I'm a professional cake decorator and that's a pretty good price for a pan because regular pans I use are expensive! Chocolate cake tends to be more dense. Just some helpful tips: If you cut the dome off of the cake, then the cutter would go through all the way and yes, cutting them level is part of making a checkerboard cake! Yes, you put a thin layer of icing on all of the layers!

Christy B girl! Mine has started doing that, too. Especially after I’ve told him that Vivian tried it and it was a disaster. He was SO confused at first, like, who is Vivian and how do you know what she tried? 😂 He now knows her voice and knows when I’m watching before he ever even sees it.

The MFP does it again showing off her baking skills. For the price they charge, it should have been 2 cake pans with the extras at $9.99. No one bakes one round cake at a time when wanting multiple layers. Thanks Vivian.
Right! I don't know of any Baker that bakes one cake at a time unless it's a sheet cake.
You can bake the cake in any (9"??) cake pan and just use the cutter when cooled. That way you can bake several layers at a time.

Years ago at my job, we all decided to bring a homemade item.
The next day the table was full of things people made.
I watched 2 guys pick up a cookie that a girl had made.
They spit them out. The one asked me if I made those?? He said good because it tastes really bad!!
I picked up & can honestly say I had never tasted anything that bad before.
Cheryl who made the cookies said that she was so glad that her cookies were a hit. Especially after she had to change an item out.
I asked what item. That cream of tartar stuff. She forgot it but substituted TARTAR SAUCE for the cream of tartar!!
I don't know why but this made me think if that!!

Each cake should had been leveled and cut across the middle to have two thin cakes of one so when you stack, you can get more design without getting all that height.
And frosting on each layer to keep it together

My mom had the checkerboard insert back in the 80s (she, too, was extra 🥰). She set the insert in the cake pan and poured alternating batter flavors in each ring then removed the insert quickly. She did that in 3 pans, baked them all and stacked them. It worked great and she didn’t have to worry about pieces breaking.
Love your videos Vivian, you always make me laugh 😂😂😂😂. I've been a cake decorator for 12 years, and if you only knew the silly things that happen in the bakery lol. Always chill your cakes for 30min to an hour, and they won't be so crumbly, they cut cleaner, and your frosting will go on without breaking the cake. Love you Vivian!!!💕💗💖💝

I just spent 30 minutes watching you make cakes and the fact that I wanted you to frost in between layers and level them was driving me crazy but I stuck around for the ending

On a cooking show, I saw a meatloaf "cake" frosted with mashed potatoes. It really looked like a cake.
I like this idea better than putting it on the top of the meatloaf. Put a ketchup drizzle around the edge. A party in my mouth. LOL

Frosting between the layers acts as the glue to keep the cake together when cutting.

Okay first off. Love your show! Second, cakes are usually placed upside down after your first layer. After the second cake, the next is flipped back as it came out the pan. The last layer is placed upside down again. This is for your cake will be more evenly to ice and cut. Hope this makes sense. Love!

Next time freeze the cakes so they don't fall apart. And, yes, you need some icing to hold the cake layers together. I have a custom cake and cookie business.

Michele it’s from the copper top pan line so they all are non stick. She also says it in the beginning when she’s taking the cake pan out of the box.
She never confirmed if she needed to spray the pans..
If they had stuck- the cakes would show signs of damage and she would have showed us the missing crusts

You reminded so much of my sister in this video. She drives me insane in the kitchen and you made the kitchen rage come back. Every time you were about to cut into a cake I'd start yelling " it's gonna fall!!!". 🤦🏽♀️🤣🤣🤣
When I was a kid, my dad used to bring home a checker board cake from a local bakery. They put a thin layer of fudge in between the layers with chocolate frosting with a maraschino cherry on top. It remains my favorite cake to this day. The bakery is long gone, but I may give this pan a try to try and replicate it!
I remember making "meatzza pie" in high school home economics class, it was meatloaf mix pressed into a pie pan, for a filling you used marinara sauce, mushrooms, and cheese. This was back in the early 60s, so I guess "weird" is timeless.

It definitely needed frosting on each layer and in between layers. If you would have cut the rounded top off of each cake and made it level, that little tool would have worked perfectly

Hey from Cali, Vivian! When you're making a double-layer cake if you put the flat sides of your cake together it'll be straight and won't fall over. No need to cut/level it. And yep, if you want to cut your cake, place it in the freezer first. That keeps it from breaking to pieces. Luv ur channel. I'm PROUD to be one of Vivian's Vitches!!

I made my BFF checkerboard cake in 1986 for his 16th Birthday 🎂!!!! He loved it! It only took over 30 years to come up with these pans.

I've been making 3 layered checkered cakes for yearssss! Got my first kit out of a catalog when I was a teen. My kit has 3 cake pans though.
Lol, I think I used that circle thing a ma bobber wrong! I poured different batters in each of the spaces and then carefully removed it, it worked though!
That's how I would have used it, before ever messing with cutting it, then pieces don't just fall apart when you cut and plate it.

Richard Ortiz yes it’s plastic. You put it in your greased cake pan and then pour your different batters in each compartment . Then carefully lift it ( the plastic thing) straight up. The batters stay in place! Then you bake it
My granny made checker board cakes all the time and she used her rings with the batter. Pour alternating colors, pull straight up, bake, and stack. They were perfect everytime.

Yasssss Vivian you was on the right track when you leveled off the top of the cake that’s what you’re supposed to do to all if them so they sit flat on one another. Also you do a crumb coat of frosting with it just a small covering of frosting to stop the crumbs and to set the cakes outside. Then you let that cool in the fridge and then you finally frost it and make it look pretty,

You need a little icing between layers so that when cut it, it stays together.
Don't know if this has been said already but when I saw the pocket piece I immediately thought of making 2 "pocket" cakes but flipping the top one upside down to put filling in the pocket! You would have more filling and it would be in the middle of each slice!!!! Think some sort of cream filling in the piece being flipped and maybe fruit or something softer like that for the bottom cake!! 😍 I need this pan now!!!! Thanks Vivian!!! You da real MVP 😎

I’m pretty sure each cake was supposed to be cut in half, horizontally, and then the cutter would be plenty deep enough to cut through. Also, I believe once cut, they’re cooled, and then dirty iced, cooled, and then assembled ❤️But now you’ve got me wanting to go make a 4 layer cake AND I DoNt EvEn LiKe CaKe 😂
Hey Vivian love your show, I don’t know if someone else told you this but, when I was a nanny my boss had a similar checkerboard cake making kit . The way I did it was I placed the ring in the pan and poured the cake mix alternating the mixes with the rings. And then I carefully too the ring out and baked it. That way was a lot easier then the way u did it. Thank you for your humor!
