2005 Ferrari F430 Spider First Drive - Is the Last Manual V8 Ferrari Worth It?
Vložit

- Okay, yes I know that they did a manual in the California, but literally about one person bought it. If you want a manual Ferrari which is remotely affordable, the F430 is the most modern car you can buy. But 15 years after its introduction, does it live up to expectations?

"If you're looking for your first Ferrari."
I'll always be looking for my first Ferrari.
I love window shopping for cars
@@JayEmmOnCars He may have several, but number them in reverse order, so the first will always be the next one. PS who doesn't love window shopping for cars.
Guys, the F430 is the last manual mid-engine Ferrari. The California is the last front V8 Ferrari, the 599 is the last front V12 Ferrari.
The manual F430 is such an astonishing car to drive. Only 5% of the F430 production world-wide was manual.
Much more reliable than the F1 F430, and so much pleasure with that stick and this masterpiece of 4.3L V8 naturally-aspirated.
AMAZING.
gtc4lusso has a v8 option
Not manual though
They made a California manual???
Yep
JayEmm on Cars damn I had no idea, before the turbo too I guess. Time to sell my 1er cab. And a kidney.
Great description: 1 good looking, 2 good sounding - and the rest is bonus - right, that's it!!!
Epic Ferrari...I wish they bring back the manuals :(
So true
Yea but manuals are a dying breed had the chance the drive a 458 and see why they changed to dual clutch but it's not the same as a good manual
Forget manual, naturally aspirated engine is far more important i think
yes, but the market voted with their wallets. iirc the split between f1 and manual f430s was something like 90/10. ferrari will only bring back the manual if there is enough demand.
I just bought an 08 F430 spider. I’ve previously owned a 92 348 and an 01 360 spider. Both with manual transmission. So this 430 I bought is an F1. Initially I thought, oh shit, I screwed up getting an F1, as I do enjoy the manual shift. HOWEVER, I’ve been really getting used to this F1 shifting. You need to practice for awhile, learning when to shift and how to modulate the gas pedal. Im actually really starting to enjoy it a lot. My doubts are gone.
Great vid
As a petrol head the ferraris are above all else for me and to own one is a lifelong ambition
This review captured the romance of the car and your comment about the next vid has left me excited now 😂
Some years ago I had the chance to spend some time behind the wheel of the F430 be it the flappy paddle gearbox but what a machine, it is just brilliant!
One of my favourites ever...great job 👏
Your best video yet for sure. True emotions with nicely put information.
The F430 Scuderia was always my poster car when I was younger... I think they're wonderful. I'd no doubt settle for an F430 Coupe manual though if one of them came into range :-)
What a beast, one of my goals is to own a car with a gated shifter, you just can't beat it in my opinion
That dream Ferrari would be an F355 w/ gated shifter. If I get one, I'll more than likely own it for life.
Still love the variety of cars...and the drive bye bits are cool thanks
Cheers, wanted to do more but just couldn't in traffic
That intro is FIRE!!!
Cheers. I have a new one coming out in October which is pretty nice too
Can't wait to see, great video thanks.
That is one hell of a car! I love the 430 spider!!!
Enjoyed that,thanks 😁
Ever since the F430 launched its been my single dream car! Rosso Corsa with Nero interior.... since the 430 Scuderia 16M Spider launched, I’ve promised myself that one day I WILL own one!
Nice video, and if I wouldn't know you're driving a 430, your description of it could have been about the 360. I have that one in manual and drive it nearly on a daily basis. It has so far not let me down. And it has the 5 valves per cylinder engine, as well as a sound that Ferrari has not matched since (I drive it mostly windows open to enjoy the sound..here in Malaysia that's not an issue, same for the occasional roar I love to make in any tunnel). I'd recommend the 360 manual over a 430 as the electronics in my experience are just less complicated and hence less prone to issues. Maintenance wise both are fairly ok and in range with any 5-series BMW if you ask me. Anyhow, the 430 is a great car, though you can also go for the 360 and get that awesome sound too. I enjoy your videos! Keep it up!
That F430 needs a thorough detail inside and out. Can't imagine how much fun that would be on a Ferrari seeing every inch shine
Sublime review mate.
Thankyou
As always you are brilliant with the video content you are made for this honestly you know what to say you have everything down to a tee you would be good on a tv show look forward to the next video thanks Kev
Next one's a good one. Cheers Kev!
JayEmm on Cars excellent can’t wait thanks have a good day
I own this car I was hesitant about buying it because I really wanted a 360 with that sound but with the capristo exhaust sound it’s fantastic
How is it I think of a car and then a review is on about it? Absolute class car and video!
Just don't look too closely at that lamp in your room
For me 430 coupe with paddles. I want one ever since Best Motoring video with Keiichi Tsuchiya on touge with traction off. Nobody has driven it like that
Love this one I drove at Hampden Downs. Thumbs up.
