The Tragedy of Gen 3 Beedrill.

- Pokemon Competitive Singles in Gen 3 has a long history. Gen 3 has many examples of random, subpar seeming Mons carving out some sort of niche for themselves in OU. A lower power level and reasonable top threats can create a lot of metagame diversity.
But unfortunately, the iconic bug type Beedrill has very little to offer in Gen 3. It not only has absolute 0 use in OU, even in the lower tiers it struggles quite a lot compared to its fellow Early game Bugs.
Thankyou to DawtoVA for requesting this and for the generous donation.

Some will never figure out how to get Beedrill in Pokemon Scarlet and Beedrill Violet. But famous player Jim Cool is well aware of the Best Beedrill Moveset in Competitive, and even how to Beedrill Shiny Farm. Many aren't and never will be. That's just the unfortunate reality of the world.
The below text is very relevant to many people.
Game Freak just blew all other online game development schools out of the water with this incredible new 2022 release. You're gonna need to get a game design degree online, and FAST, if you want to make a better game than this. Not even the best strategy games android reddit could hold a candle to this breathtaking Next generation competitive Pokemon experience.
Scream Tail is the Jigglypuff of our wildest dreams. It has been buffed with some higher statistics and the incredible ability, Protosynthesis. Gen 9 Competitive Pokemon wouldn't be the same without this powerful pink blob. He kinda looks like someone I met in one of my game design and development courses.
Gen 9 Pokemon Showdown is one of the greatest online gaming sites in history. From Pikachu and Charizard, to Palafin and Roaring Moon, The new Pokemon games, Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, have introduced a lot of new faces. Can I succeed in one of the best android games of all time? If so, I'm gonna get myself a Walmart bakery Pokemon cake to celebrate.
Gholdengo is a Pokemon made of pure gold. He must have done some online business management courses to accumulate all that wealth. Or perhaps he might want to learn how to make money playing video games on CZcams. In any case, he's a powerful metagame force, with absolutely no interest in online game development schools.

Jim was traumatised so much by the request to use Beedrill on his stream that he had to make this video.
I love how this is just a rant
It's just a rant, and Beedrill really didn't find it's OU set 😂
"Such metagame titans, as lilleep and castform"
This is my favorite line of the year thus far, true or not
it is true in that teir.
I've got a Monograss LC run planned for Unbound Insane, Lileep is likely going to be a game changer
I’ve been wiped by lilleep in a zu game, when band aipom literally plows through half the game something like lilleep is necessary
Something like a bug type explosion for Beedrill would have been cool based off the idea that a bee can only sting once and then dies when it loses its stinger.
I love how the examples of gens where Beedrill improved still feature clips of Beedrill dying
Beedrill has a simple design but doesn't have a simple time in any metagame
Ain't that the truth.

