Remember folks, EU tried conducting a study to prove piracy hurts the industry, but it accidentally proved that it actually helps it.

“Piracy is almost always a service problem and not a pricing problem” - Gabe Newell
Facts. Although sometimes it's sometimes a pricing problem. It's mostly a not available in your country issue. So it's pretty much impossible to watch a lot of US shows (unless they're Netflix or Amazon Prime original shows) without piracy
While I Don't pirate movies (because I Don't watch many) there have been countless times I was thinking of pirating a game on PC, but realised it had a switch counterpart. Because of the unique nature of the switch and how refreshing it is to play portably, I spent $60 when I could have got it for free, completely agree.
franklingoodwin , I watch Anime and I completely understand what you mean about the availability of content ✊. Hell, If you want to watch Anime you have to choose between Subtitles or Dubbing you can’t have both without paying for the whole series again which makes zero sense.
@@TurkishChubs Anime without piracy is almost completely impossible if you're a hardcore fan. Sure, you can get a lot of the generic current anime on things like Crunchyroll, but even things I want to watch on Funimation are unavailable in my country. Not to mention any older or less popular anime.
Melvin Cappellato, Absolutely 100% agree, it’s impossible without piracy
Disney: Buy our stuff, don't pirate
Also Disney: Disney+ is not available in your country
A beeping digital online only service, is region locked.
even when it is available subscription services screw you over if outside the US you'll pay just as much or more for half the content or less

yeah dont worry dont give them your paypal info someone will just have your password in a pastebin in a month.
Fun fact : In India you can get Disney + , HBO and an Indian Streaming Service just for the price of 1
Same with ESPN+
Same for WB and their stupid DC whatever it’s called. I tried to sub day 1 when young justice season 3 came out.
Linus is refreshingly honest here, i think alot of people would try to pretend they are perfect and would never be a pirate. I respect the honesty
I think people are either righteous about how nobody should pirate, or they pirate and don't see it as a bad thing. Are there many people who would pirate and then go on the internet and tell lies?
I can say pirating is fine as long as you pay a reasonable amount into the industry you pirate from, say maybe you love movies and already buy $300 of movies a year but need to pirate the rest. Or maybe you pirate stuff you can’t buy anymore. But if you pirate just to save money and don’t put money into that industry then you are bad.
As for Linus saying you’d deserve a free high def upgrade, I say it should be a fee. Like if you have it then your digital copy can be upgraded for $1-5. Otherwise there is less incentives for a remaster. Some will buy it but what about something like lord of the rings. Most anybody who will buy it already has so free upgrades would not make much money.
@@zeratulrus142 I think in his position knowing thousands watch him it would be easy for him to lie and pretend to be perfect for the good of his company
Zeratul Rus For me it’s about reasonability. For example I have a pirated copy of Pokémon Diamond on an emulator, but I only think that’s ok because I own it. Also owning thing no longer available I am ok with. Like pirating Zelda Windwaker would be chill

Imagine a world where your group of friends decide to watch shows on a paid service but the TV detects a pair of eyeballs that dont have a subscription and the TV calls the cops on that poor soul for "pirating" content and the rest of you for "illegal distribution". Piracy Laws only make sense to an extent and right now its just nonsense.
Bars get sued for this all the time.
I know this is a year old, but this was a real-ish concern when the XBox 360 first came out and there was the requirement for the kinect to be on. There were talks pricing for renting movies changing depending on how many people were in the room with you.

@@jayspeidell a local game store I frequent got sued by UFC for hosting a viewing party a while back. It's kinda insane
Piracy is honestly mostly the fault of distributors. Look at music for example. Almost nobody pirates music anymore because it's so easy to purchase and buy whenever you want.
Yet when you want to watch a film, you have to be subscribed to god knows how many services to get full access to everything you want at once.
That's ignoring obscure films you'd never get to see otherwise or films that you can only see on some nasty compressed streaming service.
This. I was eager to switch from having my local downloaded music. But then I got spotify premium, and it is so hassle free. You get everything organized and such. Its great
"nobody pirates music"
Me, using VLC because Spotify doesn't have anime songs: _yeah, I guess no one pirates music_
Exactly. Music is very easy to get - every song I want to listen to is on Apple Music, so I never need to pirate.7/10 times, the movie I'm looking for is only available on a specific streaming platform, where I either need a subscription, or buy a DRM ridden copy that I can only play on specific devices, during specific times, and I have to do a dance for the CEO of the company to hope they don't revoke my right to watch the media.
Lol I have over 8TB of music on my pc. Non of that music is easy to buy. All pirated music. Same goes for movies about 5TB of movies. All pirated as well. You really should learn how to use the internet to find stuff

