My Granddad went through this shit. He was gassed, wounded then bayonetted by a German guard AFTER being captured in 1918. He was just an ordinary working man who went to war for the bosses as the workers always do. War solves nothing but it enriches the rich & the poor die. We need to end war by ending the neoliberal shite that begins it.

I've always liked this film. The budget is obviously an issue, but Daniel Craig, Julian Rhind-Tutt, Cillian Murphy and yes Danny Dyer do extremely well with game yet serious performances. Craig especially holds the entire thing together.

WWI, the war depicted here, was credited with taking soldiers from smoking cigars and pipes to cigarettes. Bear in mind that this was 1916, there were no "tobacco police", alcohol was not considered a vice, and conventional morals were SLIGHTLY different than they are in 2024. Big tobacco profited greatly during both world wars. After all, if some Brain Dead British General is going to send you "over the top" of the trenches to face the German machine guns with a bayonet, who would worry about tobacco use, which was not yet proclaimed to be second only to money as the root of all evil.

    • @capusvacans
      @capusvacans Před měsícem

@@KiwiVanderman You know that ppl got executed for cowardice for injuring themselves, right? It's not too hard to detect either in most cases, as self inflicted wounds tend to be in similar areas (ppl don't shoot themselves in the head to get an injury), and it's usualy possible to determine where the injury came from, kinda like csi these days can see where a bullet was fired from. And apart from that, you are a person of these days, not someone formed by the ultra nationalism and obedience to authority that was normal back in those days.
What you would have done back in those days is probably just keep your head down and try to get through it alive. Because you wouldn't be you, you would be the 1916 version of you, who wouldn't even have thought of a term like "military industrial complex", as it wasn't even in use. Who knows, you may even have been one of those guys who believed in the glory and duty of war and may have tried to be "heroic".
"I would have" is a pointless statement as you can never know who you would have been when formed by that period. It's similar to those "what would you do if?" questions, the only answer to those that can be even remotely correct is "i hope i would..." or "i have no idea".
You judge the behavior of the past on the morals and education of today. It's like claiming that I would be the one protesting at the coloseum against the gladiatorial games, when in reality, i probably would have been there on the stands enjoying the spectacle. Because that would have been 1st century me, and not 21st century me.

    • @firstname2853
      @firstname2853 Před měsícem

The F word was used a lot back then....
      Infact....
Even today swear words are used frequently in Britain....
It's like they make up for half of the spoken English Language....
Every other word is a swear word....
      F'ing this & F'ing that....
There are many Children who learn to swear before they can talk properly....
Some people can feel intimidated, nervous or scared when someone starts to swear around them as they are words that were commonly used in anger to insult or scare....
They are so frequently used in Britain that they no longer have that desired effect like they may have in other Countries....
There are many swear words & phrases that other Countries don't use or understand the meaning of....
I think that people who constantly swear a lot are not intelligent enough to have an intellectual conversation or debate....
      Also....
I think it makes them look & sound dumb, trashy, common, weak & uneducated....
      Basically....
Completely opposite to the desired tuff, scarey & intimidating, "Hardman" (or Woman) effect that they are going for....
Because on their own without their friends/gang or weapons....
They are still nothing more than the scum that has built up around the bowl an unflushed toilet filled with shit....
Even the people that are not trying to act hard or rebellious but constantly swears....
I look at them with pitty....
Because they obviously can't see how much they are degrading themselves....
I'm not saying that people shouldn't swear at all....
As there is a time & place for everything....
For example that everyone can relate to.... When you hurt yourself....
I just don't want to constantly hear it....
      Especially around Children....
Just like how you can't watch a film or TV programme nowadays without there being a sex scene in it....
Whether it is Comedy, Action, Fantasy or Sci-fi....
There is no need for it....
I have teenage & adult Sons & although we can talk about sex....
      Less is more....
They only need to hint at it....
They don't have to show us the whole act for us to know what they are doing....
It feels like i'm watching porn with my Kids....
Coz that is practically what it is.

@@capusvacans Resistance is not platoons of half trained middle aged men being left on muddy trenches by the elites to be incinerated to ashes by a thermobaric TOS-2. If they want resistance, have the politicians/elites and their sons step into the trenches and take the constant artillery barrages. It is easy to resist from Monaco or Kiev, London or Washington. WWI is a perfect example of millions of soldiers sent to the charnel houses, for a few inches of mud by their sociopathic overlords. Ukraine has been led down the primrose path to her hecatomb by the Neocons and the Globalists, now enriching themselves with the business of war. Is not toughness it is reasoning and observation.
