This is a Vintage powerboat toy made in France around 1950 by the french company JEP ( Le Jouet De Paris).
This little boat was very desired for kids back then.
It was in very bad shape, pretty much rusted, the propeller was completely seized. I spent a few hours trying to unlock it...

Great job! I like that although you always totally strip off the old finish, these toys still have their "old" classic look when you've finished them. I guess getting the paint colours & logos correct is important. That boat motor makes a cool noise too!

That old paint is probably lead based too. Not exactly child safe on a child’s toy.
Oh and the old clockwork motors were pretty quiet. Only way you knew when it had run down was when the nose of the boat dipped slightly as it lost propulsion.
The one bad design was that you had to hold the propeller while winding it up… and those metal propellers got up to speed FAST. I cut the palm of my hand when trying to wind it up as high as possible. Was like shoving your hand into a mincer. That was the comet boat I’m talking about… this one was similar though and the identical yellow colour… so maybe same maker?

I am 75 years old. When my family would go on vacation in the 1950s to Ocean City, Maryland, USA, I would buy one of these to take home and play with in our bathtub. They were sold in shops along the boardwalk. I cannot remember the name of the manufacturer, but I believe they were made in Japan. Thanks for the memories.

All of these old toys were designed, and constructed without computer aided design. This is a work of a true artisan. Kudos for bringing it back to life again.

A lost art, but you have revived it . It is too bad that toys aren't made this way any more, kids today are really missing what fun these toys were, no plastic ,just craftsmanship, that gave not just hours of play but years. Thankyou.

Great work restoring. Love it bringing back the past. The only 2 changes i would have made is the propeller and key would be brass or gold color.

That was great. I had a bunch of those boats as a kid spending summers at Greenwood Lake. All my little boats ended up rusting away from neglect. Underwater photography was excellent!

OMFG I had one of these as a kid (yeah...I'm kinda old) and loved it. Mine was red and cream colored. Would take it to Ramsgate (Sydney Australia, not England) baths where they had these big, larger than olympic sized SALTWATER pools, and let it run. Happy days. I love seeing these old toys being revived.

I had a Comet when I was a kid in the 60’s. I used to use it in the town park’s paddling pool. God knows what it would be worth now.

Last night, I watch some guy on another channel restore the exact kind of boat. His restoration is so amateurish compared to yours. He repaired ZERO warps, imperfections, etc.
As an aside, "somebody" is going to be more than aggravated when they go to play Solitaire, finding cards are missing because "a certain party" used them to scrape off paint. LOL!!!

This little boat brings back memories of a trip the family took to W Virginia in the mid 50"s. I had developed an abscessed tooth that needed to come out and the dentist couldn't use Novocain. You can imagine how I reacted to that. The dentist refused to accept payment telling my dad to buy a toy for me so he got me one of these. I soon forgot the pain. It's a memory I'm reluctant to remember.
This came out great. Love the paint job too. You do some cool stuff. I would have loved this as a kid and would have played with it for hours. So darn cool.
