How To Easily Redeem Capital One Miles (For MAX Value)

  • In this video, we’re going over how to redeem Capital One Miles for max value! Capital One gives people with credit cards like the Venture and Venture X a lot of options for how to use their credit card miles, but unfortunately many of these options can be bad. Because of this, I’m going to walk through which of these redemption choices should be avoided and which ones will give us the most value from our hard-earned Capital One Miles.
    The best way to redeem Capital One Miles is for travel by transferring miles from your credit cards to other hotel and airline programs. By using Capital One Miles for travel, you can find many ways to get at least double or triple the value of your credit card miles compared to other options! I’ll go over a few examples of how to do that in this video.

    I will say that anything above economy is incredibly hard to find on Capital One’s transfer partners unless you’re flexible on your travel dates. But for a normal working person with dogs and a kid on the way, we can’t be flexible. I’ve searched SO many routes and dates and trips and gotten nothing good to show up. It’s really unfortunate and I wish more content creators mentioned it.

    • @Daniel_Braun
      @Daniel_Braun  Před 3 měsíci +12

      Being flexible is honestly a key thing here in the points and miles game. If there is no flexibility whatsoever, then that is going to limit travel redemption options in some situations depending on where you’re flying to/from. It’s always better to try to pick a date range that you’re looking to travel rather than specific dates if you want the best chances of finding award seats in business or economy class.
      That being said, we’ve often been able to find options with transferring points/miles, even as we work around my fiancée’s work schedule where she is not very flexible at all. Sometimes we just have to look at multiple airports (we’re lucky because we have PHL and EWR or even JFK to search from)
      If there is no flexibility whatsoever, then chances of getting higher cent per point values with transferring points/miles can decrease. The best option at that point is to use the travel portal (Chase gives 25 or 50% points boost for that which is better than Capital One) or go the cash back route.
      I’d say to just adapt the credit card strategy for what fits your lifestyle which is different for everyone

    You should never use the pay for hotels/flights with points theough the portal. Pay the cash price with the card to get the 5/10% then use the cover travel purchase. You get to double dip.

    • @theolin
      @theolin Před 3 měsíci +3

      Nah it's not better than transferring in some cases, but say a hotel costs 100$ in the portal, you can pay with points for 10,000 or you can pay the 100 with the card and you get 1000 points and when you cover the purchase it still cost 10,000 points. This was your really only paying 9000 points maybe? But you get an additional 1000 points in this situation.

    I'm averaging about .05c per C1 mile for business class flights. The best part is that if the business class flight was a paid economy flight it would still be .01c pp which at least makes me feel like I'm getting a business class flight for the monetary cost of economy. 😅

      That's how I look at it as well. Recently went to Greece on Air France. I spent 110k points and $400 in taxes fees, so about $1500 in "real money". So that's about the same price as an economy flight to Europe.

    When did Turkish increase their price for United? I just used points to go to Hawaii with my wife for our anniversary in March and it was still 7.5k points for all domestic flights. I guess we got lucky and got in right under the limit.

    Is there any travel partner that would give me elite status for my 100,000+ venture x points? I looked for british airways, but I found that the status elevation uses "tier points" while the venture x miles are transferred into "avios." Even if one has many tens of thousands of avios (transferred from venture x miles), his/her status remains the same if he/she doesn't have many tier points.

    Question, for the cover travel purchases options, do you still get miles on the purchase and then use miles to cover for the backend would that give you more value than covering on the front end?

    • @craigstaker6896
      @craigstaker6896 Před 3 měsíci

      I believe so! I was looking in the comments for the same exact thing. I prefer to not go out to transfer partners because I’m not in the market for the lavish business class flights and vacations across the world just yet.
      I originally planned to only use miles for flights or rental cars because they gave only 5x miles compared to hotels giving 10x. This would be a game changer in that miles aren’t used at all while booking, so you could get the 5x bonus as well as the redemption value after as you are saying.
      For example:
      Option 1:
      $1000 round trip flight with the 5x miles multiplier gives 5,000 miles = $50 when covering expenses after. $50/5,000 = 1 cent/point value.
      Option 2:
      Same $1000 flight, but 5,000 miles were applied up front. $1,000 - $50 = $950 BUT only $950 is gaining the 5x multiplier. $950 at 5x rate earns 4,750 miles = $47.5 value. $47.5/5,000 = .95 cents/mile.
      Alternatively, if we use the same idea but for a hotel, which earns 10x miles instead of 5x miles, it would still be a 1 cent/point value when covering the purchase BUT only a .9 cents/point value when applying the same number of miles up front. (I’d show the calculations again here, but I’m too lazy to do another breakdown. )
      One other note is this allows you to use your points almost immediately instead of having to wait until your next trip to use the points.
      In summary, if you are someone that doesn’t care to convert your miles out to other travel partners, then it is better from a value perspective to cover past travel expenses (this can also include services such as AirBNB and Uhaul) instead of applying them through the travel portal directly.

    • @craigstaker6896
      @craigstaker6896 Před 3 měsíci

      @Daniel_Braun I think this would be a good point to bring up as well. I’m not sure if other travel cards or credit cards in general offer a similar way of redemption (besides 1 cent/point cash back where it's better value to cash out points and not apply directly to a purchase itself so that you can get points on purchase itself still.)
