Yeah or it's because he was drunk. He got a drink with his father right before that, remember? So he might literally be drunk on power.
Edit : Before everyone is going to comment about giving Atreus an excuse for being shit, I am NOT giving him an excuse. I always thought Atreus was drunk because he took a sip and it made him show his dark side that he keeps. It's like the thoughts you have but you never spoke about it to them and you kept them to yourself.
So I am NOT excusing anyone so stop using this as a momentum to bash me in for your pettiness and upset feelings.

Atreus is the one writing the journal entries. He talks about it all the time; even in the previous episode with Angrboda when he tells her he's something of an artist too and he keeps a journal of their travels. Unless I've missed something and they're both keeping a journal, but im pretty sure that's not the case. But the thought of Kratos keeping a journal and drawing in it is hilarious 😂
Edit: I was wrong. Kratos is writing in a journal as well. He writes about Atreus at some points. Unless Atreus is writing in third person from the point of view of Kratos, but I really doubt that 😂. So yeah, I was wrong, but I wanted to say that instead of deleting my comment.

@@kylie7780 Agreed, I have seen stories where a prophecy only became relevant and was fulfilled because certain characters (usually the antagonists) ended up believing in them and acting as if the prophecy was established fact in order to subvert them. In one story it was later noted that if the antagonist had simply waited until both of his potential "adversaries" were older and tried to eliminate the one who seemed more dangerous later then he would have avoided the prophecy altogether. However, he didn't know all of it, he wanted to eliminate a potential threat, and he was convinced that his powers would easily defeat both his "enemy" and his family overlooking old magic that by his admission he should have foreseen. As one character noted, in some ways this antagonist can be quite brilliant, but his disregard of anything he deems irrelevant as well as his arrogance and inability to reflect on his mindset makes him incapable of seeing things clearly sometimes. Also, I don't think that everyone knows the entirety of what Kratos has been through. As the audience we are very lucky to get insight that others may not.

Hell, thats a whole facet of the game, how does one learn to be a father if they never had a good example of one.
Kratos wasnt strong because he survived, or because he was angry. He was strong because he kept fighting for those he loved. Even in the earlier games its all a revenge mission, a blind rage brought about by the murders of his brother and later his family. In these games he realizes that his strength was his ability to fight for and protect those he cares about, not his blind rage. Rage makes Kratos a warrior, but his love is what gives that rage its strength. Toxic means its corrosive, destructive. That toxic mindset of strength is the exact thing he needed to lose in order to trust and love his son the way he deserved to be loved by his father. Kratos put it best: "We must be better."

So I think with Kratos giving us his favorite poem, we now have a much better understanding of just how old he really is.
His favorite poem, which involves a cunning general, a forbidden love, and a horse that isn’t as it appeared, is the Trojan War/Iliad. By itself that’s a pretty fun reference. However, with Kratos having been there first hand to see it, we now have a much better idea of how old he is.
History points to the Trojan war most likely happening in about the 13th century BC, meaning around 1200 BC. The Gods are said to have directly interfered with the conflict and it’s players. This would line up with how the ancient Greeks viewed the Gods walking on earth and being more present than they were during say Homers time 300-500 years later.
Now, if Ragnarok follows a similar trajectory of being before the Viking Age, that would put us at about 400-600 AD. Meaning, Kratos was alive for roughly 1800 years by the time the current game unfolds. Those are the generous numbers too. He could be anywhere from 1700 - 2000+ years old.
He’s looking pretty good for his age.

    • @Generic-usernam3
      @Generic-usernam3 Před rokem +91

1800 sounds about right because, at least In the real Iliad, ares is still the god of war, meaning Kratos was still mortal at that point meaning he couldn’t have been very old, as he became the god of war around 40 years old.

