- This is how to make easy coil pots. In this video, I cover how to make 3 different types of simple coil pot design. The straight cylinder coil pot, the curved coil pot, and the coil pot with decorative coil designs.
The clay that I'm using here is buff school clay by Potclays. I bought it in the UK from a local pottery supply shop.
If you are outside the UK, something like the following would be a good equivalent:
Stoneware clay: amzn.to/3n4DYLx

Anyone else's ceramics teacher make them watch this???
Yesss
No I search this for idea
Yeah
Not taking classes yet, but if they made me watch this I'd love it (it's a great instruction video).🙂
Yes , I just started yesterday 🎉
Thankyou for this I have to make it for my art class ❤️
I just subscribed. You're a great teacher! I appreciate the slow and fast videos.
Enjoyed the video, very relaxing to see you making these beautiful pots, thank you
I'm working on a coil canopic jar for class so I thought I would check this out and oh my word, your voice is so pleasant and soothing
Thank you so much this was super helpful! I’m attempting to create a honey pot in my ceramics class and this was beyond perfect
simple, clear directions. thanks - I'm exited to try this out tomorrow am
I haven’t made pottery for thirty-five years. I wish I would’ve had a teacher like you. Thank you for uploading this video.
Hi there, I'm glad it was helpful :)
Your pots are gorgeous. Can’t wait to have a go at making something myself!
I am brand new at this, and I only had one try at it without a good demonstration. Your instructions are EXCELLENT!!! Thank you.
Best explanation ever about using coils. Thank you.
I love the last pot!! Love your videos!!
I've just recently started doing pottery (which I enjoy a lot) and I really loved this video and the very clear, helpful instructions! Thank you so much! :)
Glad it was helpful!
Brilliant! I just watched your video on attaching a torch to a propane tank - then I thought I'd see what other videos you have and lo and behold, I've just started dabbling in pottery! Absolutely perfect! You've got yourself a new subscriber!
That's really lovely to hear! Glad you found it helpful, and I hope you enjoy dabbling...
Thank you so much, this was so easy to follow. You have the best videos I've found - we made a coil headstone to add to our doggie's garden grave - hope it survives firing! thanks again.
I am leaning to make one coil pot for the first time, it’s going great
Just lovely. Thank you for this very thorough and well thought out presentation. I feel as though I have learned a great deal and plan on incorporating this new found knowledge tomorrow morning. Thank you. Also, I have both “liked” and “subscribed”. 🥰
Thanks Claire, I'm really glad you found it helpful. Good luck tomorrow morning!
Well said! Me too (liked, subscribed) and will try this on the weekend
Wow That first part would make cute spiral coasters to match Cool
I made one... It came out amazing..
Thank you! This is an awesome video and has really helped me understand this technique. My coils end up cracking. They feel soft and not dry but they still then end up cracking as I go along building my vase. Can I just go over the cracks with slip? Water?
love the voice. needed ideas for my ceramics class, amazing vid!
Thanks Carson :)
Excellent way to teach
The coiling tips are so useful!!
I'm happy it helped :)
So beautiful!!!
great tutorial! Thanj you for sharing!
Thank you soooo much!!!!!’ So helpful
Thank you so much this is helpful for me thanks a lot ❤❤
wow your videos are sooo helpful!!! thank you!
Fabulous video!
So beautiful
you help me learn pottery
thank you so much
Very well explained..thank you ❤
so helpful, thanks!
Beautiful and easy, thanks!
thanks , glad it helped :)
I'd guess that making the coils as consistently as you can... without variations in thickness, the more success you'd have. Mine were all wacky!
Thank you so much for your very informative videos! If you wanted to smooth the outside as well, would you smooth each coil as you add a new one, or would you wait until the entire pot is done and then smooth the outside?
I tend to add a few coils and the smooth as a go along, hope that helps :-)
@@ThePotteryWheel It does help! Thank you!!
I just found your channel. So helpful. Keep it up!
Thanks Moein, glad it's helpful ...
@@ThePotteryWheel I’d be glad to know your comment about my channel 😌🙏🏼
Beautiful
nice job
Very nice. Thanks for the inspiration 🤩
I wonder how you glacé them, can I see how they look when they’re done? Kind regards from Mette in Denmark 🇩🇰
Very interesting video.
Beautiful..
You. Made. My. Day.
If I wanted to add a handle how would I do that? I'm making a coil mug but I'm not sure how to add the handle. Thank you for help!
Can you talk about the ideal clay for coil building along with temperature of firing? Very clear precise approach to your instructions. Thank you
