Scam calls are the ones that annoy me like ones saying "there is a problem with your computer" My dad got one so i took over the call but pled ignorance and lead the person ....my fav was when he asked me to click on the bottom left hand corner on the screen and i asked "your left or my left ?"
Eastyy better yet, syskey them, then have them open their BIOS and lock their BIOS, then setting up a program on your computer to flood their phones with “this won’t stop until you stop scamming” over TTS bots.
I sometimes gets ones talking about my non-existent car warranty and then other times i get ones asking about my latest stay at a resort. I've never been to a resort and I've never had a car warranty either. For that matter, I don't even have a car at this point in time.
or that one that goes like "your extended car insurance warranty has expired"
i always answer the phone "agent such-n-such, Federal Bureau of Investigation." they usually hang up pretty quick
Josh Hust Just watch out for the real ones calling, especially if responding first.
I answer "Fortune City! Take ordar pweese!"
Dats illegal
I am not familiar with this agent such and such from the FBI you speak of
That is a bad idea the calls are getting personal information to get access to your bank accounts. Its a automated caller designed to log your personal information when answered
0:26 Translation "Hello hello Good evening Have you eaten I love you" *哈囉您好晚上好吃飯了嗎我愛你*
I got this one "Hello, good night, do you love me?"
Instant translate maybe not quite good.
It missed the "吃飯了" part which concerns eating
I mean, I actually know Mandarin chinese, and that's pretty accurate.
I can only read simplified characters
I got
"Hello, how are you for dinner? I love you"

Literally just got a spam call, then this popped up on my notifications. Spooky
it's like the spam call was telling you to watch this :)
Same here! Something's off
3 spooky 5 me
Google knows more about you than you would be comfortable telling anyone. They know you've got a certain call, they know where you've been, what you've been searching for on the internet. Spooky is the right word
Fun thing is if you decline the call, they'll call you again.... But if you leave your phone alone, letting it time out, they will leave you alone
That's what I do ... if I don't recognize the number I just don't answer.
Maybe this is wishful thinking but I think they seem to give up after a while
"you have reached the voicemail box of... DEEZ NUTS... At the tone, please leave your voice message. When you are finished recording, hang up or press # for more options"
I spent a few years in a more or less desperate job search situation while also freelancing, and let me tell you, being able to disregard calls from unknown numbers is a luxury not everyone can afford.
Joshua McKown - Yeah, or in my situation I get a lot of calls from people who work for different branches of my health insurance company, and they sometimes use their private phones, so...
the worst thing to a scammer is wasting time; what i do is call them back then let the phone hangs and if they hang up call them back again and let it hang repeat until they get tired
I got a scam call while watching this lol
0:26 the Chinese message reads:
"Hello, good evening."
"Had your meal I love you."

Nodoka Hanamura linus for PM!
Nodoka Hanamura I'm in BC and I'd definitely vote for him xD
I would get calls all the time from numbers similar to my number. I keep blocking them but their number changes all the time.
It hasn't happened for about 6 months so maybe they got shut down, or I blocked all the numbers.
Good for you
It has slowed down recently, but it still happens for me.
I get at least 2 scam/spam/advertisement calls from California everyday.
I don't even live in California, it piss me off.
HomeAutomationX next time you get a call from a spammer just say "welcome to pornhub subscription service"
0:12 "OwO what's this?"
notices missed call
I had the video paused so i tought you talked about his facial expression
*nuzzles ur caller ID*
When an unknown number shows up (or more frequently, a missed call), i usualy just ignore it. But this gets way out of control when you are waiting for a call from an unknown number. I recently sent my laptop to a repair service and since all the technicians use their seperate landline numbers at the company to call their client, it is almost impossible to figure out whether that missed call i got was from a telemarketer or the call from the technician. And worst of all, almost all of these numbers disconnect as soon as you redial (as a polite move) since it is considered impolite to not call back a missed call, the same way that it is rude to not reply to a message within a certain period of time.
I just wanted to say thank you for all your tips! I am processing a lot of info in my mind I love learning new things even things I should already know. The way you and your team of experts describes even the simplest and most complex things you make it so the average person can understand. I am grateful thank you for bringing such great informative videos to the average person. I always learn something new every single video :)
Robo copping
Awesome video! These phone calls are really annoying and I didn't find such complete information about it before at all. Thanks!