"In general, we think there is a fundamental misconception about piracy. Piracy is almost always a service problem and not a pricing problem. For example, if a pirate offers a product anywhere in the world, 24 x 7, purchasable from the convenience of your personal computer, and the legal provider says the product is region-locked, will come to your country 3 months after the U.S. release, and can only be purchased at a brick and mortar store, then the pirate's service is more valuable. Most DRM solutions diminish the value of the product by either directly restricting a customers use or by creating uncertainty."
- Gabe Newell
And this is why I buy from Steam instead of from Origin.
Every time Linus' kids come on screen, Luke gives the purest smile ever!! It's lovely!
I really appreciate the transparency on Linus' part. At least where I come from, It is not uncommon for people to have this sort of ethos when it comes to downloading things. I think it is the correct thing to do, support the creators that you like in exchange for the content they make. How you do it (if you can) should be up to you.
i have the feeling a lot of people don't even know how to pirate anymore, there are these apps or websites that you can watch a lot of shows for free. but the problem is this software is always full of viruses and spyware, when pirating movies i never had a virus

One of the reasons Microsoft has been the OS and Office software leader for three decades is that they really don't put much DRM on their products even though they could. Brand and product familiarity is what keeps them in 80% or more of personal computers. You might be pirating Windows, but you're still using Windows, and when you DO eventually pay for an OS one way or another, it will more likely be Windows.
I’ve bought ltt stuff and will buy a water bottle soon, I keep ads on(when I remember lol). I’ve been watching you guys for years and will keep watching.

2:03 goddamn this hits my heart hard as a Destiny 2 player. Like, I love the game, but ffs the annual pass was bad enough of a monetary gate, now the season pass + dlc model. Its getting really bad
Destiny 2 is the gaming equivalent of a truck stop town. Cheap stores all around, billboards galore, god awful fast food, and nothing else of substance. I feel like I walked into a casino every time I've played that game. It's shameless how they hustle the player. I stopped playing shortly after I picked it up for that reason.
Njebs would you rather them release a whole new game every year because that’s what it’s pretty close to, destiny is no where near as bad as a battle pass that gives you no additional content
@@andrewhughes4924 I'd prefer the annual pass model as it better suits destiny's dlc model. In an ideal world, of course everything should be obtainable via normal play, of course this isn't realistic though. That being said, the season pass model just feels like an unnecessary addition, it's like a mini dlc.
What pissed me off the most was when they add all the new seasonal content and make it feel like it's available for everyone, but then have practicallu every interesting bit of that season have the "you need to have the season pass to use this" slapped onto it. I missed out on the sundial and vex offensive gear which is some of the best gear out there like breach light, repeater and martyrs retribution (which is an entirely unique architype of weapon) because I didn't buy through the gate Bungie had setup.
@@andrewhughes4924 You don't have to buy the battle pass and you still get new content, plus you can actually earn COD points from the free battle pass tiers and eventually use them to buy the battle pass without spending any real money. It's a much better system than Destiny 2, which I quit playing for good almost a year ago (Destiny had been my most heavily focused on game since 2014). I had to quit because of the increased cost and frequency of payments compared to what they used to offer. They just kept making the game worse and worse over time.
@@andrewhughes4924 I'd rather a game didn't feel like a mix between coupon hunting, being hustled, and being the target of a blantant cash grab every time I start up a game.