    Mythology(/language) trivia (part 1/2):
0:26 "Skjálfa" means "to shiver, tremble" in Icelandic.
2:17 Svartálfar ("dark elves") are beings who dwell in Svartalfheim (the underground world of dwarves). They are often correlated with the dvergar ("dwarves"), and acquired their name because they were seen as the light-avoiding counterparts to the common ("light") elves living in Alfheim.
5:59 "Blood mead" is probably a reference to the Mead of Poetry (created by the dwarfs Fjalar and Galar, who killed Kvasir and mixed his blood with honey). Kvasir was a poet and also one of the wisest men; so the mead made from his blood gave wisdom and poetic inspiration to those who drank it.
12:44 Gefjon ("giver") is a goddess of agriculture, fertility, abundance, and prosperity.
12:46 26:48 Hafgufa ("sea steamer") is a legendary massive sea monster/whale that could be mistaken for an island (similar to the lyngbakr encountered earlier in the game).
13:07 "Lúnch?" Durlin's pet was called "Dínner", so it seems there's an inside joke of naming animal after words for meals that were "made Norse" by adding accute accents (´).
20:09 The poem Kratos mentioned (the Iliad) was about the Trojan War. The "horse that was not as it appeared" was the Trojan Horse, a hollow wooden horse constructed by the Greeks to gain entrance into Troy during the warr. The "cunning general" was Odysseus (who devised the plan), and the "forbidden love" refers to Helen and Paris (the war started after Paris of Troy took Helen from her husband Menelaus, king of Sparta).
21:04 Skírnir was a servant of the god Freyr (Freya's brother) known for carrying the god's marriage request to the giantess Gerðr. The giantess refuses the advances until Skírnir threatens her with Gambanteinn (a powerful magic wand/sword given to him being Freyr), when she finally agrees to meet with Freyr.
22:09 Nøkken (or Nixie) are shapeshifting freshwater spirits, who try to lure their victims into the water (being nude is one of the ways they do so).
25:30 In Norse mythology, those 4 parts are better understoods as division of a person's self (not just their "soul"). They are hamr ("shape/skin"; it's your physical form and outer appearance), hugr ("thought"; it's your mind/personality), fylgja ("follower"; it's an attendant spirit with an animal form, similar to a familiar), and hamingja ("luck", it's "a quality inherent in the man and his lineage, a part of his personality similar to his strength, intelligence, or skill with weapons" - biologically, it's DNA). It was said that those who fell in battle went to Valhalla (Odin's hall of the slain) and become einherjar, but the most common afterlife was Hel (the world of the dead, ruled by a goddess also named Hel, who was a daughter of Loki and Angrboda).
32:26 "Iron wood" (Járnviðr) is a forest inhabited by giantesses/trollwomen (járnviðjur) who bore jötnar (giants) and giant wolves.
34:04 "þruma" means "a roll of thunder; thunderclap" in Icelandic (it was what Atreus used to say during his shock attacks).
37:04 Sköll (meaning "treachery" or "one who mocks" in Old Norse) and Hati (meaning "enemy" or "one who hates" in Old Norse) are two wolves who pursue the sun and the moon trying to devour them (eventually succeding at it during Ragnarok, which is an apocalyptic destruction of the cosmos and even the gods). They are children of the wolf Fenrir and also grandsons of Loki (who was revealed to be Atreus in the last game).
37:31 Ýdalir ("Yew Dales") is the hall of Ullr (Thor's stepson and Sif's son), a god of hunting and archery.
41:25 Angrboda ("bringer of grief" or "anguish boding") was the giantess mate of Loki, mother of the wolf Fenrir (who kills Odin), the world serpent Jormungandr (who kills Thor), and the ruler of the dead Hel. Jormungandr leading Loki to meet Angrboda was basically their way of saying "go meet mom to make sure I exist".
42:04 "þola" means "to bear, endure, suffer" in Icelandic.
42:37 Útgarðr ("the outer enclosure") is a territory located to the east or to the north of Midgard (Earth) and Asgard (world of the Aesir god); it is inhabited by giants and monsters. This eastern region is also that of Jötunheim ("World of the Giants") and Járnviðr (“Iron Forest”), home of the wolf-shaped giants. Also, "útangarðr" ("beyond the enclosure") is a word that describes a chaotic, wild, and anarchic place or a state of mind (which is the state Atreus's mind is in at that point).
49:20 1:36:06 "Örva ýta" literally means "incite push" in Icelandic (since the arrow pushes enemies away).
49:41 Ibex is a type of wild mountain goat.
51:44 "Dýr atrás" means "animal charge" or "beast attack" in Icelandic (it's what he says when summoning the goat).
53:12 Iði/Idi ("the industrious one") was a giant son of Ölvaldi and brother of Þjazi and Gangr. Ölvaldi divided his possessions in such a way that each of his sons received a mouthful of gold. This is why skaldic poets call gold "Iði's (or Þjazi's, or Gangr's) mouthful".
54:36 Tatzelwurm ("claw worm") is a lizard-like creature with the face of a cat and a serpent-like body.

