When Suzie and I married, I asked her for the privilege of reading The Chronicles of Narnia to our (ten years in the future as it turned out) children. Our kiddos arrived as triplets - long story of God's incredible blessing on us that we had any kids at all - and when they were old enough (point being, all at the same time), I read them all seven books as our bedtime reading ... for a long time! What an incredible privilege! And it was so wonderful to share these books with the kids, and they loved them. No question when we become grandparents, the time will come when this treat carries on in the next generation.

Practical Christianity, The Sovereignty of God, and Gleanings from The Godhead (I think now called The Attributes of God), all three by Arthur W. Pink, would definitely be in my top 10 of a list of top 100 books.

Thanks for your love for Pilgrim's Progress. My mother read this to me when I was in elementary school and I have loved it ever since. It is one of three books that I try to re-read every year. (The other two are the Bible and Knowing God by J.I. Packer.)
Knowing God by J.I. Packer - YES! Last year I re-read this for the first time in probably 30 years. It was incredible!
I'm really loving the Puritans now, great to see your list, i have most of them, so far in my life my favorite Christian book is Bavinck's Reformed Dogmatics.

"The Pilgrim's Progress in Today's English" is my favorite...really wish publishers would translate all of John Bunyan's works to modern English.
It's a crime against a classic! Okay, but I'm glad it's available to make him more accessible to those who are benefited by it.
@@unexpectedTrajectory Also, "The Pilgrim's Progress" Kingstone comic is great for kids. A modern day retelling that's fun for adults would be "The Postmodern Pilgrim's Progress: An Allegorical Tale."

I loved this video series! Thanks for putting all of this together! This took time, thought and effort. It is appreciated. My only question to you is, "where is love towards Randy Alcorn?" I know that you emphasized authors from the past and works that have and will prove through the test of time. However, you had a few modern authors and their works. . . I think Alcorn deserved some love. What do you think?
I thoroughly enjoyed listening to your list. Regarding Systematic Theologies; as a Baptist my three favorites in order are Robert Reymond's, John Frame's and John Gill's Body of Doctrinal & Practical Divinity. I generally find authors prior to the 18th-century difficult to absorb even if I agree with them once I determine what they are trying to say. I find it much easier to read Hodge than Turretin. I would like to know your thoughts on Robert Reymond. I am also curious of your thoughts on Gordon Clark.
Regarding literature my list would include Jane Eyre, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Bronte and Quo Vadis by Henryk Sienkiewicz, which is the best piece of Christian Literature I have read, far better than the 1951 film. The 2001 Polish film is very faithful to the book.
I first became a Christian in an extremely arminian church that fortunately also greatly encouraged study of scripture. After five years I was in crisis because I could see that the cult of libertarian free will was wrong but was indoctrinated to believe that monergism and the belief in the absolute sovereignty of God was heresy. R.C. Sproul's Willing to Believe changed my life like no other book save the Bible.

Have you ever heard of the Matthew Henry Bible Reading Plan? Someone put together a one year reading plan of Matthew Henry’s Commentaries (the unabridged six volume set) and it’s from Genesis to Revelation (like 15 pages a day to stay on track). My theologian for this year is John Bunyan. Next year, I intend to either read the works of Matthew Henry, or Jonathan Edwards, I haven’t decided yet though.

Do we know if David Brainerd wanted his writings read? I always feel bad about reading any diaries/journals or letters, unless the person states they wanted them public.

@@mj14991 Oh, that is good to know. I always think how I'd feel if people found my journals. Not that there's anything worth reading. And I guess if I'm dead it wouldn't matter to me anyway. But I hope you understand what I mean.

Pastor Matt, how do we know it's (biblically) okay to read/enjoy reading? Not just the Bible, but anything? I always have in my mind, "Get your head out of the clouds and do something useful!" Not that I recall being outright told that, in those words, when growing up. But that message got through. My parents worked so hard, for US, their kids. They didn't have time to read. Now I'm in my 50s and still can't shake this mindset. I have piles of books all over my house. Every time I try to read, the guilt overwhelms me and I don't get far. It's horrible.
Look up *read* in a concordance or your Bible app. Many examples of reading the scriptures, letters, and poetry. Consider the Apostle Paul. He had spent his entire life reading and studying, then God used it mightily. Quite frankly, you seem to not have any conviction of watching videos or writing comments online. It's all about CHOOSING what you put in your heart and mind, without vexing your spirit -
[2 Peter 2:7] And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked:

I would be very interested to hear a discussion between you and Leighton flowers on Calvinism. Most of the prominent Calvinists that I am aware of are pretty cranky. You obviously have a very gracious and even tempered demeanor so I would love to hear you engage with some of the more compelling criticisms of Calvinism in a discussion with Leighton.

How can You say that the Bible is the only infallible book? That kind of thinking implies that you have read all other books written in history and thought them throught, which is impossibile.

Not so. The answer to your question is....Jesus. His life, nature and work attest to the truth of who He is and of what was given to the people Israel before his birth in this world. He is the apex and pinnacle of history and is the lens through which not just the Bible is to be understood, but truth generally. Let's say for the sake of argument that one could do what you described as impossible, ie read all other books. You would still find yourself at that nexus of what do you "do" with the person of Jesus? If He is who He said He is, that is a fundamental realization and indeed transformation, of the "search" you seem to be alluding to. I would suggest starting with Him. Be well.

4. My question was about Bible as the ONLY infallible book. I have problem with THAT because that kind of reasoning stripps you of intellectual integrity by parroting uncritically phrase you picked somewhere, without thinking it throught. I'm sure there are other books which are infallible, like some maths textbooks, probably some logics textbooks and science textbooks.

It's a channel comment section, the likes of which are usually where people ie viewers, interact at length. 3. Cross imagery is not used exclusively, particularly in the times in which we live, to represent biblical Christianity. Further, you asked a question that IS often put forward by non-Christians. 4. The channel is one of Biblical theology, and the top 100 list primarily of theological works; do you really think that Pastor Everhard was talking about math, science or logic textbooks wrt infallibility? It appears that you've taken offence to being challenged by someone who has not...."thought it through". That would not be a condescending assumption, would it?