MakeMKV and Handbrake are my friends! I'll never have to go and dig up that old DVD for my wife again.
To add to this old topic: One of the first games I had pirated was Oblivion because I was too young and just did not have money. But I distinctly remember every moment of it and have since given Bethesda a ton of money. Piracy of their game eventually did not inherently mean that it was a bad outcome for Bethesda.
i don't know if it was an autralian thing but i remember when i was younger there was this thing called ultra violet i think and a lot of DVDs came with it but it was just a code to be able to download a copy or like watch it online or something but that was when i didn't have internet cause i was a child and mum didn't believe in computers so i never checked it out
just looked it up not gonna go into details (worth having a look into for learning purposes) but its defs not an Aussie thing (didn't mean to sound self centered just never heard anyone speak about it like... ever)
It wasn't just an Australian thing. It was also available in the UK and Europe. It was pretty much always a palaver to do. It was needlessly difficult to do. The codes would often not work. It's almost like the movie studios didn't want you to have a digital copy as well as the physical copy
@@franklingoodwin I never had an issue with it.
@@franklingoodwin yeah I just looked into it only some studios supported it and you had to connect each ones website account to ultra violet then put the code through or something along those lines and Disney had their own version but the I've lived by the way linus does as well if I've bought it then I will download it if that disc is damaged or lost I know it's not legal but its fair laws (especially laws pushed into place by people paid by corporations for the sake of profit) aren't always fair it's one of those grey areas.
On the point of games if there is no trial (as there usually isn't nowa days) I'll download and play enough to decide whether I enjoy the game and then either delete or purchase and as someone with over 1k games on steam I am not shy on buying games haha

When you have something like gigabit internet at home and a PC with probably 2TB SSD he'd have a much faster time just finding the movie on the pirate bay, downloading it, taking a piss then coming back to a digital copy ready

After a lot of Internet research I learned how to safely pirate and found that movie. Over 10 years later I have triple digit TB of movies on my homeserver.
I'm pretty sure I'd still buy blurays upon blurays if I didn't have to learn it back then to get that artificial deflaction of that movie. Now I only buy the ones that I want to support after watching them.
I 100% agree with you Linus, I have just finished transferring my video collection to plex, over 600 movies not including tv shows, and it irritates me when I see producers piece mill content to get the public to buy multiple times, or selling digital copies, then not giving a way to download those copies which when they go belly up leave you with nothing. 9:35 The remaster of Star Trek The Next Generation was a very expensive and time consuming undertaking.
The VFX shots were recorded on film, each shot consisted out of multiple passes. So they had to scan multiple rolls of film, clean the scanned images and then composit everything together just to get the VFX shot.
Then they had to scan all the film of the actors (the entire show was shot on film), clean every scanned picture, color correct and then compsit everything together.

But, I adored the show in season 1, bought all the novels and fell even more in love, and bought each season on Google Play for $20? $30? because I wanted to directly support them. I re-watch the whole show before a new season airs, so it has definitely been a worthwhile purchase. Would love something like a lifetime personal license ! You pay like 20-30$ to see it at the theater and get access to every edition (3D, 4k, HDR, surround, re-cut, remasters, 8k etc... ) at their launch. It could be cheaper if you buy it later without the theater pass.
I certainly wouldn't buy every movie I watch like that but would certainly do that for the ones I'm hyped like Dune at the end of this year.
Not sure if I agree with getting remastered versions when you purchased an original version 5+ years ago type situation because remastering takes extra work for upscaling, etc, depending on the quality of the original film.
Now, current movies that are shot and edited in 4k+ is a different story. It's ridiculous to even bother selling the different resolutions of digital copies for different prices or even bother selling the different resolutions. Often the movies I go to purchase, all resolutions are the same price, but why would you bother buying anything other than the highest quality?!
I believe that's the thinking as most movies from the last 20 years were originally made in HD and just downscaled to fit on dvd

Don't get me wrong, I pay for games, I own a Switch with about $800 worth of games.
If i like the game, I'll buy it. I bought BoTW and the DLC-s, $90, and I've spent 200+ hours playing it.
I bought most Dawn of War games, Portal, Besiege, BeamNG, KSP.
I spent at least 100 hours in every game listed, of course I'll give them money for it, after pirating the first time (If i had a demo at first...)
The same with movies. I go to the cinema whenever I like the movie that is showing, but I pirate most of them.
As well as TV shows. I won't pay $10 for a movie I'll watch once. I'll buy it if I loved it after I pirated it and I want to rewatch it multiple times in the future.

