will instead wait until the schedule is over and then it will check if you're actually still using the computer or you can schedule the update.
      In general, you shouldn't postpone updates for too long or your computer might reboot by itself. Find a moment when you can afford to not use the computer and let it reboot. Do note that updates are your computer's first line of defence against malware and hackers.

You may just have such a beast of a machine that you don't notice, but you'll see performance degradation across the board using bringing it into and out of a hibernation state presumably everyday and only rebooting every few months. Side note: Windows 10 is MUCH better than Win 7 at hibernation, so it's not nearly as noticeable if you're running Win10...Win7 though good God it was awful about that.

      UPS or surge protector don't protect from a direct, or close, lightning strike. That will fry everything plugged into outlets in your building or house and have seen it happen around 10 times to businesses or people I know. In Texas during lightning storms I completely unplug the two surge protectors that are powering my 4K screen, computer, PS4 Pro, and Xbox One x.

    What happens in the process, if the computer works with battery. What if the device battery is going bad and phone/laptop shuts down multiple times every week without warning? What if computer is in some sort of sleep state before this happens? Can you break a phone by having a bad battery in for years?

    A little tip. Forced shutdown is much safer if there is no drive activity. If you see the drive light blinking actively, it's not frozen, it's doing stuff.
