    And let me add - this is one of those advice videos that I wish I heard 20 years ago. I bet most of the people listening have no idea how rare and valuable what you're sharing is - I personally never got this advice, had to learn it the hard way sadly.

      Wow Adam. You are in every corner where art and emotions meet pal. (In a good sense I meant) Love your content! Because of people like Tyler, Trent, You, Feng Zhu and many more, I understand how to approach and what to do in every situation nearly. The only thing is landing my first decently paying gig. Then the rest of the strategy is not a mystery for me anymore because of your insights about the industry. A huge thanks to you all for being out there.

    I once read "if you are not being rejected every day, you are not trying enough". That was a cool way to put me into perspective and calm down on the stress of nailing it right away.

    Ahh man too bad you're not going! I live RIGHT next to the convention center, would've been nice to catch up after all these years!
    SOMETHING I WANT TO ADD: If you're new to going to a thing like Lightbox, be careful about comparing yourself to what you'll be seeing there --- if you're not used to seeing a lot of other pro-level artists in one place it can be easy to feel like you don't measure up, and you might leave feeling sad/anxious because you'll think you'll never get to their level. That comparing isn't healthy, know that art and professional art have a wide range of appeal and everyone has their own strengths to bring to the table, just as every artist has their weaknesses too! So instead, look to be inspired to try some new things (say to yourself "I'd love to try this / do this" and not "I can't do this / I'll never be this,", and make some friends to meet again next year!
    Also if you're really shy, try to find a friend, (even if you coordinate with someone from twitter or something) ahead of time to go around the convention with you, because having a wingman can help a LOT to overcome social anxieties when you talk to people in groups AS groups.

      exactly what happened to me when I went to GDC. Felt sad and incompetent.

    • @devilichus
      @devilichus Před 6 měsíci

      @@nacostaart Get inspired and reverse engineer what you see It is truly inspiring when you think that way. Also before GDC, even ArtStation overwhelms a person in the beginning but when you try to work-out what techniques professionals use and utilize that type of workflows to your craft things starts to get way more fun. Also like Feynman technique I always return back to fundamentals whenever I feel incompetent and find out new things this creates amazing results and fast growth I can say.

    I know it's been some time since you uploaded this video, but I just wanted to say THANK YOU, as someone with social anxiety, it's a hard thing to deal with, and it's not only being shy, it's harder than that, It requires a lot of effort, energy, and determination to overcome, anyway, thanks for sharing this, I'm sure it will help a lot of artists

    I went the the last GDC and once I got there I felt like a complete fool. I went there to try and make connections and maybe find a job but I just realized how unready I was. Just felt like a total idiot and what was supposed to be a 2 day trip to San Fransisco was like 5 hours. Complete waste of time and money. The months leading up to the event I was stressing out hard and trying to build a portfolio. I think if I were to go now I wouldn't have put so much pressure on myself and just tried to talk to people casually. Also to get a hotel instead of a nasty hostel.
