  • Carbon fiber is made from organic polymers, which consist of long strings of molecules held together by carbon atoms. Most carbon fibers (about 90%) are made from the polyacrylonitrile (PAN) process. A small amount (about 10%) are manufactured from rayon or the petroleum pitch process.
In response to the recent Titan sub disaster :
The exact cause of the Titan sub disaster has not yet been determined, but there are a few possible explanations.
    • The immense pressure of the water at that depth would have caused the hull to implode.
    • Carbon fiber is a strong and lightweight material. However, it can be susceptible to delamination, a process in which the layers of the material separate. If delamination occurs in a submersible, it could weaken the structure and make it more susceptible to an implosion.
    • Graham-Jones, said
The Titan’s 5-inch thick hull had been subjected to repeated stress over the course of about two dozen previous dives, Each trip would put tiny cracks in the structure. This might be small and undetectable to start but would soon become critical and produce rapid and uncontrollable growth.
    • James Cameron, said
There are several possible reasons for the submersible’s destruction, but the most likely is a failure of the composite hull
Carbon fiber was not the appropriate material for the Titan’s exterior.
    • The Titan disaster will be remembered as a symbol of the fragility of life and the importance of safety and a reminder that the ocean is a dangerous place and some times even the most technologically advanced submersibles are not immune to disaster.

Karthi, I keep getting questions about carbon fiber and wanted to show people who it is manufactured; can I kindly share some of your content without doing narration? Your version, explanation is pretty well done. I await your reply, thank you.

Very nice video. Please tell us how aircraft parts made with carbon fiber prove stronger than metal alloys. Why doesn't the varying air pressure over wings cause an equivalent of metal fatigue? Many thanks in advance. Please keep up the good work. There are very few videos like yours.
