Japanese food - we all love it but it can be hard to make healthy choices so I challenged myself to eat only - healthy - Japanese food for a weekend! I'm showing you 4 recipes and 2 restaurants that serve healthy, traditional Japanese food. What was your favorite dish that I ate? Do you have any recommendations for me?

I appreciate how in Japan you can buy cheap fish and consume it on a regular basis. I miss this in my Western diet. You should make more cooking videos, it's both cute and encouraging to other amateur chefs out there (like myself). :D
ive been living in japan for a year. i never ate any of the foods that you typically see in restaurants that are unhealthy. but i was eating the "healthy japanese diet" steamed rice, the salads and proteins. i gained 10lb LOL avoid the sticky rice (its not good for you and its way to glutenous for keeping weight down) also a lot of the side dishes actually still have a lot of sugar and salt in them which is another hidden calorie that will put on the pounds regardless it being a vegetable, like the kombocha, pickled foods etc. even the fish is salt marinated or miso jelly. basically it has healthy items in it that are good for you, and in old fashion terms fat was consider healthy because it has a lot of nutrients in. but if you want to stay slim, just boil broccoli plain and boil chicken. just boil things lol!
The quality of your content is always getting better and better! I really enjoyed this video; thanks so much for sharing!
I would love love love a second edition of this with new tips and shortcuts or advice you've learnt from having more experience doing this,
Being born in Japan, I am used to eating natto, but I usually add something else such as chopped green onions, daikon oroshi (sieved daikon), higiki, etc. to make natto more palatable. Experiment and you might get used to eating one of the most healthy foods.
おいしいきんぴらごぼう出来たんやね よかったね proud of yourself. and i'm proud of you.
100% Kinpira kobo! Loked so yummy
I really enjoyed this video, would love to see more and your recommendations for recipes 😁
I’m so glad I stumbled on your channel. I’m loving the content. Thanks for sharing your experiences, Sam.
The Strawberry sandwich looks like a Shortcake.
Maybe the stores wrap the fruit sandwiches in cling wrap before cutting it? 🤔 Awesome video!
Wonderful video, Sam! It was an enjoyable new twist on your videos to see you preparing some recipes at home. Also, it's a real testimony to Japan that you were able to hang out with friends without a mask! Finally, I thought your (somewhat uncooperative...) outfit was very cute. Keep up the great work with your channel!
In restaurants and cafes you can take off the mask at your seat but otherwise it should be worn :)
Sam, it is great that you got sponsored by Bokksu! I really like seeing cooking at home in Japan videos because it is so easy to go out. Danke!
ive become interested to visit japan and ive been watching like half of your videos by now, i have 2 friends in Chiba, japan .. but ... is there a chance u could meet your followers for a dinner or a gathering so we could be comfortable and understand more about their culture, u did a great job in ur videos , really helped a lot. it made me a little aware of how to live there or at least what its like to be there. very informative vids. please upload more !
Your video quality keeps getting better and better. You also have a very natural presentation style. Shows on food a great, have you ever considered doing a cooking show??
I’m way too bad at cooking and my kitchen is tiny 😅 but thanks!
Thanks for the Obon de Gohan recommendation! I was wondering what to eat one time when I was right at that spot in Ueno, I would've totally had gone there if I had known. The nabe is also a great easy recipe for more veggies in a diet, definitely going to try that!
Hey Sam, don’t stress about the plates, ur meal actually looked amazing and yummy🌸🤗
Lol I’m just like you when it comes to not liking to cook more than dish per meal xD
Nice challenge despite the difficulty to eat traditionally healthy Japanese food!
Thanks for watching guys!

And let me know what your favorite “healthy” Japanese dish is!
HAKUSAI which is used for NABE (hot pot), you don't need to cut and remove the bottom part of.
Thats too pity to waste the veggie! Zu gut, um es wegzuschmeißen...)
You can peel the leafs like banana and only cut and remove the 2cm at the bottom.
You can add Kimchi too, if you like spicy food.
