  • Battleground Valor American war drama television film depicting the harrowing true story of the US 77th Division's Lost Battalion during World War I. Directed by Russell Mulcahy and written by James Carabatsos, the film stars Rick Schroder as Major Charles Whittlesey. Set during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive of 1918, the plot follows Major Whittlesey and approximately 550 soldiers as they find themselves cut off and surrounded by German forces in the Argonne Forest.
Despite initial skepticism from Major General Robert Alexander, who views Whittlesey as an "overeducated New York lawyer" and his men as "acceptable losses," Whittlesey leads his diverse group of soldiers, largely immigrants and working-class men from New York City's Lower East Side, into battle. As they push through the German lines, they discover they've been abandoned by American and French forces, leaving them isolated and under siege.
Facing relentless attacks and dwindling supplies, including resorting to reusing medical provisions and scavenging from fallen comrades, Whittlesey and his men refuse to surrender. Even when approached by German captives urging them to give up, Whittlesey and his soldiers stand firm, earning the admiration of their adversaries.
After days of holding the line against overwhelming odds, a rescue mission is launched when an American pilot spots their position. Despite being mortally wounded by German fire, the pilot manages to relay the Lost Battalion's location before succumbing to his injuries. Reinforcements arrive, and the Germans retreat, ending the siege.

My Italian grandfather fought in this battle with the 16th Infantry, Company W. He was wounded and cited for gallantry with the silver star. He was also wounded in the St Mihiel offensive. He returned a coal miner job in West Virginia to raise seven kids who all became successful solid citizens. Grandad was most proud of his good conduct medal as he said it was harder to earn.

My grandfather Corporal Jasper Wooten (Google him) was put in for Medal of Honor but got the Silver Star for combat in France WW1. THAT SAID - as a 20-year US Army vet myself, I firmly believe that my grandfather never should have been there - as the US really didnt have a great reason to get involved. The Lusitania WAS carrying war munitions - which made it a legal U-Boat target. Of course that little fact was hushed up for decades. Somethings never change.

One of the best war-movies I've ever seen. The scene that kinda "stuck with me" forever, since the first time I saw it, was when they were trying to search the bodies of the dead Germans and one of them - a man who was already dying - shouted unexpectedly: "NEEIN! - NEIN! MEIN BROT! ... BROT IST MEIN" (No! Noo! My bread! This bread is mine!") and the American soldiers could have taken it away - they were STARVING there, afterall! - but he left the bread to the German (DYING) Soldier. It was ... simply HEART - WRENCHING!

It is also worth mentioning A very long engagement. The base of that story is ww1 , but it is also a mystery/detective story , a love drama and have very dark comedy in it too. My first time seeing this. It reminds of 3 other war movies that I have watched, but have no idea the names of.
1- A war about the Russian/Finnish war. It is set in winter and the Fins held off a much superior Russian force for months iirc.
2- Australian troops in Turkey WW1 and the shit show that was.
3- Another with Australian and New Zealand troops fighting Japanese(???) forces but I think it was before WW2. The machine gunner fired a light machine gun that was clip loaded on top and his loader handed him clips. He also reloaded said clips. They were being over run and the loader could not keep the ammo coming. The gunner kept shouting Bucky, Bucky as they were being over run.
Anyone know the names? I know I gave LOTS of information, but it has been awhile, sorry.
