I do this for a living. Instead of pealing the sticker off the backing paper, do it the other way. Keep the sticker/app tape flat, and peel the backing paper back. Also, peeling it only a small amount first and folding the backing paper, like a couple of inches, you can get better placement, stick down what is exposed, and peel an inch or so at a time, getting all the air out.
Also, if its a large sticker, on pretty much anything (not painted walls, paper or wood, but glass, metal, plastic, foamex etc) you can spray a small amount of water mixed with a minute amount of washing up soap, it helped the air escape and gives a clear finish on the glue.

Absolutely agree with this. It's also a good idea to align the whole decal and tape it in place with masking tape down the centre, BEFORE peeling back the backing paper.
Once taped in place, you can lift the left or right side of the whole decal up and in towards the centre line, peel off that half of the backing paper and either fold it back flat or trim it off with scissors, before applying that half of the decal to the object. Once the first half is on, simply remove the centre tape, peel back the other half of the backing paper and fit the second half of the decal. This will ensure that the decal is always fitted in the correct place as it's a nightmare trying to align a sticky backed decal to an object without it accidentally touching (and sticking to) the object.

I have a question on the transfer tape. Which kind do u use and is there any that you would recommend for someone starting out. I went with your suggestion on a video before of the light brown lining paper from Walmart but it's hard sometimes to get your stencil straight and apply to other surfaces. Any suggestions on a budget?

    • @TheDailyDIYer

I am answered the transfer tape in next weeks Quick Tip Video :) The contact paper stencils are most inexpensive, but you do take on the issue of not being able to use transfer tape with those. Try oracal 631 - it's not that expensive (you do have to order it) but you can use transfer tape with it for easier application.