Always loved the 430, still do.
Would like a Coupe
You get to drive such cool cars.
This was a superb design
Some nice stuff here. Well, you have a new subscriber :)
F430 spider with a manual gear box really has a very sweet spot in mid-engine V8 Ferrari range.
Beautiful car. I would love to own it
Your a lucky boy Jay!
Great review mate. I have the spider and love it! By the way, what microphone were you using here? The one I use seems to not be very good. Thanks
Superb 👍
Its successor may be much faster, but this is plenty fast for me, esp with the Manual. After all, it is more fun to drive a slower car fast than drive a much faster car far slower than its capability. And this car, with the red and cream combi, looks gorgeous.
Remember seeing this car in the Miami Vice remake, looked and sounded cool. I’m working hard if they’re still under £100k in 2 years I’m all in!
Have you managed to get one eventually?
Important to note (not mentioned or featured in the vid, Jay?) is that the shifter box is raised, it's taller, like in the Ferrari of the 60s. Knowing this would be the last V8 mid with a manual 'box, perhaps Ferrari decided to liken the appearance to the cars of old.
The shifting geometry is quite different from the F355. The throw is shorter, the actual mechanical portion being sunken further inside the raised box permits for more noise dampening and better shifting manners. It is kind to the driver who really didn't want selecting a manual transmission to be a mistake.
The clink of the shift in the 360, F355, 348, 328, etc was from a nearer pivot point on the exposed stick. The closer to the open mechanicals, the more pronounced the sound of the movements of the switchgear. The F430 is very well-mannered and probably the best daily driving modern Ferrari. The F430 is an adult.
Great info I did not realise. I will make sure to work it into my next 430 video
The David Brent of the car World. Keep up the good work.
No that's Jamie at FYD. Shout out at anything within Eye shot.
Great show!!!! (The office, that is).
Haha!
I’m not the biggest fan of modern(ish) Ferrari’s but this side of a 355 I could just see myself in a manual 430 GTB👌🏻
Autotrader allows people to put what they want in their ads. Manual F430s usually turn out to be autos once you start looking at the photos. It makes looking for a manual a lot harder.
Beautiful car. I’d love a drive in one of those.
You can hire them for anywhere between an hour and a day in Maranello. Not cheap, (4 figures for the day!) but it’s only money.
The Ferrari F430 is becoming desirable among collectors. Clean, low mileage examples are starting to bring in big money.
I'd take this over a 458 anyday...the last cool Ferrari
Something analogue to drive? have a go of my GT8? I’ve got a 675lt as well if that doesn’t take your fancy 😜
if you want to keep a car that is raw with primodial dram with a dash of modern tech then f430 in manual is probally the last great mechanical ferrari after that car is all dct and turbo nothing wrong with those ferrari but i can tell you rite now a well spec out f430 in manual you wont lose a single dime on that car value.
Any chance of a review of an Alfa gtv v6? the Busso engine is one of the all time affordable
greats.
No GTV but there IS some Busso content coming soon
@@JayEmmOnCars Excellent. It's a pity that engine never went into a truly great car, although the original 166 & gtv are stunning.
@@JayEmmOnCars 156GTA?
Nobody does beautiful like Italy,I don't know how they do it.
Great video Jay, this current serious you have been working on for a while to build up, has really been a leap 10 fold for me, so all credit to you...well done Sir.... this F430 manual is a very interesting spec and what you say about older and newer Ferrari's is so true...anything from about 2005 -2007 got a lot better as indeed did the generation from there. But the truth about Ferrari still holds true "For this much I give you an Engine" the rest is free... however I was astonished to see the new SF90 Stradale seems to have finally come good... For it's price you would really expect it.....finally removed all that cheap Fiat Internal plastics... it will be interesting to note if Ferrari can stay on top of their electronic issues...they were always garage queens... somehow I doubt it given Italian designs full stop. unless they start buying more components in. I personally don't look at a ferrari as a step up from a Porsche... I used to when I was young...
Thanks very much Alan. Hope you enjoy the finale
@@JayEmmOnCars For once you actually have me trying to anticipate it...!! and guess what it is...really looking forward to it...all the work you are doing behind the scenes is really coming together...and I am not even talking about editing.... which is extremely time consuming.
@@Tracertme Tell me about it! I've just been up to Scotland to film a whole bunch more cars (some really cool stuff coming in September), and I worked out in the last week I've driven 21 different cars on camera.
