    This will help from spending a lot of money buying new audio boxes when you can make your own especially in certain audio situations I appreciate it thanks Pat.

      I have a lot of miles on those snakes. They are so I can drop my X32 rack on the corner a stage and run those boxes out 20 feet right to the front of the stage to make patching super clean and quick

    Nice job.
    I have made quite a few multi-channel cables/snakes from scratch for a few recording studios I have built as well as made many hundreds of ground lifted cables for out board gear and consoles. (I have a Star-Grounded system in my studio with a dedicated grounding rod only for the studio). Always interesting watching someone else making improvements...
    Well done...

      Thank you so much! The sad thing is when I made those the price on the snakes were like $12 USD and now they are $40 I think... I would now just buy a box of the goods Belden grey 24/2 cable with foil shield and drain to make those.

      @@patthesoundguy Yes, I get you. I have more multi-channel cables to buy, but as you know they are very expensive these days with quality connectors and quality shielded wire.
      Years ago I had the energy to make my own cables with Neutrik and/or Switchcraft, but I don't really have the time to do that anymore, so there's always an endless quest to find quality cables at a decent price.
      I need longer runs also compared to years ago since I moved all my outboard gear behind the console, which requires longer runs and I also need to make sure I have quality shielded cable that is low capacitance.
      Always fun chatting with another audio guy.

      @@uptownphotography Have you watched Sullivan's Crossing? That cabin is down the road from from where I grew up and I used to go to and stay in that cabin as a kid, it's a Boy Scout cabin. Also off of that same road but the opposite end is the trailer park where the first season of the trailer park boys was filmed

    good Idea for a breakout but I would use the metal box for shielding, no metal shield on the back of those connectors like on the original connectors.

      Sorry for missing your
      comment. Yes those boxes make great inexepensive pedal enclosures especally for testing before you spend the money for a more expensive box

    I'd recommend securing the plates so they don't scoot around while you are soldering :)

    If you use a metal box do you need to ground it? Or is it grounded through the metal connectors?

    • @patthesoundguy
      @patthesoundguy  Před 3 lety

      That's a fantastic question... You don't have to ground the box. It can cause issues sometimes if it is grounded to all of the different channel grounds. Some jacks have an extra tab to connect the shield to the metal housing of the jack socket which in turn can ground to the metal box. Some xlr jacks are all plastic except for the contacts.

    How would you make it, if it were to be put into the wall?

    • @patthesoundguy
      @patthesoundguy  Před 9 měsíci +1

      It's very similar except you need an in wall quad box and a plain cover plate to put the XLR jacks into. Or even easier is you can buy 4 XLR jacks already in a wall plate for very cheap online. Cable goes into the box in the wall and you can solder everything at the box. If you are going to run any length at and depending on how many channels you need I would think about using Shielded cat6 cable to run 4 channels down one cable and use the inexpensive adapters from Amazon that have 4 XLRs. They have tails and box versions. You could put RJ45 jacks in the wall and run the cat6 to boxes in your space with tails on the mixer end. When I have some downtime I'll post the adapters so you can see how it works. Makes for a very flexible setup. Those Mono price snakes have gone up exponentially in price since I did this video, and the cat6 boxes and tails are probably almost cheaper than building that snake box with the 4channel snakes and it's easy to make any length you need by just snapping a different length cable on the adapters
