  • Take a look back at the last century of banned fashion, from restrictions on the use of bird feathers in hats in the 1910s, and women's shorts being banned in the 1930s in some cities, to the flag-printed protest clothing of the 1970s and the illegal counterfeit purses that rose to popularity in the 1990s.

      @Lucky Twelve of course they don't. the school dress code system is so digustingly mysoginystic...

    • @soupforfree
      @soupforfree Před 3 lety +538

      @Lucky Twelve my school had rules where a guy could wear an outfit and it didn't go against any of his rules, but a girl would wear it and get in copious amounts of trouble. (In protest, boys started wearing only these outfits.) One group of around 20 girls (including me!) signed a petition to have these rules changed, and the girl who originally organized the petition got sent to detention. FOR CALMLY SHOWING THE TEACHERS THE PAPER! This proceeded to make her mother so mad, that *she* made a petition, and had 200 people sign it. (It got on the news!) So the teachers backed down in defeat and removed the dress code. (We literally don't have one anymore.) So now the teachers are too scared of us (or specifically, our parents) and haven't made a new dress code.

    On the fur discussion it is also important to discuss that most faux fur is polyester or acrylic based which are both plastics. These significantly add to the microplastic and microplastic fibers in ecosystems not just at end of use but every time they are cleaned or shed particles during wear. Trading fur for faux fur is, in many ways, just moving to another ecological problem.

      I was looking for a comment like this because the end of the video bothered me too. it's hard to find a perfect way to have fur and leather, whether they're faux or not because overproducing and consuming plastic isn't eco friendly, but buying real fur has its own problems too. i think rather than saying "faux fur is better" or "real fur is better" we should look at the effects of both. this problem isn't black and white like the last part of the video makes it seem.

      I mean, just look at the newsreports, what politicians or business ppl are wearing.
      Men: all in the same suit with more or less the same tie
      Women: all types of clothing
      The only thing that offers more choice for men instead of women are watches.
      But hey, a watch is just a small accessory, so chances of a ban on it are way smaller.

That didnt matter, though, Indigenous folks would be fined &/or incarcerated for their use of feathers under these laws despite the fact that these communities were absolutely not contributing to declining bird populations & the fact that some of the feathers / clothing using feathers were spiritually significant or essential to performing certain ceremonies, etc.

    Faux fur is NOT a good alternative. Neither is faux leather /pleather. This is something I've only recently learned after years of buying faux leather jackets. Fake fur and fake leather is all just plastic, and is harmful to the environment, namely the ocean. Especially faux fur, since the individual hairs are all just strands of super dangerous microplastic. I've decided that if for some reason I really need fur or leather for something, I will buy the real deal secondhand, like at a Goodwill. That way I'm not giving money to either harmful industry.