@@JayEmmOnCars Thats a months work of videos, does it mean you get a month off...!! :-) wishful thinking I know.....the risk that comes with driving to many cars is the ability to stay emotionally connected in your video's with the passion for cars that you naturally have.. other well known CZcamsrs are already suffering this fatigue ...I won't mention names... because many fans appear unable to accept different opinions... even his manager came to defend him once online, when I expressed a view and realised the error afterwards.... all he ended up doing was highlight it further.. which get's focus from the manufacturers... I reckon if you can get more hook ups with various garages and special interest groups you will have the material to work with, then you can work more on the script and story lines...building and developing/ refining.. your own IP. But like I said your doing a great job, at least your not a life style CZcamsr...!!! on flash cars..
@@Tracertme No it means I get a month stuck inside a hot study with a roasting computer editing instead!
It just occurred to me, after watching this for the second time in a year, (strangely because I now have time), that you are driving around Lichfield. If you know them, there are some great driving roads around there.
I did not find any good driving roads out there
@@JayEmmOnCars Of course, it depends upon the size of the car, but there's a decent back road cut through from near the Belfry to the back of Sutton Coldfield, another down A444, to Burton, One to Whittington then to outskirts of Tamworth then back to A38. Most are national speed limit. Used to have some great fun in my old 1275 GT, (sadly now deceased). Just tend to potter around in my Ford CC now, which is no sports car and has more dents in it than a CZcamsr's wallet.
Need to watch later if I cannot get to sleep.
So this farrari came out when I was born. 😍
Great review as always. I am actively in the market for the manual f430. You mentioned briefly the historic prices. Could you give your opinion on where you believe the price to be at currently? The prices online vary massively. Keep up the great wrok.
I’m looking at a 430 spider but it has the F1. Took it for a test drive and actually quite liked it. I’ve read that if you want a manual it’s literally almost double the price.
The coupe manual would be my first Ferrari if I ever got the chance to buy one. Have you looked back at this video since buying the 430 Scuderia?
Yea I’d consider having one of these. I don’t care at all about any of the later ones. Way too much tech. This was the last really good Ferrari
This and a 599😍
Wouldn't be a Ferrari without sticky switches!
If you're buying the car to drive it and don't give a toss about winning concours then you're better off replacing them with something more durable
360 coupe manual has a slightly sweater drivetrain and steering feedback
I currently own a 355 manual, have owned a 355 F1 and have driven 360 F1 and 430 F1. Was not impressed with the 360 and 430. The bottom line on these cars is that you better buy the one you love, don’t make any compromise. Maintenance will be expensive, if you love the car you won’t mind. Once I saw 355 and 360 side by side I knew I could spend money in the 355, the 360 I could not. None of these cars has impressive performance. Jayemm has it right, “Does it look good, does it sound good?” For me the 355 wins over 360 and 430 on those criteria.
Jayemm: If you ever come to the U.S. my car will be available for you to drive. 😁 355 Spider with Capristo exhaust, Capristo bypass valve, and high flow cats. It’s like brand new, reliable and sounds amazing! Not one dime is spared in maintenance. 😁 it has similar performance to my ‘15 Carrera 4S and ‘17 Cayman S.
The 355 is a mighty car. I saw the One Take video on it and hearing the V8 scream to 8,5k RPM made my jaw drop. Congratulations on your purchase :)
@@MrSlashStudios thanks. I agree, the OneTake video was very good. JayEmm's videos on it are also. I've never really seen a video on CZcams that captures the sound though. For some reason you never get the really high pitched F1 scream when filming it. The thing that's so different over my other cars is that it sounds amazing even at 3000 rpm, it just keeps getting better and better all the way to 8500. Getting a ride is the only way to truly experience it. Yes, they are expensive to maintain but a new Porsche will cost much more in depreciation and they aren't exactly cheap to maintain either. Maintenance is usually more expensive in the U.S., my cost for a major service is usually $8-12k. I do one every 6 years. For that cost the engine bay is made like new. My second one has been as reliable as a Toyota.
@@RustyDog41 That's a pretty decent maintenance bill for a supercar. It's much more special than a Porsche, too. I hope I can be in one someday. Sounding good at 3000rpm does help with being less obnoxious around the neighbourhood hahaha.
These have always left me cold. I'd still like to drive one but it wouldn't be my choice
As an owner of 2005 Ferrari f430 with F1, I have driven both F1 and manual, now Ferrari spend millions when design it to really work with the F1 transmission, hence why there are few manuals as dealer really advised clients to go with the new technology, only the diehard manual driver or people who were saving some money took the manual. I have to say drove a manual on the track was not impressed the F1 gear were so much better, especially coming into turns and down shifting, it True feels and sounds like a formula 1 car, which is Ferrari is truly try to do. Give their customer the formula one technology and feel in their cars. The F430 does 0-60 3,8 seconds and that was n 2005?
Good work! I love mine which is identical to the one you have here, use it lots cos I can’t resist driving it (been to Italy in it twice) it’s not my first Ferrari but I think it will be my last. I can’t ever imagine selling it. Ps...Sticky switches? Gunk degreaser, Q tips and a lot of patience = Problem solved.