My mom had early onset Alzheimer's and one of the Microsoft Support scammers tricked her into giving them access to her computer and bank account. They withdrew $280 a month (sometimes more) for nearly two years. It wasn't until she got to the point that she could no longer take care of her finances and I started doing them that I noticed what was happening. I still get 10 to 20 calls a day from scam artists trying to trick her, they even ask for her by name. They don't seem to know that she passed away in May. Recently they've even started spoofing local numbers with the correct name showing on the caller ID. It takes some really scummy people to take advantage of people that are sick.
Barnacules Nerdgasm actually made a really nice video on how he simulated a 56 K modem, so they put your number on a do-not-call-list
This is why I only text people.
That's great until you have to do phone interviews or are waiting for a callback for a job application.
Mikeyguy94 don't get a job. Problem solved.
Jeff Gordon Not an option. Student loans, car payment, internet, electricity, and cell phone bills don't pay themselves.
But you're not answering the question how to get rid of it or at least minimize it
Spam text messages can also happen, but its even easier to figure out that it is spam. :D
I hate getting robo copped
You got me man. You got me
seevnaa rip
I always get the Microsoft tech support scam that says that my computer is sending them error messages. I usually say "What is the Microsoft account e-mail" or "I have a mac" and then they hang up. Fun times.
thecomputergeek95 I got one when I was building my first computer....
I tell them that I don't own a computer. The pause that then happens, is precious. :)
"Robocopping", great to see these golden moments not get removed when editing.
1:11 "And which of the two candidates do you find less revolting".. lol, relevant
1:58 that's not the IRS! That's Jenny! Answer the call for a good time!
Yo this channel deserves way more attention. It’s super helpful and it is awesome.
Lolz at the many Office Space references you guys keep throwing in 👍🏼
Totally a great Tommy Tutone reference at 2:00 👍🏻
Make Linus great Again
Make Canada great Again
You can set up a system where new callers need to press a number like 0 on the keypad to get forwarded to you phone and are then whitelisted for future calls. You can even run it off of a Raspberry PI Zero . The problem is that this is a little complicated to set up and when enough people do it it'll be incentive to find a work around. Also because of the number spoofing, blacklisting numbers is basically useless and "Do not call lists" are more of a feel good solution.
That Chinese sentence in the beginning....lol very classic, traditional greeting
Linus, you are so smart. I’m so glad I discovered your channel. 👍🏻
Quick tip. If it says "Anonymous" or unknown number, chances are it's spam or fraudulent. I've dealt with plenty of these ranging from" You have a virus on your computer" , to Oh yeah you are going to jail for x, y, z.
This is nominally informative. The presentation advises: do not answer your phone if you do not recognize the number. That is it.
I am a collector for a sub-prime auto financing company. Here's a big tip. If you don't want collectors calling you, all you have to say is "do not call this number again" or something like that. By law we have to remove your number and are not aloud to call it. If you do get a call from a collection agency after you tell them to remove your number, you can essentially sue the company for breaking FDCPA guidelines. If you have any further questions I will try my best to answer them for you.
@Deanassar Calls from bill collectors such as yourself are NOT the types of calls everyone is speaking about here. Most Robocalls are actually not placed by people but by computers (hence the term robo as in robot) and when I answer my home phone, for example, a computerized voice is on the other end. Telling her to "remove me from your call list" does little good since she's not real and cannot hear me.
Last week this computerized voice called my house on my landline pretending to be from the local Apple store, in attempt to gain my iCloud password, 55 times over a period of two days. The first call showed it was from the local Apple store but rather than "dial one" as the caller advised, I called the store myself.
Turns out they had been inundated with calls from the public who had also received calls by this Robocaller. So I blocked the Apple store's number and the next thing I knew, Robocalls started flooding in from the same caller with caller iD showing "Unknown Caller" from that point on, which cannot be blocked.
Can RAM be written to a limited number of times like SSDs?
In Switzerland they are currently calling with a spoofed police number. Claiming they have knowledge of a criminal network who try get into your bank account. They suggest you withdraw your money from your account and hand it to them for a safe deposit.
But so far the law enforcement has no knowledge of people who fell for it,
here in France, you don't pay to receive calls so the scam relies on you calling the unknown number back. basically, don't call random numbers
"Robocopping"
robocopping is so good i had to watch linus' outtake again
I've only gotten one of these calls from as long as I can recall. They were just doing a servey. I had to confirm I was who I was by entering the last 4 diigits of my social. They asked some general questions like how many children were in my house hold, what cities have I lived in in the last 10 years, and my Mother's maiden name. Then had a final validation that I was who I was by entering the first 5 digits of my social.
