John McEnroe made me fall in love with tennis. Players like him only come across once in a century.

Ditto. Best player ever imo. In his prime Larry bird of tennis.

Plax Yes! He had such a rough, course attitude but played tennis so gracefully. I think it was that contrast that made him so interesting to watch.

i took a tennis class in college in the 80's because of Johnny Mac and most of the guys would add "Roe" to the end of our last names and pretend we were good and trashtalking....JohnsonRoe, ManlyRoe, HansenRoe, etc.

The man is a national treasure and we need to recognise him for this at some point. I was a teen during the 1980's and McEnroe and Borg were both amazing. I was a huge fan of Johns and he never let me down except for the 84 French that he had won and then it got away from him. I know he would like to have that one to do over. Such a Mozart like talent. I am an eternal fan.

Mac knew how to act and wanted to act right, he just couldn't do it when the pressure was at it's hottest. His honesty made his flaws tolerable. His impish smile told you he had done the math before and knew you would love him before you did. I wonder if he appreciates how much his game did for him. Even now nobody looks as good hitting a tennis ball.

he's my age, i didn't follow tennis in the 70's and played a little in the 80's, but i remember seeing him on the news and Sports Illustrated. he was fun to watch, even with the blowups. after watching Mister Deeds, he'd be my No. 1 Celebrity choice to hang out and have a few beers with.

    - John Mac taught me how to play tennis off the TV. He was the master of every shot. He could return a serve from an AR 15. His drop shot landed like a lead balloon, hit the ground and didn't bounce. You stare in disbelief. Also, while winning, or not, at Wimbledon or elsewhere, he also won at doubles and mixed doubles while also winning the tournament, or not. No other superstar player did that. Also, he single-handedly brought the Davis Cup out of obscurity and kicked some major ass doing it and for no money. As far as attitude goes, I love that mofo. I don't know if he was the Muhammad Ali of tennis or if Muhammad Ali was the John Mac of boxing. Yeah, Johnny bitched about bad calls against him but he bitched just as loud about bad calls against his opponent and would obviously blow the next point to make it right, maybe not in a match point in a major tournament, but who would? Love and respect, old bean.

J Mc Enroe impressed his opponents so much with his mastery and total control of the ball , a true tennis magician who only loses when the ball rebels against him, on the court you could only see and hear him ,he was so focused on the ball that he rarely looked at us ,or looked at his opponent till the end of the match ..

My all time favorite. He was an intelligent, witty smartass. I usually despise boisterous folks but something about his personality allowed me to give him a pass. He actually made me chuckle, not cringe, at many exchanges. A true legendary player.

I like him very much always did but when he played he was such a jerk I’ll admit that but the stiffs at the All England club would blast his behavior but they didn’t mind taking the money he brought in putting asses in the seats.

As a HS kid in CT I pumped gas for McEnroe in 1981, not long after he beat Borg at Wimbledon and before the USO. This was a Route 7 Shell station and I was one of the last pump jockeys in America. A young guy with a baseball cap pulled a bit low drove up in a Mercedes 450 SL with a girl in the passenger seat. Only rich people drove Mercedes back then but that’s another story. As a player and fan of tennis I recognized McEnroe immediately when I went to his open window to take his gas order. I didn’t say anything then but told the garage boys when I went inside to imprint Mac’s Amex card in carbon copy, then take it back out for him to sign. The grease monkeys all just shrugged. But yep, John P McEnroe right there on the Amex card. Not that I needed confirmation but always nice. I went back to his open window, he signed, I gave him his copy, and then I said “congratulations on winning Wimbledon”. He said, “thanks” and drove off. In those two brief interactions at the pump he spoke quietly and as I recall didn’t make direct eye contact. A nod of the head though. Not rude, almost shy is how he seemed. Since he’s not known to be shy in any facet of his life I’m now sure it was more about not opening the door to another fan looking to blab his ear off. I wouldn’t have but he didn’t know that. I was surprised at the contrast in personality displayed at the pump vs what I’d seen on the court. I must have done a good job with the windshield squeegee or I may have seen the more familiar side of Mac.