Do you have the F1 trans?
@@johnforeman634 no, mines a manual box. Same as the one featured in the video.
@@simonedwards___ oh man, lucky you. That car is worth big bucks. I’ve got a Rosso Corsa manual 360 spider. Not as valuable as percentage wise they made more 360 manuals. But I’m sure you know all that
@@johnforeman634 That’s a nice car! I had a F1 transmission 360 spider that originally belonged to Eric Clapton which was a beautiful car, but I didn’t enjoy the paddle shift so swapped it for the manual 430. 👍 Have fun in your car this summer 😉
@@simonedwards___ ya you too. Nice chatting with you. Enjoy!
My most favourite you tuber. I need your help? I want to buy either a Manuel 430 spider or scuderia. On balance which should I get? I love a race car feel, but love a manual roof down? Cheers, nick
@JayEmm, as one’s first Ferrari, would you still recommend a 430 with the F1 gearbox?
Would you rather have one of these, or a manual Audi R8 V10 for much less money?
I feel like the Audi is also a bit cheaper to run and maintain, maybe even a better noise as well.
best cabriolet
Nice
Utterly dire aftermarket exhaust on that!
Next maybe a Alfa 147 GTA or SZ? hope so!
Watch this space
I Want, and Need, a 430!!!
Thought roads looked familiar. Thats a few miles from my house.
Looks like the Walsall Road area of Lichfield, Staffs? The roundabout near the end looks like Muckley Corner?
F1 for the month’s finale???
Superb. I do agree that anything older would be financial suicide.
Eh? A 355 is NOT a 348 chassis with an updated engine. I don't get your alternate chassis/engine theory, they did so much to both from the 348 to the 430.
can you drive and report on my favourite Ferrari the 246 Dino, please?
At 3:14 Jayemm delivers a wet fart comment like no other. Bravo 👏 👏 👏
Not an F50 but well sick
So what was that special car ...?
I've been drivi g manual sports cars for over 4 decades...guess what? I live my dct rear mid engine sports car...the dct is so intuitive..so direct in feel...so fast in shifting. I must be the only guy who doesn't lament the loss of the manual in today's supercars.
Makes for a nice narrative but honestly I'm so directly connected with the dct equipped sports car...I'm good to go..
Over 4 decades ..over a half a million miles in manual sports cars..I loved my manual sports cars but experiencing today's dcts? The computers are better.. just playing devil's advocate yet to a large degree it's true.
Next up? No transmission as the ev revolution rewrites what we thought we knew.
8:44 wow.
@ 4:35 .... That wing mirror control was concave... and therefore not the same as the convex one in the Audi RS2, sir. Just because it looks kind of similar doesn’t mean it’s the exact same... and, why would Ferrari be sourcing any of their parts from Audi?
It's a mystery but they did
The Ferrar California was the last manual V8 Ferrari.
Just needs a K&N air filter and a stage 1 remap and it's good to go
🔥🔥 Try and Drive a Ariel Atom 🔥🔥
How about an evo 6
Impressed by a 430 Spider, who would have thought...?😉
Ferrari F430 i Think Been FUTURE Classic Ferrari 250 LM & Ferrari 250 DINO at its Looks
This would be my first Ferrari and Supercar if the prices weren't so crazy. The cheapest manual F430 now is £80k and the next cheapest is £90k, then the next after that is £100k. Pretty crazy.
It's hand built bro it would be expensive
@@akrambaig2689 My comment was 3 years ago....... I checked again and there's only 2 Manual F430's on Autotrader Uk now, cheapest is £100k. My whole point was the difference in price between F1 gearbox and Manual, not about it being hand built
The 430 is my favorite fezza. I hired a Scuderia in Maranello for a day a few years ago. It was epic, truly incredible on the mountain roads 1/2 hour north of the factory. If I get my shit sorted out or when bitcoin finally gets where it’s going a manual F430 in resale red with Tan leather will be my first purchase. Can’t wait to see what you think of the F12.
So? It happened then?
Update?
The last all manual Ferrari is the 550 Maranello!
My first Ferrari was a F430 with a F1 gearbox, then I traded it in for an ultra rare Evora GTE and put some money on top of it. Still not sure, whether it was the right move 🤔
Wtf
Did you own it for a long time? If so, what kind of clutch life did you get. I’m looking into an F1 right now
@jay: what do you think of the Scuderia 16M?
Never driven one so couldn't say!
The last Manuel V8 isn’t the F430. It is in fact, the ultra-rare California. The made less than 10.
How tall is jay?😊
"It sounds a little bit like a wet fart...." LOL.
Last car has to be, with that build up either the MG Maestro turbo or the Rover 420GSi turbo, both very under-rated.
You're actually kinda close
Much more my thing than a Ferrari, hope you're right.
@@JayEmmOnCars XJ220? :-)
