21:31 This is EXACTLY why bad controls are the single worst mistake a video game can make, bar none. If you always have to stop to think about the controls, you never hit that point where things are second nature and begin happening subconsciously. A very fun episode with a great lesson at the end!
Surprised they didn't do this on War Thunder since that game has much more in-depth simulations of the vehicles. It would be the same story for driving as World of Tanks with the control schemes being far too different from reality, but you learn quite a lot of the anatomy of tanks when playing War Thunder.
You would be surprised of how well you remember where ammunition, fuel, and thickness of armor is on different tanks. It's also interesting because as you get the hang of how tanks are designed you can somewhat assume where critical components and weak spots are without being familiar with the tank.
It makes me immensely happy to see Austin here! I wasn't a Theorist yet, and I hadn't even heard of Game Theory when the other creators were still sharing their videos on the Game Theorist channel, but Austin I remember! Just so happy to see him here.

To be fair, most tanks have been manufactured with the mindset of, "It should drive like a car or a tractor." It's not something like the old steam tractors where you have 15 levers, one for power, one to release pressure, one to turn left, one to turn right, one to allow you to turn left or right, one to allow you to move the other 14 levers, etc. It's literally throw someone in, pedals be either gas and brake or brake for either side and the tillers act like they would on an old tractor or a steering wheel to act similar to how it does on a car. It will just ride differently from the two, as cars aren't as heavy and tractors don't have a large 75mm cannon sticking out on the top.
While the aspect of application (driving and gunning from gameplay) probably isn't the most direct, the tactics are. There's a very recent anecdote of this from Ukraine about two M2 Bradleys taking on a T-90. One of the Bradley commanders recalled back playing WarThunder and had his gunner aim at the turret ring barrel and vision block of the T-90 as they appear in the game of WarThunder. So was it applicable from the game as far as gameplay to operations? No, not really. Was the tactics translatable? Yeah.

Austin had plenty of personal issues (family, health, stress) he had to deal with and left because it became too much for him to continue making content for GT. A lot of the videos he did make are reuploaded on a channel he inherited called Shoddycast in addition to the reasons why he left. And his work honestly was the most ambitious in my book because crazy god-tier levels of math went into his videos, as well as the typical levels of research that goes into your typical GT episode.
Also, all of these guys had similar series on the channel but all left for various similar reasons, and soon MatPat will follow. I believe all of them have gone on to host their own channels and create content on their own pace.
Side note: Thank you for pointing out who everyone was! I'm only vaguely familiar with some of these guys and didn't recognize who a few of them were, and I didn't see anywhere that MatPat listed their names in the description or pinned comment.

Yeah, I had actually just found and watched Austin's video addressing why he left Game Theorists and was under the impression that while the parting was mutually agreed upon, there might have been some bridges burned in the process. But seeing how excstatic they were to see each other again, I guess there really wasn't any bad blood.
I’m so happy to know that the theory channels will live on even when Mat retires. I’m also very glad he is easing us by counting down, wrapping up loose ends, and going out in a positive manner. Thank you Mat for all you have done. I know we all look forward to the occasional cameo from you when you are able to.

I talked to a guy who'd just graduated from the US Army tanking school. The M1 Abrams controls were fairly similar to a basic controller so it was easy for a lot of the guys to adapt to driving and shooting them.
I'm only just now watching this video. I know these guys don't know me at all, but watching this video, I teared up and got hit with a giant wave of nostolgia.. Because of my home life, I always turned to youtube for comfort. These guys raised me. I was so sad when one by one they dropped off of the channel (or at least their shows), so seeing them all together again has me in tears. You've achieved everything you ever wanted with this channel, Matt, and all the others. I hope you know what an impact you've made on so many people's lives
