The first famous black Uruguayan, was part of the team that won the soccer Olympics in 1924 and 1928, nowadays considered World Championship and also in 1930 he won the First World Cup. His name was José Leandro Andrade, he was from my town, Salto. French named him "la merveille noire." His nephew won the 1950 World Cup. You should also ask about Candombe, which is the most important music from Black Uruguayan. About the mate you bought, if it is the classical mate (made of a gourd) it needs to be "cured" before first use. I wish you could find an Uruguayan who can explain you how. If it is made of any other material... you just need a "bombilla" the straw, and the yerba mate. But even to start mate, it would be nice if you talk to someone because there is a whole traditional form to do it then it lasts longer.

Hi Austin... Welcome to Uruguay. First of all, congratulations on your channel. I've been following you during your visit to Buenos Aires, and now you've come to my country. I lived in Buenos Aires for 12 years. In our country, we have three major cultural influences: murga, candombe, and tango. Candombe comes from the Afro culture of our country, and usually on weekends in Montevideo, people gather in neighborhoods like Ciudad Vieja, Palermo, and others to play candombe. In February, there's an event called "Las llamadas," where hundreds of people with their groups play the drum. I recommend visiting the neighborhoods of Pocitos and Carrasco-they are very beautiful. The beaches are clearer towards the east, although it's nothing like the Caribbean. If you have time, I also recommend Punta del Este, the exclusive resort of Uruguay, where tourists from all over the world come. I live there. Hi, I'm from Uruguay. I just wanted to say the Río de la Plata isn't dirty, the entrance to the Rio de la plata is sandy. Both Uruguay and Argentina have sandy coasts and sand is brought by the Uruguay river stream. In colonial times the Río de la Plata was a way into the heart of south america, and Montevideo was the only place suitable to have a dock for big ships. I hope you are enjoying your stay!
I am from Colombia. Espera.
I really liked the format of this vlog, it was perfect. What I wish to see is the nightlife as well as your interaction with a beautiful young female tour guide that shows you more about the culture and things tourists do not find on their own.
hello. welcome to the country. I am Uruguayan and "the ocean" is not "dirty" as you say at minute 2:04. It is not the ocean, it is "the Silver River" which is not really a river, it is an estuary and that is why it is brown. We have oceanic beaches but to the east of the country.
Hey man! Really cool video. You may want to check out a local type of music called "Candombe", it's an important part of Uruguayan/black culture. Some days you can see them play on the street in different parts of the city.
Sup! I'm a first born American of Uruguayan parents. The water you are seeing is not dirty. It's an estuary and the fresh water meets the salt water in that area. Go to Punta del Este that is away from the river that divides Uruguay from Argentina and it is waaay bluer... I still enjoyed the vid though 🤗 just had to kick some knowledge ❤ also if you go farther up north, most Uruguayans speak both Spanish and Portuguese
You really did your thing with this video. I love the upgrade camera, audio is crisp, added more cinematography. The knowledge and content always been there. Keep going! Also, keep doing what you do bro, constructive criticism is great but I in particular do not want you to burnout. So keep doing what your soul tells you to do.
Auston's video productions are becoming top notch! Also impressed with his ability to make the effort to learn and speak Spanish and interact with the locals. Everything isn't just about 😼
There is a concept of "black" and blackness. They recognize admixture which is why she said "brown or tanned" like us. Had it been floyd, she would have said, "Negro or black." It does not mean "dark" it means brown or tanned.@@user-eo1we6qd2s
ILOVE the music in this video. I love it like Uruguay. That's a great country and people are so nice. I was three times in that country. My brother got married with a beautiful girl from Montevideo. I knew Palermo neighborhood in Montevideo and I think there are a lot of black people (I hope you undertand my writting). All the best, hugs.