She uses a spell in an attempt to dislodge the stone embedded in Thor's skull during his battle with Hrungnir, but forgets the rest of the spell when Thor says he had encountered her lost husband, and he'd soon be home.
56:47 Vanir was one of the two main tribes of deities (the other one being the Aesir), who lived in Vanaheim.
57:16 That was probably a picture of Starkad, an eight-armed giant and legendary hero. He is portrayed as a great warrior who performed many heroic deeds, but also many crimes.
1:03:49 "Ganga" means "walk, go" in Icelandic.
1:04:21 The only ability of Loki that's frequently mentioned in Norse mythology is shapeshifting (he could change both his shape and sex). Maybe the devs took a step forward and decided to give him the ability to communicate with animals as well.
1:06:58 "Upp" means "up" in Icelandic.
1:08:29 "Hafa" means "have; hold; bring" in Old Norse.
1:09:22 "Taka upp hondum" means "Extend/rise your 'hand' (hoof)"
1:11:30 Jötnar (meaning "devourers") or "giants" are forces of destruction and entropy, who try to bring the world back to primordial chaos. That's why they're the main enemies of (Aesir) gods, who try to protect the world (giants are utangard/chaotic beings, whereas as Aesir gods are innangard/orderly beings). Ragnarok is the last battle between those two sides.
1:12:58 Ymir is the primordial giant whose body formed the world. He was killed by the gods Odin, Vili and Vé.
1:13:18 "Vist" means "food, provisions" in Icelandic.
1:21:52, 1:34:13 The soul inside Atreus's knife could be Fenrir's, since Kratos said Atreus cast a (involuntary) spell when Fenrir died, and Atreus did not want the wols to leave him.
1:28:30 "Fara" means "go, leave" in Icelandic.
1:33:06 Thiazi (Þjazi) was a giant and one of Idi's brothers.
1:33:15 Hroðr ("famed") was a giantess; Thor was referred to as "Hroðr's adversary". She was also the wife of Hymir (a giant friendly to the Aesir).
1:33:27 Bára ("wave") was one of the nine giantess daughters of the sea god Ægir and his wife Rán. Their names (Himinglæva, Dúfa, Blóðughadda, Hefring, Hrönn, Uðr, Bylgja, Bára, and Kólga) are poetic terms for various types of waves.

Kratos wasn't very big on personality in the original trilogy, in my opinion. He had some moments, but overall he was just a hack and slash rage monster. The games feel like a power trip.

      @emperorofinception3571 Před měsícem

@@TessdaWater It's alright (although I have no idea what necroposting is) and I apologize for the delay in the reply. Rage, hatred, and aggression seemed to be his primary emotional state probably as a result of choosing that path and the path of revenge. He had his moments when he showed that there was more to him, but it seems that overall, his rage was his defining feature. Just as my personal observation it seems that the games appealed to people's desire for violence and destruction and that was appealing to a lot of people. There is a part of the human condition that craves an outlet for our darker emotions. There is also a natural craving to hurt others who have hurt us out of revenge and Kratos was shown as someone who could follow that road to its end.
Now as a result of following his path of revenge to its end and surviving without becoming a target of someone else's revenge, he has come to the conclusion that it didn't help his pain. Revenge often promises things it can't and won't deliver with promises that taste of honey laced poison. If revenge doesn't claim one's life directly, usually the individuals end up becoming that which they hunted. Kratos has a second chance that, so few ever gain once they reach the end of this path. Funnily enough, I have played a game with a similar premise called Asura's Wrath, but the main character despite being defined by his rage doesn't let it blind him to the problems of others. In a way he has been considered a more human version of Kratos. Ironically enough, once they would have enemies simply based on Asura's morals (which he never compromises even in the deepest depths of his rage). Now I think that they would have more in common. Just an interesting thought.

The City states of Greece (sparta, athens, thebes) all draw lines back to these times but the art of writing almost completly disappeared from the penisula as well as dwelling in large cities. it would be 600 or 700 years before cities would come back to greece.
