Best Catfish Rig -- Santee Cooper Catfishing Rig -- How To Tie

  • This is how to tie the santee cooper rig. This is the best catfishing rig for many people.
    The santee cooper catfishing rig using a circle hook, peg float, and a heavy weight so suspend chunk bait and fresh fish off the bottom, making it easier for a big catfish to inhale.
    This is the best catfishing rig because it uses the best bait for big catfish, suspends the catfish bait off the bottom for easy feeding, and uses a circle hook which naturally sets the hook into the fishes lips most of the time.

    The stopper needs to go towards the weight not towards the hook as some have suggested, if you're only using one. If it goes towards the hook and the weight end is left open water will cause the float to act erratic. You've done this correctly despite some of the comments below.

    If u want the circle hook to do as it was designed to do, a snell knot is the way to go to get the line to pull on the eye of the hook properly, not a palomar knot.

    • @FishingExplained
      @FishingExplained  Před 6 lety +3

      You are correct. I have yet to gain full confidence in my ability to consistently to a good snell. The palomar is strong and reliable, but does not compliment the mechanics of the circle hook functioning.

    I just snelled 30 #. Push line thru eye. Bring it up to make a loop at bottom. Use a straw and pen hull to warp line around hook 5x and run line thru loop and thru 5 wraps. Get it wet. Put line thru eye and pull both line and loop end and snug it. It's alittle awkward at first but just makes best snell ever.

  • @fuzzyiguana
    @fuzzyiguana Před 7 lety +6

    Good video, sir. Just an FYI - you can get away with a lighter line/smaller diameter by using your drag correctly on your reel. This may help with detecting lighter bites from channel cats (if you fish for them). The current world record is a 140+ pound fish caught using 30 pound mono. I believe it was a blue catfish. Anyways, thanks for the video and the instruction!

    • @FishingExplained
      @FishingExplained  Před 7 lety +1

      I normally use 30 pound mono for the leader only, then 12-20 pound mono for the main line. No missed bites here :) The thicker leader helps with abrasion resistance while the lighter mainline casts well.

    @danielbrothers1284 Před 4 lety

    you and Dieter Melhorne need to realize that the cork is strong enough to pull line up through the sliding sinker.... which causes the bait to ride higher in the water.... try it in a pool... you'll see it rise up way higher than the length of the leader. If you drift, then it will work okay...but not as a bottom rig. This will work as a bottom rig....BUT.... the line has to be prevented from sliding through the weight..... so keep your line tight without any slack... because slack line allows the float to move upward.

    • @FishingExplained
      @FishingExplained  Před 4 lety

      The floats are not that buoyant honestly for how heavy the bait is. As long as you fish a tight line, excessive bait flotation is a non-issue.

    Fishing explained. Thanks for the vid. I’m going to try it. That said, 1) Its my opinion that a size 7 hook for a 4 lb fish is absolutely excessive, unless you’re using a 2lb fish as bait. I’m guessing your response is you don’t know if your gonna catch the 20 lb’’r or the 4lb’r... for that see comment two... 2) It is general consensus in fishing community that hook size should 100% be based on size of bait, NOT size of fish you are trying to catch. I can attest consensus is valid based on many years of salt and freshwater fishing. Do you see the hooks used to catch 1000 lb tuna? Make sure when you make statements like hooks should be based on size of fish up are catching, add the disclaimer that it’s only your opinion. I do think a stronger hook is important though, with catfish.

    • @FishingExplained
      @FishingExplained  Před 6 lety +1

      The entire video is my opinion, no need for a disclaimer. I am simply giving a starting point as a 7/0 will effectively catch channel catfish from 2-20+ pounds. I am assuming the general consensus of "chunk bait" is a cut piece of full grown forage species in which case a 7/0 hook is an effective hook size. The rig can easily be adjusted to user's liking/preferences/fishing situation.

    • @Anthony-nv7gd
      @Anthony-nv7gd Před 6 lety

      Fishing Explained I hear ya and again appreciate the time and effort u put into the video... was really just the hook should match the fish u are trying to catch comment... obv smaller hooks do less damage on fish (albeit not a whole lot less) so that’s really where I was coming from. Again, thanks bud!

      You need to size the float properly for the size of bait you are using. Experiment by placing your rig in the water and observing before casting.

      Yea it takes a few different size floats to figure it out cuz it most definitely does not always keep it off the bottom.

    Can this rig with flat sinker be used for drift fishing or would a stick sinker be better

    Hey, great simple video. It served it’s purpose buddy! One question tho..i see you’re using both mono mainline and leader. Isn’t flouro mainline and mono leader the way to go, other than oc using what you already which ‘will’ work ..? Thx..what area you fish btw? 👍

      Flouro's biggest advantage is that it is "invisible" underwater. It makes a greater difference with certain species, but I am not sure that catfish are very line shy to begin with.

      Right now i’ve got 65# braid on. About to slap on some 17# fluoro shock leader...and swivel that to 20” of 30# mono for leader. I feel this will help my presentation, along with the right bait. Should be interesting and i hope it works..this will be my first time fishing in a few years.
      **How many feet of shock leader would you recommend??

    Would this rig be suitable for smaller cats like Channels and Bullheads? I noticed the area where I fish where the kittens would bite light and won't take off with the bait like carp.

    The guy at turners recommended a bait holder hook for the small catfish at my local pond, but on a Santes cooper rig is it still as effective as a circle hook?

    Me personally I’d prefer the snell knot.