Nice video brother. I wouldn't to ask them if they speak portuguese because if your portuguese was good enough, you would be able to speak decent spanish. Spanish speaker knows that portuguese speaker can understand them pretty well. In fact they will struggle to understand portuguese because it is faster and more compressed language compared to spanish slower and clearer. The point is: it is easier for us portuguese to speak spanish than spanish speak portuguese. when you ask them if they speak portuguese, they will be left wonder if it isn't easier for you to speak spanish, and judge you as less cleaver person.
Austin, these are the kinds of videos I like the best. We get to see the locals and the architect of the city and it doesn't hurt if some of the locals are pretty.😀 Keep up the good work.👍🏾
The water is brown because that is not the ocean. That is the river plate that empties into the ocean. Also it is not dirty. The brown color is from the sediment from the river.
The water is not dirty, is brown because that’s not the ocean, is a river. The widest river in the world that divides us from Argentina. If you want blue water you have to go to Punta Del Este where the Atlantic Ocean begins.
Hi Austin! I'm glad you are in my beloved Uruguay, and in Montevideo! I've moved to NYC for YEARS. I'm glad you feel comfortable there. We are known for being friendly and hospitable. That apartment looks GREAT! It has an amazing roof top and you can also BBQ! Yes, Montevideo is where the black population is mostly, and yes, it is around 10% and they are mostly (if I'm not mistaken) in the neighborhoods named BARRIO SUR and PALERMO. As someone said in another comment, you should have the experience of listening to the sound of candombe. IT IS AMAZING. The Montevideo promenade is also an EXCELLENT walk that everyone enjoys. Especially the Pocitos promenade. The quarries of Parque Rodo. Pocitos (the neighborhood), as well as Buceo, Punta Gorda, Carrasco. You have to try our meat and achuras at El Mercado del Puerto (Ciudad Vieja). The famous Chivito. Maybe a good option for this is La Pasiva or El Chivito de Oro. Well...I could go on and on. I'm here if you want to ask me anything. Hug brother and ENJOY URUGUAY!!! Oh! And Marijuana is legal but is sold in SOME farmacies but you have to be a resident and be registered. Its not THAT easy like MANY people think
I love the car free street zones, i think every city should have one designed for pedestrians only just for shopping and chilling. I loved the video, quality, content and the music..more interaction needed, hopefully in the next video. (but i suppose you can't force it as it will come out weird when talking to strangers)
Yea bro. I liked this mini vlog. Them 4 hr joints be too long 😂 You should start every new trip with an introduction video like this. Gave me some inspiration to consider visiting there myself.
Water being dark doesn’t always mean it’s dirty most of the time it has to do with the color of the floor. Especially if we’re talking about ocean water
Would like more food content. What did the sandwich taste like? What did it consist of? How much was it? Where was the restaurant located? You also showed us the name of the restaurant but didn’t say it. Also, buying a banana from a vendor doesn’t count as interacting with locals. Maybe you should try interviewing more people like what you did in Brazil but stay away from the sex oriented questions.
I’ve been following your brother… I can’t believe you have evolved in front of our eyes so much… Of course, we’re looking for the Contant with the females… But you’re opening up so many new places for us… I know the majority of us I’ve never been to Uruguay… And I only wish you much success to travel the rest of the world and take us with you… Much success, bro
This is the type of content I want to see. Exploring the city, speaking to locals, eating the food and immersing yourself as much as possible, This gives us a real taste of the city and county. Keep it up!
Bueno no hablo mucho y tampoco se adentro en la ciudad si hubiera entrado más en la ciudad talves veía más gente negra porque es común o más común de lo que él cree y la comida hay mucho pero mucho más por experimentar y en lugares más baratos o más caros
First, this is not an ocean, its a river...Second, its not dirty, its natural color. And yes, you will find much more afro american there than Argentina. Nice country with friendly people.

I just discovered your channel. I’m an Uruguayan that lives in England. You should go and experience candombe, it’s a dance from Uruguay. You can found it in barrio Sur or Palermo in the evening.