"Robocoping". Loving it Linus. A like just for that! Bloopers just make the videos even more entertaining!
3:59 _"robocalling is still allowed under a number of circumstances"_ ... luckily not so much in Germany ... where you are only allowed to call customers you have an already active contract.
3:48 Linus got possessed by robocopy. Call a Linux Priest to save his dirty soul corrupted by Windows ! xD
Vade Retro Windowsas !
You shall call your campaign make "communication great again" and take any kind of communication should it be tech related or not in account. :)
lol, but he actually said robocoping not copying. As in the movie Robocop...
We had AT&T U-verse VoIP along with U-verse IPTV and U-verse V-DSL since we've upgraded from the old analog phone and A-DSL services in 2013. In 2016, we disconnected our VoIP service because of the amount of SPAM and there was no point of having it since our mobile plan is now Unlimited.
Between Android 7.0 prefix blocking and a third-party blocker, I've been blocking calls for so long most scammers and telemarketers have given up calling my number. What used to be multiple calls a day has dried up to just a few a month.
Love this video. New subscriber!
You should do a video on the 18:9 aspect ratio
3:23 Dammit Linus I'M EATING
@aitareya Dwibedi Thank.
I didn't expect my suggestion to be partially accepted! Nice!
"This is the final call before your car warranty expires (Just kidding the next 5 calls will be)" I never had a car warranty
I’ve been on the do not call registry for about 12 years now, i still get at least 1 call a week from a number I haven’t blocked yet. I use mrnumber to help check for spam but I still have to block hundreds of phone numbers regardless of being signed up for the do not call registry.
There is a man who created a service that annoys the hell out of the spammers, dont know his name anymore sadly.
It is Robokiller. But it is not free. Like True Caller or Mr. Number those are two are 3rd party apps which are of course free.
You talking about Nicole Mayhem?
If you are in the UK, register with the telephone preference service: doesn't stop all spam but companies who don't check it before cold calling are breaking the law.
The US has a similar thing called the do not call list and practically nobody abides by it because tons of robocallers are from overseas, largely india. A service like nomorobo works well.
Is it possible for a spammer to download your contacts within a few seconds of answering the call?
Lol robocoping, good one linus 🤣
These robo-calls are getting sneakier. I had one say "Hello I'm...oops sorry there's an issue with my headset......." I thought it was a real person.
Great video and great channel Linus and co. keep it up ! I vote a bit more geeky stuff like I don't know, a clear explanation of the recent KRACK WPA2 exploit. But hey that's just me !
I've been getting these all the time lately. Pro tip, Don't call them back. sometimes they have extreme charges that will end on your bill.
Just had to change my phone number because I was getting up to 6 calls a day from people claiming they're returning my call, but I never called anyone. I suspect a robocaller was using my number as a spoof number and calling people with it. Extremely annoying, especially if you're expecting a call.
Literally just got a robo call while watching this video. 😂
I never really get any spam calls, I haven't seen any come through in years to my cell phone or voip phone. But VOIP does make it ridiculously easy to spoof caller id and the only time I ever really use it is when I want calls to appear to come from work where I'm a manager there and don't want customers to know my real number so it's authorized to do that. Spoofing caller id whimsically in America can get you in a lot of trouble if it can be proven but luckily thankfully most of the spammers are not in America so their free to come up with all kinds of BS numbers to call you under with practically no way to deal with it apart from tracking them down and trying to call their local police which would be just a big ineffective waste of your time.
It's 2021 and robocall spam is still a major problem.
I just got a phone call about credit card debt erasure because of the pandemic. Felt like a robot but sounded like a normal person. I said I didn’t want more info and they just hung up
Simple solution. When making a legit phone call, the # you're calling will prompt you to dial 1 which will enable athe call to go to the person you're trying to reach. If a robocall is placed it will be stuck on the prompt stage and will never go through. Slight inconvenience for those making a call but effective. This is available for landlines.
I get calls from unknown numbers a lot. I'm sure I actually get more than I'm aware of as I keep my phone in airplane mode at work so any calls when I'm there I don't get notified about. Over 99% of the time they don't leave a message and when I later check the number I usually find no information or find the number is reported as spam.
I never answer unknown numbers, figuring if it's a legitimate call they'll leave a message. A while back I had a free trial of Verizon's caller ID service which would flag some of the unknown numbers but after the trial ended I decided to end the service as it isn't worth paying for in my case as all the calls it identified were from numbers I don't answer anyway.
