  • After three months of traveling all over Portugal with my family, we learned a thing or two (or six) about renting cars. I hope you find this video helpful. If you have any questions, please leave us a comment below. We will respond promptly.
Also, please remember that we are not professionals. You need to read and understand your own contacts.

We always take a 5-10 minute video of the car w/ audio + photos of specific damaged areas we've spotted before we drive the car--this helps when you bring it back & the rental company rep tries to bilk $$ from you--this happened to us in Tallin, Estonia when the rep said we nicked a small dime sized area & they held our €900 deposit--luckily American Express refunded the money because the rental company couldn't priduce any photos before the supposed tiny damage! We book the car thru Amex & they instruct you to decline Collision Damage Waiver, plus they have a certificate letter for each country you rent from to show the rental agent🤠We always drive overseas w/ an IDL (intl drivers license) but have never once been asked to show it to anyone🤨

Nice generalities but what were specifics, which rental car company did you use, which cars did you like, how would you rate your experience with the company you chose?

Manual cars gonna disappear pretty soon as EV are replacing petrol and diesel cars.
Regarding the child seats, rental companies charge a lot!
Something that you haven't mentioned is to rent a car onlineong time in advance. As small cars (cheap) may not be availables otherwise. But to be honest, I believe, they charge extra as they know some won't have the choice.

We’ll be in Porto for a couple days before going to Lisbon. We wanted to rent a car to drive to the Douro Valley one day and drive down to Lisbon the next day. What would you recommend we do? This is all very new to us and I know parking can be a hassle that we’re trying to avoid.

If our US credit card includes coverage for rental cars, should we say no to their insurance then? Or is there not an option to do that if it's part of the reservation..?

Definitely read the rental agency's contact and don't make your decision based on my advice. But here's what I found:
When we rented from Sixt, they included coverage for our car and any car we might crash into. We couldn't ask to exclude coverage. When the rental company asked if we wanted coverage, they were asking if we wanted coverage to cover our deductible (which they referred to as "liability"). If you say no to their coverage, you may be subject to paying up to a set limit for damage to the rental company's car. Many credit card companies will cover that for you.

Did you drive on any toll roads? If so, how did you pay for the tolls?

Yes, when the agency gets the bill, they'll charge your card on file. It can be a few days or weeks after you return the car.