The colour of the water is because it’s not the ocean, it’s a river. The River Plate, it’s not dirty 😅 The Atlantic ocean in Uruguay starts in Punta del Este
I wish you the best. I commend your efforts. And I hope you're enjoying yourself. Videos are looking good. Travel is "fun" usually, but it's really not easy. When I saw you go into a bookstore, I thought, "Oh! Great, he's going to get a Spanish phrase book." Nope. Looking at your 2023 as a whole, it seems your plan is more less to maybe use Africa and South America as your launch points/home bases. I'm just one guy with one opinion, but I would say it's time to get that 15 minutes a day on Spanish under your belt. At the very least. You have to know it will make your life better/easier/more successful. Would you consider maybe getting some of those translator earbuds? Just one opinion, I'm reluctant to offer it to you, but I also want the best for you.
15 minutes a day of Spanish? You may as well not learn at all. I tried that 15 min per day stuff and I would forget everything I learned. I need at least 1hr per day
@@AustonHolleman Auston, I'm glad to hear you're making the effort. I did say "at least" 15 min, so I'm hoping you'll put in time --as you see fit though. I don't know what a day looks like for you; filming, booking flights, booking accommodations, keeping in touch with friends, social media, editing, searching music. But I imagine it's a full plate. Can I squeeze in one last opinion? I think you're better off asking if people speak English over PT. It's so, so, so voiding their history. They can forgive an American not speaking Spanish, and even though YOU know it's not Brazil, that question implies "you're all the same down here." Even a friendly statement like "sorry, I just started Spanish, my 2nd language is PT, do you know that?" Please forgive my suggestion, but I feel it's an important consideration. I'm always pulling for you! And thank you for what you do.
@@nathancasey7712 Thanks, I try to ease tips on him. A lot of people are coming at him with "help," so I just try to present options--and not try to cram it down his throat. Uruguay seems like a hidden gem. More African presence and economy seems to be the most stable in South America. My interest has definitely been piqued.
The shower, you can take it after a sweaty sunbath. Welcome to uruguay! The open water is not sea/ocean, it is a big river, Rio de la Plata river, the ocean starts in punta del este.
The ocean is not dirty. The Río de la Plata is an estuary, where the Uruguay and Paraná rivers flow into the sea so what you see is brackish muddy river water but it is not polluted and is generally safe for bathing.
Hi my friend the water in the coast of Montevido is not ocean water it is a river called Rio de la Plata that's why it looks brown. That rivers divides Montevido from Buenos Aires. Another think in Uruguay whites aannd blacks are not separate like in US or UK in Uruguay we are all Uruguayans and when you ask for skin color the people will look at you kinda confused because we don't do that separation in here we are all the same.
It's funny you showed a few books about German Military Leaders. Uruguay was a spot The Nazis planned to attack and takeover. Still a lot of influence in construction when you look closely at the buildings. Thanks for sharing this country, I am adding this one to the bucket list for next year.
Hello how are you? The water is brown there because in that part it is a river, to be more exact: that is the Río de la Plata (silver river), the widest river in the world. The Atlantic begins in Punta del Este
Yes, Yes, Yes show us more interaction with the locals while shopping and eating out really ads a more travel touch to get mire of a feel of how it’s like to travel to these places and what to expect when we interact with them.
Nice video. I will be heading to Uruguay soon when I’m in Argentina for 4 months. Making my rounds through South America for a year. Another dope city to check out in Uruguay is Punta del este. It’s very close and worth the trip.
I’m from Uruguay hahaha and the girl replied “you’ll see many blacks from other places such as Cuba”. She was innocent but she didn’t link Uruguay with blacks and probably didn’t understand exactly what he wanted or meant. In that neighborhood there are a lot of blacks ao no wonder he says it’s more mixed here.

I am from Colombia. Espera.
Why keep asking if they speak Portuguese when most South American countries speak Spanish apart from Brazil which was a Portuguese colony.