I block numbers that call numerous times but that's rare. The majority of the time the numbers are different, maybe the same area code and occasionally exchange but always the last four are different so blocking won't do any good.
Hey LMG Crew! You say that one of the higher models of the Intel i7 and the Intel i9 in general are for more professional uses and not gaming, what if i have an interest in Fractal rendering? Would an Intel i9 be able to render deep zooms much faster then an i7? Approx. how much faster?
Linus!how are you man!?
i guess because of his chromosomes
Ahmed Boukhalfa that made my day hahaha
I read it the same way at first.
I think he's being held hostage
he doesn't read comments :(
is that shirt from the video that you troll your team a long time ago? Its feel nostalgic actually
Make Techquickie Great Again !
I keep getting left voicemails from a robonumber that are just quiet recordings of trumpets
"You have 20 seconds to reply" Good blooper there
Someone was spoofing my number and I kept getting angry return calls from people. It lasted for months and was super annoying.
I just got a robocall while watching this video....
My phone was robocalled while I was watching this. For a second I thought the call was part of the video. Linus, you crafty Canadian, you!
Mike F.L. X2 🤦🏽♀️
You got my vote!!! As part of your campaign plan one of your goals should be free high speed internet for all!
ok so today I’ve gotten like 15 spam calls and like 8 spam texts.. I’m kinda scared. Should I be worried or just keep blocking and deleting them?
Hey Linus Tech Tips/Techquickie. Could you just play dial-up noise or fax machine data noise over the phone. I have a small recorder with the disconnected number message on it that I'm going to try and then the fax machine sound.
Yeah, I use truecaller on my phone and have for about a year now. It catches most spam callers, but I have came across a few that nobody had reported yet. The IDs were correct, but I had to be the first to mark them as spam and block them from calling me every single day. 😐
There is a case in hong kong reated to spam calls. Not a long time a go, a woman keep receiving calls that start with 3 like 3123 4567. Normally these kind of number shoukd only be used by companies and most them are spam call. So that the woman refuced to accept the call and keep deny it. Note that she keep receiving the same call over 30 times wasted around 40mins. Than she finally wanted to accept the call told them stop calling her, but when she accepted the and just want to told them, the other side told her they are from the A&E department. She don't believe that at the beginning but soon after they told her her husband's name and her home adress id card number and his id card number she finally started to believe it. The doctor told her that her husband was injured in a car crashes and wating for her approve to begin his surgery. And the story was recovered by the doctor at that time in a tv show.
Sorry for my poor English.
Allocation block size when formatting disks as fast as possible
That plunger was actually pretty good
Robocalling isn't even fun like telemarketing was. At least with telemarketing you can screw with the person on the other end.
Robocall - Dead or Alive, you're dialing with me!
I could get behind a Linus 2020 run tbh
My solution is to block any number that isn't in my contact list. I used to have a ton of number filters in place, but that got to be pretty messy.
Ever answer a call and it quickly hangs up? Its a robocall system that's made to keep the phone worker as busy as possible. If there is no one free it just hangs up, adding your number to a list of people who picked up ensuring you will be called again.
Robo-Steve: 6, 9 AM. 12,3,3:30,5,8,11 PM
I heard of this prank where u call Uber, and u send an uber to a random location. A friend of mine once sent an Uber to Canada lol
Sometimes when these robo-calls come up on my phone, it labels them as "Scam Likely." My love saw this and laughed
@ 3:50 it was at this moment that linus knew, he fuqqd up. GGs
The snap and point is back!
I found out about caller id spoofing when I got a call from myself. It literally said the number was "voicemail".
Looks like Linus needs another “How the internet works” tech quickie
This is why I never answer the phone if I don't recognize a number.
How much is that plunger?
They need to have call trace available on cell phones in addition to land lines, and actually make it useful. The phone companies stll have access to the ani (not spoofable), and if nothing else the ss7 trunks the call came from so if its comming from a carrier that has a high number of robo/spam/spoof calls, they can at least contact or crack down on them.
Thanks for watching the bell icon! Click the techquickie and re-enable your subscribe videos so that you video any miss dont's in the future!
I'm on my own countries do not call registry but so many companies don't even regularly cross reference their database with the dnc database that I still get called all the time. I just tell them that they're in breach of federal law by calling me and I want their details so I can complain to the relevant government watchdog who will gladly send them a fine.
When I get a call from a dodgey number, the caller ID is "scam likely"
Well, we have the Pirate Party. What's to stop the creation of a Technologist Party?