I don’t think I’ve heard you chastise a Pokémon nearly as much as you did to Beedrill in this video. You really went in on it.😂😂😂
The boy Iron Jugulis
iron jugulis unfortunately exists.
As far as early game bugs go I always liked Vivillon, fen 6 felt like a generation where they decided to actually make the route 1 mons useful. Talonflame was a beast obviously, Diggersby was crazy strong, and Vivillon had access to 99% accurate sleep powder, quiver dance, and 97% accurate Hurricane. Wasn't overly strong but it at least could do something unique!
Someone’s never faced the butterfly effect in ag, wasn’t too good in Gen 6 since darkrai was forcing so much sleep prep but in Gen 7-8 sub QD hurricane sleep power viv is a monster in the right matchups lol
Vivillion's signature move powder is underated. Cancels fire types attacks and the user loses 25% of health.
instead of buffing Beedrill itself, i would buff its signature move Twineedle by making it a priority move, whit that Beedrill could make use of Swarm a lot better and be a decent revenge killer.
Finally. I am caught up on the lore of The Tragedy of Gen 3 Beedrill.
Gen 3 in game Beedrill ain't completely awful, but competitive isn't in game sadly.
It's not a story the Professors would tell you.
if beedrill and twin needle were released now instead of gen 1 it would be 50 damage per hit with a 50% chance to poison and keep the gen 2 ability to poison steel types it once had.
If they can buff Leech Life they should buff Twineedle. Definitely should give it the ability to poison Steel types back, it was probably an oversight in Gen 2 but gives it some unique utility.
“Ledian but worse, and that’s as bad as you can get” YOU LEAVE LEDIAN ALONE 😭
Vanilla Beedrill is the quite literal equivelent of bringing a bee agaisnt a 10 meter tall snake that can shoot lazer beams and you expect it to win agaisnt it somehow.
You know things are bad when ur best stab is hidden power lol
Meanwhile Salamance using hp fly as stab being a top tier mon xD
It's poor on the design front because it fails to incorporate the utility of bug moves as an offensive venture. Back when we were idiot kids, normal moves against rocks was a bad time
Back then a lot of things didn't work, not even rock. And you only had a handful of special moves that could. If only you had a fast, power packed nuke the likes of mega Beedrill to pop off a twinneedle or two, which not only hits twice for a potential crit, but also poisons? Bypassing rock AND ground's resistance to poison
Not even Scyther learns a bug move until gen 2, which if I'm not mistaken is exclusively fury cutter. It's just not good for the brand
I'm not saying give Beedrill poison touch (although it's sort of a freebie) but bug types have a whole typing only to be complete fodder. How many Poison bugs out there going toe to toe with Kadabra?
Jim if you ever need to talk to someone please talk, I understand the toll that using Beedrill in any metagame can put on a person. It is insane.
Guys you dont understand. It's a "Bee" with a "Drill"
And you call it a bee, despite the fact that it is obviously a wasp.

I really love beedrill, and mega beedrill is one of the reasons i will always support megas. They made it actually decent to use with the stat boost and adaptability. I wish they could have made a regional form of beedrill based on mega beedrill so i could actually use him in later gens.
Mega Beedrill was a glass cannon. And if you set up swords dance, it becomes a glass howitzer.
Butterfree:
-Very accurate sleep and paralysis moves, ground immunity
Ledian:
-Decently fast, good Special Defense, elemental punches for coverage
Ariados:
-Sleep immunity, can trap pass like Umbreon
Beautifly:
-It's a mixed attacker I guess?
Masquerain:
-Intimidate and has unique coverage with Hydro Pump and Ice Beam
For hitting with STAB Sludge Bomb, Weepinbell is also ZU
Elemental Punches ain't doin much from its pathetic attacking stats. Ledian mostly has support, screens, and baton pass
Elemental punches have a chance to status the enemy so their is a small amount of utility there.
"Beautifly: Mixed attacker I guess?"
That's great! Only problem, Masquerain is also a mixed attacker (Beautifly is just outclassed by Masq)
@@electricipea.101 masquerain should've been bug/water

Jim, I’ve been getting positively shocking mileage out of venomoth, running hp bug, sleep powder, sub, screech. I did a team of 6 randomized mons. I thought “clearly venomoth is the worst.” But he ended up cleaning many matches during the late game with some surprising shenanigans. Definitely my favorite early game bug type at the moment.
Would be pretty cool to see Twineedle get a buff to 40bp per hit like dual wingbeat with the poison chance, nice way to upgrade beedrills signature move, or make it like dragon darts with the smart targeting, I think that would make sense on a bee pokemon
I feel like attack order also deserves a buff as one of the few still signature moves.
Make it a buff infestation
there should be a bug move that forces people to switch out like circle throw/dragon tail@@DemiIsNotHere

It really looks like something that can hurt you). I would like it to receive a paradox form or something to compensate the fact that the mega is not in the game anymore.