My college roommate in Hofstra in 1984 was the number #1 tennis player on Long Island. He played in multiple tennis clubs on the Island and one day he bumped into McEnroe. They played and my roommate gave him a run for his money. That said, John beat him and was the best player in the planet back then. He broke Borg and made him retire. He then retired at his peak and came back and the game had changed. He was amazing and made tennis interesting for the rest of us. I still miss him.

Mary Carillo is absolutely right! In my opinion. John McEnroe dazzles and plays SO intelligently and with such fierce passion that he can get away with those "trangresions". Still, I love his WORK ETHIC AND COMPETITIVE PASSION!! In interviews, I JUST ADORE THAT HE IS 100% GENUINE & CANDID!! AWESOME TENNIS SPORTSCASTER. DURING HIS ACTIVE TOURING DAYS, HE WAS GOING TO WIN!!!!!!!!!AT ALL COSTS!!!!!!!

No one has ever played tennis like McEnroe. No one serves, volleys, or hits an approach shot like him. After the 1984 season, everyone was called him the greatest tennis player of all-time. Technology, not fitness, ended his dominance.
Small-headed wooden rackets (finesse) were replaced with large-headed graphite/kevlar rackets (power). A 19 year old Pete Sampras just blew McEnroe off the court at the 1990 US Open semi-finals to usher in the 90s era of power tennis.

  • @pamrogers5979

Isn't the question really whether his calls were just.
If you work hard for your points and a match is riding on the line calls (either literally or wear and tear or unnecessary effort because you actually won the point) to question a bad call is correct even if unpopular - and now there are digital replays so if McEnroe was playing today you wouldn't see these altercations?
He was young and felt the injustice keenly - and the gap between amateur line calls and his professionalism as a player. Today's replays show if a ball is in or out so his arguments wouldn't arise today imo
Kinesiology for balance, and flexibility and equilibrium, maximum play, stress management too

He only won 7 slams.Sorry but this is American self promotion, and a real example of crushing insularity. In the modern tennis world John Mcenroe has been surpassed by Federer,Nadal and Djokovic. As for talent, is any player more talented or graceful than Roger Federer.

    • @jamesodonnell9769
      @jamesodonnell9769 Před 10 měsíci +1

ESPN Sportscentury was a series from the late 1990s. Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic had not yet won a slam at the time this documentary was aired. At the time, he was quite close in career accomplishments to all but probably Borg and Sampras. (Laver is considered to be better by most, but many of his slams were prior to the open era so it's not comparable.)

Loved this as one of your biggest fans and Melbourne born ballerina who played competitive tennis 🎾 and perhaps even threw racquet at partner ( really wealthy now ) my dad took a photo. Me coming off Court in country tournament , runner up and my face showed my bad sportsmanship !
I got you ! I still have your back and how outstanding this documentation of your teenage years , NY I know a little . But it is a city for self obsession . You made the world of 🌎tennis more exciting And yes , you could charm us or startle all in one game but the presenters who spoke of your leadership skills in Davis Cup …..that spoke volumes about the love you had for the game of tennis and it was YOU I thought I could get help when Novak treated like a criminal in my city this year , it was abhorrent ABUSE but why did AO not have integrity to block the gleeful MEDIA all over players , interviewing then airing ‘ and what is YOUR opinion ?’ zBravo Nick Kyrgios to speak up , but since when is that ethical in any sport of 🌎elite and a GRAND SLAM
Why did Jim Courier not stop access to players as media were obsessed and poor number 1, defending champ had the entire country against him except for me ! I think they owe apology . 🥎AUSTRAlIA . My government ! You know that is not ethical and that’s why I always was your fan .
I loved this . You were one of the best and set a standard , in your shots , in your passion ! Accolades
