Foreign policy has made its way in the Indian Parliament elections like never before. In building brand Modi, foreign policy is central. From the Katchatheevu controversy to BJP advertisements claiming PM Modi stopped the Russia-Ukraine war to even the BJP manifesto promising to make Lor Ram a central figure in diplomatic relations. Senior journalist Mita Sharma speaks to TNM’s Pooja Prasanna on how Modi is perceived globally by world leaders, how much of it is perception and what is the reality and what pushing of Hindutva in foreign policy could result in.

Idea is India is a strong economy which is evident from the fact that it survived major economic blunder like Demonitisation and faulty implementation of GST. Remittances are increasing given the stature of Rupees at an all time low. G7 countries are struggling with High inflation, low production and exports hemce naturally everybody outside India views India as a strong economy and Modi makes full use of it, conducting rampant world tour and meeting with Indian diaspora. More of a well coordinated PR work. Nothing more

Yes ayega modi hi but on religious sentiments only by befooling poor masses who contribute above eighty percent of total population of our country and are easy prey of sparking religious sentiments to get favour for regaining power taking undue advantage of their innocency. Nothing for such class of people who are above 80 crores living below poverty line and fed up upon 15kgs monthly ration by govt, nothing for crores of unemployed youth and nothing for steep rise in prices of essential commodities. Only beating drums of development day and night treating others anti national whosoever speaks truth, besides dividing people on religious lines only in quite disregard of secular and democratic ethos enshrined in our cconstitution. ?😅

Feel India’s weight on the world stage has always been a combination of its democratic strength, a moral compass that often, though not always, stands up for the underprivileged and a progressive outlook. These are all soft power strengths but have been fairly effective in managing India’s interests. To this was added hard power as India consolidated and grew post independence. Whether it was the hundreds of princely states or Puducherry and Goa later on or Sikkim in 1974. India’s space and nuclear programmes and a well trained professional army that has stood the test of numerous wars and conflicts added to the country’s stature and power. Of these the war of 1971 for Bangladesh independence of course stands out. India’s growth since the 1990s has added another dimension to its hard power arsenal, and that is becoming an important economic entity. Even though the country’s decadal economic growth under the BJP government slowed down to 5.9%, India has become a major market for other countries. As far as leaders go, Mahatma Gandhi still seems to outweigh any other leader in terms of global influence and provider of inspiration.

Army is like nails and teeth, no one cares about your teeth and nails if you are not healthy which is economy and India's economic resurgence is what has shifted the world perspective towards it, nothing else, otherwise it would have still remained as a pariah state which it was till 1990 similar to how North Korea is even now, so is the reason world till 1990 did not receive Indian armed forces successes positively and tried downplaying it, as Pakistan used to be the most open state in South Asia till 1980 after wiich religion took it down to drain.

The same set of diplomats were there before Narendra Modi too. Why weren't we had same success in foreign affairs. The attitude of the leader changes the attitude of diplomats too. Coming to Jaishankar, he was a diplomat, but it was the BJP govt which promoted him as foreign Minister after his retirement. It was not a political move, it was a move where he felt Jaishankar will have more value as foreign minister. With respect to foriegn policy I will agree that everything was not successful under Modi. But it has been better than earlier govt

@@mayamenon1616 There is no clear pitcher on whether China has really occupied the lands of India. As per India china didn't occupy land and china is also not telling that they have occupied lands. So it's very difficult to say what is current situation, but it true that China has build lots of infrastructure in the area which is called a buffer area where both of the country shouldn't build there camps. I feel India should focus on building infrastructure across the china border. Till 2019 India was slow in building infrastructure across the border but after 2019 this has increased.