Brazil is a black country. So I guess they just assume.
Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana don’t speak Spanish either…
@@MrJones936 well obviously the French colonists countries speak French others speak English and some speak Dutch
@@jasontaylor404 America and Americans don’t know much about the rest of the world,Even Fox News stated that everything south is Mexican.
I really liked the format of this vlog, it was perfect. What I wish to see is the nightlife as well as your interaction with a beautiful young female tour guide that shows you more about the culture and things tourists do not find on their own.
Thanks! I’m on it
hello. welcome to the country.
Candombe is big time in Montevideo. I love it.
Everything isn't just about 😼
💯
But everything is about 🍑 bro
But everything is about 🍑 bro
You asked if there were a lot of blacks and she corrected you by saying, "Morocha" like us, meaning mixed like us.
Interacting with locals gives more depth to the video your production has always been top notch
Much better.. geting out and about conversing with locals. Who wants to stare at you talking in a hotel room all week
I do what I feel is right in the moment
Enjoyed your video. Spent 22 days and did not even see or do enough in Uruguay Great country
What you called an “Dirty Ocean” is actually a river.
This what I’m talking about!! Great video!!! Interactions are the way to go!!
Yo close to the end with "Here comes the Floyd" was Crazy as hell💀😂 This VLog was cool and I love the format
Great video! I enjoyed the music 🎶 in the background and the nice view of the city and great communication with the locals🎉
Them 4 hr joints be too long 😂
You should start every new trip with an introduction video like this. Gave me some inspiration to consider visiting there myself.
Continue doing all the interactions loved it
That place is 2-3 time more expensive too but worth it
Seems very laid back,go into more stores and speak with the people.
Love this style of content.
Water being dark doesn’t always mean it’s dirty most of the time it has to do with the color of the floor. Especially if we’re talking about ocean water
it´s river water...
@@caritos2927 I’m not saying it’s not dirty, idk but it still could be the floor.
@@GHCMargaritawell, fuck the water AND the floor cuz im not swimming in that lol. But that’s cool knowledge because I absolutely didn’t know that.
@@GHCMargarita It's suspended sediment (sand, silt and clay) transported all the way down from Brazil by Paraná and Uruguay rivers.
The 'ocean' you mentioned is not the Atlantic Ocean. It's the River Plate. Río de la Plata. Of course, being a river, it's not blue nor green.
Keep at it auston we watching, looking, and listening so God bless you brother stay up 👍.
Is not the ocean is a river...thats why the Brown colour...and you can Take a bath perfectly
I like this one a little more, interacting with the people is important. That’s where you get the real feel of the city.
Your gonna have to sleep with the Spanish lessons on at night lol. The Portuguese is on all the time
First, this is not an ocean, its a river...Second, its not dirty, its natural color. And yes, you will find much more afro american there than Argentina.
Nice country with friendly people.
I like this quality of your video in comparison to the rest of your video. It looks very professiona!
In Argentina drink mate 24/7 😅 like Uruguay
Do your thing Auston Represent ! You have more than 150 million Black people in Latin America! ----
A Book shop that's how you do it brother, a cultured brother is well read, well rounded and knows how to approach people on their social level. 👍
Suramericanos 🤦♀️
150 millones, donde?
Good video, was debating on Uruguay right after Argentina but eeeh maybe Chile instead . It looks chill but definitely expensive and more of a sleeper country like Paraguay. Correction: Santiago is right there with Montevideo , gonna go on a cut 😂
I just discovered your channel. I’m an Uruguayan that lives in England. You should go and experience candombe, it’s a dance from Uruguay. You can found it in barrio Sur or Palermo in the evening.
B.A is Rasist.. I have lived in both and bought home in Uruguay. Love it.❤❤
I’m three minutes in and what a beautiful, unique place… Definitely a vibe… I can see and feel the African roots there
I love the footage and the interaction.
Dope format.