I used a beedrill in my soulsilver playthrough were i thought it was really cool because of the way it was posed, it looked like a fierce knight stabbing forth its lance ready for battle.
some additional commentary on beedrill in adv zu: there was a recent shift within the past few weeks that added 26 new pokemon to the zu tier from pu, including beedrill itself. the points made in the video are still valid, but dont necessarily reflect the current metagame.
in the weeks of meta development, lileep and castform are no longer the titans they once were, and yet beedrill still struggles. some of the top-tier mons now are quilava and ponyta, which are both faster and threaten beedrill with their fire-type stab, and graveler, which can tank any hit (even at +2 attack with no defensive investment on graveler) and ohko it back with its stab options. koffing is also still good (thanks to graveler) and can handle beedrill easily, especially if you're packing flamethrower or even just will-o-wisp.
for bug-types in the tier, it's outclassed by both anorith, which has the same speed stat but a significantly higher base attack and an actual ability, and ariados, which can hit graveler and koffing super effectively with giga drain and psychic, respectively.
Lileep is still a relatively solid enough comparison coz how it offers the best physical defensively value compared to Graveler, and Castform is effectively Porygon but with no reliable recovery
Beedrill is one of the most iconic and recognizable bug types in the Pokémon franchise.
This is a great example of the elegant simplicity of Pokemon designs from gen 1
At a glance, this Pokémon looks like it'd be pretty strong
I like Vivillon, it's surprisingly not completely god awful, and it's form gimmick is pretty neat, especially back in gen 6
Beedrill
"this might be farfetched but farfetch'd is better" had me chuckling, excellent work! Now I'll cry over how bad they did my boy..
You really knocked it out of the park with this one. I’ve never heard someone so passionately berate Beedrill like you have. A rather entertaining watch, thanks Jimothy
Ariados is one of the more significant pokemon to outclass Beedrill in the unfrozen ADV ZU! I’ll be watching ZU Olympiad II to see if Beedrill can find a place in the tier, or if it’s fated to drop to ADV Subzero Used.
Throwing in some additional information. Farfetch'd in comparison is SU (below ZeroUsed) with pushes to be risen to ZU, and Ledian is also SU but being pushed to drop to Imaginary Used due to the lower tiers BP policy
My favourite Pokemon! He was the first Pokemon I ever got up to Level 100. When Mega Beedrill was released I was so hyped.
Weedle was my first shiny all the way back in Gold. Beedrill was my favorite mon for a little while before I ever looked at a status page or knew people played competitively. Beedrill isn't much, but I'll always remember it fondly.
Meanwhile, Chancellor Iron-Morguilis at Sydney:
Did You Heard the tragedy of Gen 3 Beedril?
Beedrill was still in PU when ZU was on the ladder rotation. Honestly it probably wouldnt be so great considering Dustox, Weezing and Nosepass are top tier walls. Common attackers like Aipom and Castform can just OHKO it. Truly the pokemon of all time
So I have a really cool story about why Beedrill is my favorite bug type. Back when I was a little kid playing Pokémon Silver I was just bored one night and so I was headbutting trees near Violet City to see if anything cool would pop out. While I was doing this out pops a shiny Weedle. This was my first ever shiny and I was so happy it became a permanent staple on my team.
Now we moved around a lot while I was growing up and sadly my copy of Silver was eventually lost. But the craziest part is what happened later on. One night after I had just graduated high school I was just kinda wandering around near Violet City in Soul Silver when guess what pops out of the grass. A shiny Weedle. I just excitedly shouted "He came back!" I still have that Beedrill to this day and when ORAS made a Mega Beedrill I was so excited.
Beedrill may suck but it'll always be a favorite of mine.
What you said about Ledyba had me laughing sooooo hard when I watched this yesterday. I had to stop what I was doing. Loved this video, beautiful look at the calamity that is the bee.
What I would love to see the dissertation Egoraptor would write on this subject given his stance during Game Grump's Pokémon Fire Red let's play.

