    Racism? What happened to you down there? In Uruguay we are used to seeing black people. 4 - 6% of population are African descent or mixed, and their music, Candombe, plays an important part in our culture. There are also Africans living in Uruguay, as well as Dominican (some are black), the same happens with Cubans...

      @@JayFocusedWhat are they as in what origin? Most of them came from the tropical forests of West Africa more or less in between Cameroon and Congo. Hence why black Uruguayans aren't as tall as the North Americsn ones. There are two major timeframes where this happened. The Spanish enclave that is now Uruguay started as a military and naval port on the region so it was an entry point of goods and slaves. Most of them were sent for what now are Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, Panama and the Caribbean, because their economy was agricultural while Uruguay was animal husbandry which wssn't vwry labor intensive, but a small percentage remained. Thus un the 18th century back when Spain was still importing and using slaves there was a wave from Africa basiclaly to work on small task jobs at haciendas. This legally ended in 1813 with the "freedom of the wombs" when congeniral slavery was abolished and impoeting lsaves was peohibited. And in the 19th century many African slaves fled in masse from Brazil into Uruguay as slavery was legally fully abolished in 1842. This second wave began to dwindle circa 1888 when slavery was abolished in Brazil and it fully ended around 1910.

    José Leandro Andrade, Uruguayan
    (Le Merveille Noire) was the first black soccer player to play in Europe (France1924). He played and won an Olympic medal for our nation..
    In Paris, Josephine Baker the most famous black actress at the time, invited him to dance in the Moulin Rouge. Well, for me, racism is in everywhere, the problem if it is on a grand scale or minimally. I went to the USA and there is a lot of the racism there. Human people always want to feel superior to others.

    I'm Uruguayan presently living in Canada my wife is half Haitian ( mulatto) and I believe we belong to a normal group of people in my country, just a normal working couple with kids nothing more, my wife never told me she experienced racism like she faced in Canada where police stop her a couple of times ( very politely of course) but mainly for been a half black in the university area after dark, she is an economist with two master degrees.
    She really adores to go to Uruguay and if it wasn't for her job in Ottawa we would move there.
    I don't mean you can find a couple of stupid people that come to you with non sense, you can even find racist people in Africa believe it or not, stupidity is not a national brand and is spread all over the world, but 99% of the population don't have that kind of racist behavior specially the population 50 and below will not tolerate acts of racism in public.
    I hope you had a nice experience in my country and if that was not the case I hope you give it another chance to know he real Uruguayan people, we don't have many black heroes that is true, mainly because our black population is tiny less that 6% total however they are represented in all our society . I studied at the military academy and had a very close friend and comrade after 5 years in the academy almost upon becoming army officers I realized he was black mainly because he mention it , what I intend to say is that we see people as our nationals and even in very traditional environments as would be the equivalent to West Point in the US we are not taught to judge by skin color but rather by what you do and what you achieve on your own.
    Perhaps you don't agree with what I will say but on my experience I find much less racism in my country that in the US or Canada in those societies you fill a form and you must declare to what categories of people you belong, you think you belong, you perceive yourself, you want other perceive yourself etc, fragmenting society in group and sub groups trying to find to what stop a person has to be assigned, just to fill a simple form.
    In my country when you fill up a form in any administrative office you have to put name and your document number, I hope I was clear to make my point.
    Anyhow if Uruguay was a bad experience in that sense I mean you experienced racism, I apologize on behalf my people and as I said before small and stupid people are all over the world don't let them ruin your day.

    Uruguay didn't use slaved workers from Africa but many Brazilian slaves seek the south to escape, their culture have the "Candomble" that incorporates African aspects to it ... Well educated , civilized and respectful population ... Food is great and very safe !

    • @JayFocused

      @@JayFocused .. Uruguay secured it's independence in 1828 ... Civil wars between 1830 and 1851 and slavery was brought to Uruguay by the Spanish and Portuguese since 1760's .. abolition was in 1840 and Uruguayans had many internal and external problems a the time ... UK had a strong interest in Uruguay at the time and slavery into the Montevideo and Colonia ports were not allowed by the British since the early 1800's ... Maybe do a little more research on South America slavery routes during the young nations postcolonial period.... Between late 1700's and early 1800's less than 20 thousand Africans disembark in Uruguay. If you want to find something bad to talk about Uruguayans check the genocides of Charrua and Minuano tribes to extiction ... but not African Slavery.

      You are splitting hairs. It's like saying that the nation of America, formed in the late 1700s, didn't import slaves. The English did.
      As if the country and people who would make up America weren't overwhelmingly of British descent and didn't maintain slavery on Day 1 of independence.

    • @amartin6617
      @amartin6617 Před 2 dny

      @@JayFocused There was no nations on the late 1700's South America .... there was no Uruguayans before 1828 ... Portugal and Spain kept fighting over the territory that became Uruguay after the British intervened in the territory in the early 1800's bringing and enforcing the Slave Embargo of 1807 to the region ... Visit Uruguay and you will see by yourself ... 90% is white and related to Spanish, Portuguese, Italians, British and others ... then try Brazil and see the other side of true African slavery ... just walk around and see the difference... today in Uruguay there is a total of 50k descendants of the original African slaves brought by the Colonial empires ... from a nation of nearly 3 million population ... There is "Candomble Uruguayo" that keeps their art rooted to Africa, Brazil and Native cultures ... Cosmopolitan populations like the US or Brazil benefited from wider genetic poll ... but facts and math show it's just not the case in Uruguay.
