Afrikaans is mostly taught in the Southern and Central areas in Namibia. All other places people have always been taught their mother tongues. In the last 10 years or so even more schools in Windhoek, Walvis Bay and Swakopmund have started teaching indigenous languages instead of Afrikaans. Majority of kids in school Windhoek are not doing Afrikaans. This is part of the Education policy to teach mother tongue as a medium of instruction from grades 1-3. You find a lot of primary schools in Windhoek and other major central and southern towns offering at least 6 languages at a school.
And just to add, Afrikaans did not come as a result of South African colonization. It was already spoken in what is now Namibia from the late 18th century.
Even when the Germans colonized Namibia it was already a lingua franca in Central and Southern parts of Namibia.

Ŕegardless most kids learn afrikaams in the street before they r taught in schools...there are many people that speak the language and never had it in school...what's your point...afrikaans will never die in namibia...it's how people communicate and express themselves compared to English

We were born in an afrikaans society...all the different tribes speak afrikaans...like she said we have made it our own...we don't speak it like how we were taught it in school...unless u r speaking it at a formal event than u have to speak suiver(formal afrikaans)

So in Namibia they typically only one native language? This is interesting because in SA it's common to meet someone who speaks at least 2 different native languages. I for one speak 7 native (non-european) SA languages

We use afrikaans to express ourselves better than English and also to communicate inter tribally

    • @ZAR_72

If IQ was measured based on the number of languages an individual can speak South Africa would have the highest IQ level in the world 😂. Like president Ramaphosa speaks all 11 official languages, Trevor Noah speaks 9 of them, I speak 8 (7 native and English). I don't speak Afrikaans, by choice. Something that's something very common among black South Africans. There's a tumultuous history with that language. The 1976 student uprisings can give you a clue with regards to that. But you still have black people who speak and study Afrikaans at school. It's matter of choice and I just chose not to learn it. There's nothing wrong with those who choose to learn it, just in case some people misread my text

@@sagenamugongo7008 Ok, we mostly use native languages to communicate inter-tribally and English as a backup. Most African immigrants actually complain that South Africans would speak to them in native tongues and not English. Somehow they label that as "xenophobia" 🤷🏾‍♂️