One of my biggest pet peeves is you can walk into a shop looking to purchase you favorite new show on physical media. Problem is they only have it available on DVD as in never got a blu-ray / 4K blu-ray release. This problem is exacerbated when you can go on iTunes / Amazon Prime / Netflix and watch that very same show in HD or 4K. What's even worse is when a show gets the first season or two released on Blu-ray but then the rest don't get released or only get released on DVD.
A prime example of this is the fact that I own the show Seinfeld on DVD and currently there is no better release available physically. However I can go on Hulu (soon to be Netflix) and watch the entire series in HD. Never mind the cropping / aspect ratio issues as that's neither here nor there and has nothing to do with my point.
To boil it down, the powers that be, be it studios or whoever, insist on putting up all these "barriers" that make it difficult for me to simply enjoy things in a manner most convenient to me. That said I'm not expressly condoning piracy but I can understand why some people do it.
In germany yoou can copy your blueray either digitaly or nondigital, for i.e. you own LOTR and make a copy to yoour PC you can watch it on your phone or tablet etc, as long you own the original DVD or Tape. It's made for the reason of "safety duplicate" in case of breaking the original.
I pirate movies, ever since the Blu-ray age started, lmao
Except for some childhood details, due to the fact that I'm 7 years younger than Linus, I always behaved exactly the same.
Grandma buying Warcraft 2 is the most heartwarming story I've ever heard.
Thanks for this video, it gave me ideas on how to better contribute for the things I watch and play!
Amazon prime saves me a LOT of time and travel. Especially trying to compare and shop.
The King and his men
stole the queen from her bed,
and bound her in her bones.
The seas be ours, and by the powers;
where we will, we'll roam.
Yo ho, all hands, hoist the colors high.
Heave ho, thieves and beggars; never shall we die.
Some men have died and some are alive
and others sail on the sea.
With the keys to the cage
and the devil to pay,
we lay to the fiddler's green.
Yo ho haul together, hoist the colors high.
Heave ho, thieves and beggars; never shall we die.
The bell has been raised
from its watery grave,
hear its sepulchral tone.
A call to all; pay heed the squall,
and turn your sails to home.
Yo ho, haul together, hoist the colors high.
Heave ho, thieves and beggars; never shall we die.
Yo ho, haul together, hoist the colors high.
Heave ho, thieves and beggars; never shall we die.
Yo ho, haul together, hoist the colors high.

it a pirates life for me
Letterkenny broadcast in Australia on SBS, and is now available to stream for free by anyone in Australia on SBS's free streaming service SBS On Demand.
Final Fantasy 7 was on PC, I still have my 4 CD copy by Eidos. It still has a bug that if you play it in DX9, all the AMVs play upside down to my knowledge.
Who is paying for the remastering ? / what incentive would you have to remaster it ?
People who haven't seen something before and don't want to watch a 480p version of an otherwise great show

20:00 Even though I have adblock turned on, I usually click sponsored links when they are available. Heck, I've even purchased stuff at a discount through those links.
Linus always wears hats, pirates wear hats.
Linus has a beard, pirates have beards.
Linus IS a pirate confirmed.
Also, Luke's hair is more majestic than usual in this video.

I really appreciate the level of honesty that Linus showed here. This made him even more relatable and trustworthy in my eyes than he already was. 👍

I thought this channel was LMG clips not LMG 25 min episode
It's technically a clip
Been a pirate since 99. If I lived in the 1800s I would have been a pirate.
Pirates weren't really around in the 1800s, more like the 1600s
24:00 I used to always get emails saying I have Amazon audio all the time because I used it once 😂
ive watched thousands of LTT videos, across ALL of your affiliated channels(EXCEPT the "apple" channel), which i ALWAYS thumbs up, regardless if i watch the entire 2+ hour builds, yet i use an adblocker. so for a moment there i somewhat felt bad, but to be honest Ive also bought 3 packs of your LTT cable ties, so i completely feel absolved of any wrong doing, lol. thanks guys, keep up the EPIC work, i watch atleast one video each day from you guys! keeps the PC DR. away!🤗