The colour of the water is because it’s not the ocean, it’s a river. The River Plate, it’s not dirty 😅
The Atlantic ocean in Uruguay starts in Punta del Este
Can you go on a hike!? Everywhere you go, I would love to see some of the beautiful nature from a real hike
This is good content I actually get to see what’s it’s like being there
I wish you the best.
@@BobKnight-mm2zeVery good points. Also since he knows Portuguese it'll take a lot less effort to learn basic conversational Spanish
@@nathancasey7712 Thanks, I try to ease tips on him. A lot of people are coming at him with "help," so I just try to present options--and not try to cram it down his throat. I did my big South America thing a LOOOOONG time ago, and had zero info and nothing even remotely like a youtube where I could get actual humans to interact as I traveled.
Well done. Nice video. Uruguay is a great country down south. Enjoy!
That is not the ocean, the same with buenos aires, those cities share the biggest river in the world, its a river that's why it has that color
Uruguay seems like a hidden gem. More African presence and economy seems to be the most stable in South America. My interest has definitely been piqued.
way too expensive there.
@@leemelvin6514 yeah well you pay for what you get. The reason its expensive is because its safe compared to most places in South America.
La comunidad africana aunque es mayor que en argentina, no pasa de un 15% de la población
I like where you are now it seems more lively 😊❤
So cool man. Let me know if you need anything in Montevideo, I'm a local here - whatever you need, hit me up! Enjoy your stay.
What are the spots that a young man like him should visit?
The shower, you can take it after a sweaty sunbath. Welcome to uruguay! The open water is not sea/ocean, it is a big river, Rio de la Plata river, the ocean starts in punta del este.
The ocean is not dirty. The Río de la Plata is an estuary, where the Uruguay and Paraná rivers flow into the sea so what you see is brackish muddy river water but it is not polluted and is generally safe for bathing.
Fun fact: min 2:10 is NOT Ocean it’s the widest river in the world the Rio de la plata or river plate in English.
I like this walk through video show a lot of the city and the people 👍
Link to the accommodation?
Hi my friend the water in the coast of Montevido is not ocean water it is a river called Rio de la Plata that's why it looks brown. That rivers divides Montevido from Buenos Aires. Another think in Uruguay whites aannd blacks are not separate like in US or UK in Uruguay we are all Uruguayans and when you ask for skin color the people will look at you kinda confused because we don't do that separation in here we are all the same.
Great vlog! Very informative!
Seems like a nice warm vibe in that city; great camerawork.
What you do is not easy. Salute.
It's funny you showed a few books about German Military Leaders. Uruguay was a spot The Nazis planned to attack and takeover. Still a lot of influence in construction when you look closely at the buildings. Thanks for sharing this country, I am adding this one to the bucket list for next year.
I too, noticed that it , looked kinda of like he was Europe.
the nazis were not interested in that. only land that was taken from them in 1919.

2:36 damn thats american prices lol
The music and the plot ran smooothly👊🏾👊🏾👊🏾👊🏾👊🏾

Nice video. I will be heading to Uruguay soon when I’m in Argentina for 4 months. Making my rounds through South America for a year. Another dope city to check out in Uruguay is Punta del este. It’s very close and worth the trip.
Enjoy!
Just so you know The water u said was Dirty its not the Ocean it's the world's widest river
That's Is the Río de la Plata, not the Atlantic Ocean...
Brother you look Cleaner, Happier and more Relaxed not to mention Healthier. I just remember your earlier videos. Tell me, do you feel that Spiritual Awakening or anything like that? Either way looks good on you. Grand Rising young Man. 😂
Also, they have a celebration of african culture called Candombe where they play drums and dance in the streets in Barrio Sur.
Nice mix of classical and modern.
Bro I’m Uruguayan ,, the water is brown because it is a river , it’s the widest river in the world ,,, you need to go further up towards Punta del este to get to the sea
gald he did his research before visiting
