Fantastic video. I learned a few things that I will try with some of my MW images. I was out in Joshua Tree National Park a week ago and have a tracked sky with a blue hour foreground I've already blended, but I'm going to go back and do it again the way you did it and compare the two. Awesome info!

I write from Brazil. The technique of stretching the VL with curves is interesting. I realize that few still use this technique, which comes from editing deep space astrophotography. I would like to see more tutorials addressing this. Hug.

Hi Walt - new here....great tutorial....I found you while trying to refresh my memory of how to photograph the Milky Way on a star tracker....while in the field....never good to start then, but I'm so glad I found you - so easy to follow and my images turned out decent. Now I'm in the processing stage and I have a question.....I shot my images on a star tracker, settings were 180", F8, ISO 800, 25 images (and I forgot the dark one so I'm stacking without that), got through the stacking part in Starry Landscape stacker and I'm on to the PS edits.....I'm using the free version of StarXterminator and it is not removing all of the stars......I've applied it multiple times and I still have stars.....any tips? I tried using it with and without the large tile overlap.....still have stars.....would appreciate your advice on this. Thank you so much!
Wow, super cool video. I just bought a tracker and can’t wait to try it out. I was wondering though what is the advantage of taking multiple tracked shots vs just taking a bunch of untracked shots and using Sequator ? Also when taking dark images with the lens cap on do they have to be the shutter speed as the other shots? Thanks keep up the good work!
Hi there! So the biggest advantage of tracked shots vs untracked is that you can lower your ISO and close your aperture a bit. With a lower ISO you will get higher dynamic range with more color and detail. And you can set your aperture to something like f/4 and get sharper stars. Plus it's just amazing to see the details in a three minute exposure. I guess the other huge advantage is you can use longer focal lengths as well.
Oh and yeah your darks have to exactly the same as your lights and they need to be the same temperature, so take them your lights.
Just on exposure times. With my lense/camera combo, optimal time for no trailing is around 5.93 seconds. (35mm f.2.8 on APS-C). This seems, short. Can I get around this, simply by stacking more and more shots? Is there a minimum amount of exposure time where it's just not worth it?

I don't have to use Ctrl+Alt=Shift+E unless I'm using layer masks. When using masks it's necessary. I just use that method every time so I don't have to think about it.

Hi! I think the focal length is good but if you aren't using a star tracker, I think f/4 might be a little slow. I'm not saying don't try. Please do! At 10mm you might be about to pull off a 30 second exposure. But you will be better if with f/2.8 or lower. Just try with what you have. You might be surprised!
Walt, in the case of dark frames, should the files have the same editing settings processed in light frames? I know the capture settings must be the same. But in editing? Thanks.

Hey Walt... Since we are both in the south, what do you do to keep your equipment from looking like you just pulled it out from a lake, 30 seconds after you walk outside? If i set up and leave my equipment outside for like an hour, will it no longer be covered in water?
There is a velcro heated "belt" you can buy to keep your lens warm to prevent condensation. Or I did a bush fix by literally duck-taping hand warmers around the outside of the lens. Believe it or not, it worked!
@@gfellerm yeah, i have a dew strap, so im not worried about the lense, im more worried about water getting into the electronics. The south sucks....as far as humidity.

Siril has "background extraction" and "remove green noise" and it's totally free!