"It might sound far-fetched of me to say here... but even Farfetch'd" 😂
There's one gen3 metagame where beedrill is functional: gen3 random. In gen3 random, it operates as a salac SD sweeper. The stat scaling benefits it greatly there. Additionally, Beedrill's power really depends on the opposing team. Often, your opponent has no check to SD Beedrill or just one that can be dispatched to enable the sweep. Beedrill operates as a legitimate gen3 random win con, and can't be taken lightly.
when you gotta have 20 more levels than your opponent to be a menace tho
Beautiful! It’s super goated in the early battle factory at the gem 4 battle frontier. Additionally I got a shiny Beautifly on a recent playthrough of Ruby, and i adore getting random shinies.

My favorite early game bug type is the Ledyba line. Ledyba is cute and Ledian looks like a cool kamen rider. Both also outclass Beedrill
Seeing as you asked, Orbeetle is my favourite early game bug. Cool typing that I’d wanted for a long time, also he looks like a Gundam, or an Aura Battler from another old anime series called Aura Battler Dunbine if anyone’s seen that. I’m mildly annoyed that it’s not currently available in gen 9.
Orbeetle also has 505 bst, which is crazy for an early game bug and is the foundation for me wanting all the other early game bugs to eventually get huge, Masquerain level and beyond stat buffs to match.
As someone who repeatedly used Beedrill in my Generation 3 teams, this is painful. Hidden Power Bug is *not* the best Bug type move on Beedrill, it's Twineedle
Beedrill with Twineedle and a Focus Energy popped while holding a Scope Lens means he has 2 basically confirmed crits. That 25 base power may seem piddly but when boosted by Swarm and the power of crits, Beedrill is a surprisingly competent party member. On top of those traits Twineedle has one of the best chances to poison in the game
Ledian is infinitely worse in Gen 3. At least Beedrill has moves it can *use*, Ledian is loaded up with offensive moves it pretty much has to cross fingers with for added effects to proc. It's worth saying something about Ledian when the elemental punches, which all ran off his superior Special stat in Gen 3, are still essentially pool noodling your opponent to death when you try to use them.
I have used Beedrill in approximately 3 more games than I've ever bothered attempting to use Ledian. Even that being said, I didn't have as much trouble using Ledian as people said I would.
Beedrill is ironically a lot like Farfetch'd, the bird you mentioned. Both rely on their Focus Energy and held item to boost their crit rate with Fury Attack and go on bombing runs, but Beedrill has the added benefit of being able to pass this boost to someone else
Wanna give your Rhydon Focus Energy and go on a bombing run with Rock Blast? Ledian can't do that, not even Ninjask can do that, but Beedrill can. He's one of the few guys with Focus Energy *and* Baton Pass.
I really wanted a video focusing on the minute - to minute gameplay of one of my favorite Gen 1 mons but it just feels like you tried to shove a triangle into a circular hole here.
Buzzz bzz buzzzz buuzz bzz bz buuuuzz buzzzzz! - Beedrill, probably.

