    My son is a new CNC machinist. Holds a second job on weekends. Excellent work ethic. His CNC supervisor is verbally abusive to everyone and his company keeps the foul mouthed rude supervisor because he is technically excellent at his own tasks. Guess who is now about to leave that company and the trades and pursue a different career?

    Worst is when a business creates the miasma of disgruntled, toxic, lazy and poor performing workers. Intentionally. While claiming they were "maximizing profits". Then complain about the resulting atmosphere that the executives created, with deliberate intent.

    The worst companies I've worked for are usually ones that have the following:
    1.) The boss micromanages everyone
    2.) Coworkers and management gossip like it's still high school
    3.) They don't do performance reviews and or provide room for improvement
    The best bosses I've had allowed employees to learn from their mistakes, led by example with their vision and promoted collaboration within their team.

    Once you have established competence, etc., you can interview for values (but you need to know what they are and what is most important). In our software engineering firm, we describe a scenario, when the customer provided the full and correct information but the job was underbid. Do you go back to the customer and tell him/her that to complete the job it is going to take longer and cost more than was originally thought, or go back to the owners and tell them they are going to lose money on the job. The answer is not automatically clear, but for us, if we tell someone we will do it for X, then we follow through. We try to do better next time on preparing the bid. For another company, they might want to go back to the customer. But we are looking for engineers that match our values. Having that value has cost us $500K, (and no pay for the 2 owners for a year) but got us a reputation that brought in much more longer term. BTW, our company employee handbook had rules like "dress appropriately", rather than give details about what was allowed and when. If you hire the right people you don't need as many rules or as much supervision.

    @michaelludvik2173 Před 2 měsíci +7

    It's easy to say "only hire thoroughbreds", but what's missing from his answer was recruitment strategy. I would have love to have heard about whether he thinks recruiters are worth the money, or whether Andrew should be paying better, or setting up an apprentice program or a retention program etc etc. My biggest observation about people in the construction world is they tend to staff up for big projects at the last minute rather than view it as a long term relationship with staff. I think the answer with Andrew is likely hiring 2 apprentices out of high school or trade school every year and keeping the best one a year later, and then really committing to keeping them around.

    • @davinasquirrel7672
      @davinasquirrel7672 Před 2 měsíci +1

      I would have thought hiring directly is the best strategy. That way, generally, you get a feel as to whether that person is a good fit, has the right attitude, etc. Outsourcing hiring is a very bad idea.

    • @michaelludvik2173
      @michaelludvik2173 Před 2 měsíci

      @@davinasquirrel7672 you are correct that direct is best but if you put a job post on LinkedIn you get hundreds of responses, most of which are for folks with a resume like "bank teller" when I am posting for a "structural engineer". It's exhausting.

    The tech industry doesn't have a high turnover if you treat your employees well. Just look at SAS, they have good employee benefits and low turnover.

    • @tscoff
      @tscoff Před 2 měsíci +2

      I work in the tech industry and part of the turnover is we can do data analysis. We’re really good at it. We can calculate when our annual merit increase is less than the rate of inflation how far behind we are. We can calculate how much the cut to our benefits last month is as a percent of our paycheck. And we can also do the analysis that proves that when we switch jobs we earn 50% more over our working lifetime as we’d earn if we stay in the same job.
