  • Leor Sapir is a fellow at the Manhattan Institute (MI). In his work at the MI, Dr. Sapir applies his research and academic experience to policy matters, concentrating on issues of gender identity and transgenderism. His inaugural essay in City Journal (Winter 2022) explores a series of recent court rulings on transgenderism, demonstrating how bad ideas translate from fringe academic theory into law and policy. Previous pieces for City Journal explored evolving athletic guidelines and media coverage surrounding transgender issues.

    Thinking about whether we might also get somewhere with an ad absurdum approach: e.g., anti-woke students "identifying as" dogs, cats, or airplanes, demanding to be housed in kennels or hangars and to be called "whosa good boy" and "vrooom", etc. The civil rights establishment would either recognize it as satire, and be enraged (but effectively lampooned) or....they'd embrace it and life would get even crazier.

    12:39 - in other words, politicians caved in to the trans lobby activists, and took the easy way out, instead of actually creating guide lines based on some sort of actual regulation such as say 'third spaces' for trans people (such as bathrooms, locker rooms, prison or sports leagues) and/or some sort of gate keeping as to who can pass in a convincing and believable way, no, they preferred writing vague legislation full of loopholes where they simply washed there hands. And they did so while simultaneously virtue signal to their woke base, and letting the door open to all kinds of absurd opportunists who could exploit this issue, while also throwing women under the bus in the process.

      The gate keeping needs to be based on biological facts, and there should be zero consideration given to whether a female impersonator passes or not. Zero consideration should also be given to how much effort has been given. None of this matters. A person born with a penis can NEVER be or become a woman under ANY CIRCUMSTANCES WHATSOFUCKINGEVER, and NO person born with a penis should EVER be referred to as she or her, or EVER be allowed into female only spaces or sports, under ANY circumstances whatsoever. NO EXCEPTIONS. To allow ANY of this evil insanity to occur, is to disregard the rights and needs of women and girls, and is incredibly misogynistic and harmful and hateful toward women and girls. It almost seems that women and girls don't matter at all to these people. It is like they are flipping us the bird...AT BEST. It is obvious that these people in support of these policies DETEST ALL females and children.

    How did the gender ideology movement advance so fast? By standing on the shoulders of all the other movements you cited. And by using the intimidation tactics of our time; fear of being canceled and ostracized, fear of being considered backward, fear of being branded a bigot, and fear of being accused of discrimination and sued.

  • @jboushka

    The basic problem is having a legal definition of "gender identity" when it is so subjective (as with self-id, even by a minor). The "performativities" of Judith Butler more or less correspond to gender identities as claimed. but so do the "polarities" of Paul Rosenfels (from the Ninth Street Center in NYC in the 1970s), who intended this concept to be used by individuals for personal growth only, not for (publicly) classifying and "labeling" (or "pronouning") people for political rights. Rosenfels is less well known (than Butler)but his ideas have essentially been codified as "gender identity" which is not what he wanted.

      I can't work out any application where gender identity needs legislation and we want to make any tangible effect.
      I can think of a thousand ways sex needs protecting in law. In tons of countries we apparently never bothered to put in the basic effort to clearly define terms and prevent loopholes.
      The best I can come up with for gender identity is that you can change your name and title on government documents. But that's basically pandering. Otherwise I can't think of any practical applications or needs for gender identity protection. Everything else I run up against the issue that you're requiring ppl to treat some different based on gender identity. That's basically legalizing and enforcing sexism.
      There was a time when I thought maybe we'd be able to make some concessions for a tiny group of gender dysphoric post-op trans ppl but I don't actually see any evidence to say they shouldn't be treated like anyone else according to their sex legally.

    The issue with the takeaways at the end is that regardless of getting these changes, even if that were possible, the people who are in power, examples like school administrators and teachers, will fight against this and continue along the path that meets their beliefs no matter what the law states as we've already seen with things like Affirmative Action where the administrators and teachers found and announced workarounds.

    • @azilgaard
      @azilgaard Před 3 měsíci +1

      Sapir is not putting all European countries into one box disregarding all of their differences. He’s putting them in one box with regard to one factor only: Healthcare is paid for by the taxpayers and hence everybody is covered. You don’t need health insurance, calling an ambulance won’t cost the individual in need a single dime - it’s totally free. The same goes for seeing your general practitioner, a specialist in e.g. skin diseases or psychiatry and going to the hospital. You may have to spend two days or two weeks in hospital but you’ll never see a bill. However, in order to justify this freedom all kinds of treatment *must* be evidence based. In the US treatment is based on your wealth and whatever you feel you have a right to get - including scam treatments that are harmless and unnecessary at best and harmful at worst.