3:21 Yes! I was just thinking about that! All the times I ordered unsweetened matcha lattes.. And they sweeten the matcha powder... Eeeew! I don't mind consuming sugar/salt/... Just don't sneak it in the ingredients. I prefer to adjust my own levels. Might need to try natto.
Me too! Starbucks is actually more sweet in Japan than in the US. They have all these cool seasonal drinks and they all are loaded with sugar.
I think GOBO is burdock root in english. might be wrong
Hey Sam good video very interesting
If you go to Tofu Restaurant, you can avoid fatty, sugary food.
I LOVE moyashi 😍 Also, I think I met Mika the other day - small world 😂 Thank you for sharing this, I just moved to Tokyo last month and was trying to find some healthy and affordable meal ideas!!! ❤️
I wonder why it is so hard to find healthy food if you eat outside :/ I struggle too. I suggest “Otoya” if your don’t know already. It’s a chain with (some lol) healthy foods such as soba or chicken and salad
That fruity whip cream/yoghurt sandwich looks like it would be worth a try. I didn't even know that was a thing anywhere in the world. I've also tried natto before, it tasted disgusting to me.
That box looks so fancy! I actually bought Tom six months of a Japanese snack/candy box. We've had two boxes so far and he's loving it. The matcha/tiramisu Kitkat blew his mind hahaha
If I’ll ever make it to Europe again I’ll bring snacks!
@@SamInTokyoo Yessssssss
I equally love both healthy and unhealthy Japanese food.
Natto is so delicious. I love eating it.
I really liked the first meal you made with the salmon! It looked really delicious. Also, I'm like 99% sure I remember that restaurant you went to with your friend from one of Jenn's videos.
I have a trick for eating natto quickly and cleanly. If you'd like I can show you on instagram.
Dang didnt realize fruit sando is totally just cake hahahaha
Gobo is burdock.
Hmm, did you try the chain Yayoiken? I always went there for a healthy Teishoku and it's not expensive at all.
Yeah I really like it too!
It's great for you to eat natto. natto is so healthy .
Shout out to justonecookbook or cooking with dog for more healthy Japanese food options!
Natto -- it's like the Pork 'n' Beans of Japan... but not really :)
I'm sure someone already said this, but the way they get the sandwiches so neat is to wrap them REALLY tightly in plastic wrap, THEN cut them.
I've seen it on a few of those calming Japanese channels (such as Fumi and Nami's life).
I've always wanted to make it, I think I'll try either non-dairy cream (like oat cream) or greek yoghurt.
The natto breakfast is nicer if you use more rice and add a raw egg to blend with the rest. Less stringy and easier to eat as well as more delicious protein.
Thanks for pointing out how unhealthy mainstream Japanese food is, as well as how picky and inconvenient to prepare.
I unfortunately reaaaally hate eggs haha 😅
@@SamInTokyoo How unfortunate as Japan probably has the best quality eggs anywhere. There's no hesitation necessary in eating them raw as there is elsewhere.
You are like a Macha-wizard :o
🧙🪄
Never tried anything here 🤣🤣
Hey Sam Your Swedish Friend with that bob haircut looks a bit like she could be Japanese
Only one week? It should be forever. And it doesn't need to be Japanese food. Just healthy food.
That’d be a long video
Steaming your veggies leaves in more nutrition.
Hey
That's why you crack a raw egg and mix it with the natto.
I hate eggs 😂
@@SamInTokyoo 😱
@@SamInTokyoo Mix in avocado, mayonnaise & canned fish then?
Heirate mich Sam 😍🤩😘
i dont think i've ever seen salmon that cheap in l.a.
No japanese stirs up natto and rice in a bowl. Please stir up natto only.
Kinpira-gobou that you made looked perfect.
You needed a miso-soup then it wold be a perfect japanese breakfast 40 years ago.
You eat more japanese foods than me.
I’ve seen some Japanese comments here arguing about mixing natto with rice, some do it! 😆
@@SamInTokyoo If you are ok, it will be ok. But I have never seen ppl eating a natoo and rice bowl like that around me.
My mom would have me put a raw egg in with hers.
That’s too metal for me 😂
Are your thumb fingers allergic ???? Hope you feel well.
I’m sorry nato looks gross.