Thank you very much for this video. I recently joined a pottery class, then realized right away I was in an advanced class rather than one for beginners. I've paid and don't want to quit, however the first few classes have left me feeling rather lost and very inept. This video is perfect. You did a wonderful job showing exactly how to make the base, join the clay and add decorative components. You have inspired me. I feel I can go to the next class and start my project with confidence.
Hi Robin, I'm really happy to hear that you feel re-motivated to go to your next class. Thanks for your comment and do let me know how it's going!
How did you make the coil clay?
Did you mix some ingredients
Or you buy it
Cause im a student and im confuse were can i get a coil?
WOW!
When I make slip castings they gets crack often.. how to prevent it need help.. do we have to put anything in when mixing slips?
Thans to you from PANAMÁ I like very very much this video send to me all your videos.
Really super.
Going to have my guys watch this
Thanks for the video, very simple & well explained! Appreciated. What is it that you are using as a "glue" to join? Is it just a clay & water mixture or an actual glue? If glue, can you suggest which is best?
Hi Michelle, I'm using 'slip' to join the pieces. This is just a mixture of clay and water. Here is a post on how to make slip thepotterywheel.com/how-to-make-slip-for-clay/
Dope
thank u this vid is so helpful i have to make an ancient greek pot for school
:D
Hi Denise - I'm glad it helped, I hope your project went well...
can one make coiled pots with air dry clay
Yes, definitely
Question: have you tried taking things with interesting textures and pressing them against the clay, I never really did any homemade decorations but I think it might be an interesting technique
Some examples:
Cheap wood
Honey comb
Pine tree branches
Sea shells
Unused and unwanted cloth
Pretty much anything will work
It's a great idea Aidan.
@@ThePotteryWheel thanks
It's been a while since I've seen this video the latest video on the CZcams channel "primitive technology" shows a alternate to clay
It's a mixture of wood ashes and water
I just thought that'd interesting y'know?
@@aidanwoodward3975 Thanks Aidan, I do like the primitive technology videos. He's great. I'll check it out. Thanks for the tip :P
👑
where do you get your clay? great video by the way!
Hi Honbee, I'm glad you found the video helpful. I get my clay from a local pottery supplier. You can buy on line though. Happy to put a link in the description above if that would help. Just let me know :)
@@ThePotteryWheel please do, i'd appreciate that greatly!
@@honbee3431 I put a link in the description, hope that helps...
can you let this dry and then use it, or does it have to be fired?
It has to be fired otherwise, it won't be water tight.
Is there a rule to increase length of coils as you build out?
Hi there, sorry for slow reply. I'm not sure what you mean, do you mean is there a limit to how long you make a coil? Not really, but they do get a bit trickier to handle the longer the coil is...
@@ThePotteryWheel Thanks. That was helpful.
I add a lot of water but it keeps on breaking apart
❤️
Which thing you use to joint a clay parts? .
It's just clay slip, which is clay dissolved in water
@@ThePotteryWheel Thanks for your reply😊
Meaningful channel! you can go far with this. I admire your hard work! I'm glad i found your channel. fruitful. You have made my day for me. enrolment to your supply of mood maker i've done. I'll leave the door on the latch if you ever comeback?
I'm doing my first pottery dishes and today was a bad day. Everything failed. I only finished one cup, everything else I managed to ruin somehow. I was thinking maybe this whole pottery thing just isn't for me but after watching this, hmm, maybe tomorrow I will give it another try.
Yes, definitely keep going :)
Girl how you make it dry without an advance device?
I'm not sure what you mean by an advance device. Do you mean a clay drier?
What is use gam Maam?
hi, do you mean what do I attache the coils together with? If so, its clay slip, which is just clay dissolved in water. Hope that helps
Скажите пожалуйста а можно смазывать дно вазы мукой с водой если у меня нету гипса
Вам нужно соединить глину с помощью глиняного шликера, который представляет собой смесь воды и глины.
do you cook it?
If you use pottery clay it has to be fired in a pottery kiln. If you use air dry clay it can dry in the air, but won't be waterproof. Let me know if you need any more info about this...
👍👍👍👍🤩🤩🤩
👍👍👍👍👍🤩💕
OMG MA'AM IT'S HARD FOR MY BROTHER HE IS 16 BUT YOU HARD DOING THAT FOR MY BROTHER😒 BUT THANKS MY BROTHER FINISH IT😊

pottery is really inaccessible in my country, it's quite upsetting how expensive it is. you'll have to rush your work in a 2-3 hour studio session or you'll be paying over $100s just for one piece of work.

I said toy clay
Superior English accent. Thanks for the tips.🙏🏻🌹