I love Mega Beedrill. Sure, it's still no top rank pokemon, but it's the Beedrill we always wanted. It could actually lay down the hurt its design promised us.
I would personally give Beedrill +10 Attack like in Gen 6, and buff Twineedle or Pin Missle. I could also see Endure being useful to reliably get down into Swarm range, and maybe have a Salac berry or something.
sobbing and crying rn
Damn, that Beedrill really broke something in Jim.
And there I thought I broke him with Tropius plus Piloswine, but alas, I forgot about the bugs
Omg. Idk why but the pronounciations this video felt really funny to me, especially girafarig and farfetchd.
Great video as always.
Don't say to me that Beedril is worse that powerfull treats like Wooper, Sunflora and Ledian....
Beedrill is the new Iron Jugulis
Dang man your last name is cool! You must be pretty epic
I've always been partial to Butterfree competitively speaking because it's crazy just how useful Compound Eyes is! I wish Beedrill had a surprisingly cool ability like that that sneaks up on you. Its hidden ability is... Sniper... what's it supposed to do with that? oh it gets Laser Focus to turn all of its attacks into two-turn moves, awesome
Honestly, come up with some surprise hit ability (just something on par with Compound Eyes and Swift Swim-- I'm not asking for Prankster or Huge Power tier abilities here!) and maybe turn Twineedle into an actual move and we could have quite a fun one here!
Yeah it deserved a better abillity...
But let's get crazy with huge power it would've been the best user of it with a whoping 568 max att stat vs the "sad" 436 of Azumarill.
And with it's 90 ba he got later it's max att would've been 612, more than it's mega.
tldr. huge power Beedrill is an awsomly scary glass cannon banced by its mooveset
You know it’s wraps when Ledian says you suck
I love masquerain, intimidate + sticky webs + actually good special movepool is great, just wish it was part water type. (ik its not a route 1 bug but still)
Hear me out: a bug type endeavor that can poison
Mega Beedrill had Fell Stinger and it was the most awesome sauce i've come across.
8 minute beedrill roast sesh
Bug types really need a 60bp "venom" move that works like salt cure, except without the bonus vs steel/water. It could be distributed to the many weak spider/bee/centipede pokemon.
Giving Beedrill that, plus technician and revenge, would let it at least threaten walls and run some choice sets.
Beedrill is my favorite underdog Pokemon. I know it will never be good anywhere but I just love the guy.
When next live stream? I miss them. Also is there a better way to get you the donations instead of super chat where evil CZcams gets a massive cut?
I lost my mind when Beedrill's mega evolution got released, which improved the pokémon a ton, and I lost it just as quickly when they scrapped the mega evolution concept again
Thanks for the video, I didn’t think Ledian had a better niche than bedrill to be honest. Maybe I should request Ledian next stream? 💀 Mayhaps see what mental gymnastics I make you try
To make up for it, do a session with mega beedrill in gen 6/7 OU or UU.
Grubbin is my favorite early game bug
Beedrill design wise looks like it can be pinsir/scyther tier of pretty cool pretty ok bug type pokemon. It's not unfortunately. Also really like you pronounced milotic like melodic. Pretty sure the battle revolution announcer says it like that too.
I may be missing something in Gen4 but i feel like the Scolipede line in Gen5 is really where bug types started getting proper respect. I remember the first time i went up against a whirlipede, hit it with a super effective move and it tanked it. I think i sat there going "wait, that's not supposed to happen". Bug Pokemon that are allowed to be more than just early game fodder do quite well and some of the older gen mons deserve love from GF to bring them up to date for good (not just temporary stuff like a Mega)
"such metagame titans as lileep and castform" this sentence is fucking surreal
a signature bug type move that has a chance to paralyze could be cool :)
Beedrill Gaming
Brb I gotta level my weedle
loving beedrill is just a constant lesson in pain ;~;
Venomoth, seaking, and pidgeot
My favorite early-game bug has unironically become Spidops. It USED to be ironic because of the funny memes about it early into Gen 9, but that caused me to look into it more. It has super cool design origins, combining modern stealth equipment, a unique spider family, and even a yokai near seamlessly. It's got a fantastic signature move, being an attack block that drops speed on contact, paired alongside a lot of other great moves that make it lean towards a defensive pivot that can send out hazards and surprising chip damage. It even has great thematic abilities that aid its gameplay further in Insomnia and Stakeout.
The ONLY problem it has, and the crux of its unviability, is its pitifully low early game stat total of 404. If it got 20-30 more points in its Attack and HP, I imagine it could actually be somewhat viable in higher smogon tiers (relatively speaking) and early VGC seasons. As it is though, at least it's a lot of fun on base game replays if you're looking for a good challenge.
Ledian needs an evolution
Will we get a video finishing the Regi Trio and dogs for Gen 3?
I remember old Smogon sets just recommended Choice Band Butterfree and whatnot... Seeing someone talk ill about Beedrill in gen 3 makes me wonder how we got there.
My favorite early bug type is butterfree.
