To all the people saying God decides when we die, here's a challenge for you. The next time you get sick, don't go to a doctor, don't take any medication, and don't seek any kind of treatment. After all, what if God's plan is for the sickness to end you? What if you go against that plan by seeking a cure?

@@bms77 I think people believe in God because it's comforting to think that there is someone who is greater than all the suffering in this world. Someone who is in control and who is always on your side regardless of how many times you mess up. Someone who will always love you when you have no-one else. I'm eighteen and I've been a Christian all my life. I don't necessarily agree with many of the things the church does, or with some of the beliefs that they spread in society, but I don't judge my God based on what his followers do or preach. He's bigger than all of us, more merciful, more accepting, more forgiving and most importantly, more loving. I know there is no physical proof of His existence but trusting that He is there is the only reason that I manage to get out of bed in the morning. I'm not saying everyone has to believe in God. Following any religion, or not following one, is a choice that every one should be able to make for themselves. The only thing that really matters is that all human beings learn to love and respect one another, because if they did most of the problems in this world wouldn't exist.

It should be made legal in every country north east west and south to choose to do this, not everyone will choose this way but from what I've seen of the one in Belgium there isn't always room for more than very close family and then there would be airfares and accommodation. Let them us everyone do it at home xx

We would never allow our pets to suffer like this, why should humans have to suffer when terminally ill?
We do that to our beloved pets by putting them to sleep instead of watching them suffer. Why can't we extend that kindness to to our fellow human beings especially when it has to be patient that makes such a decision.

Stage 4 Giloblastoma is the most deadly form of Brain Tumor. It is fatal ! My friends husband had Stage 4 Giloblastoma and he suffered so much. His Quality of life was very bad. All the treatments he received made him so sick and he ended up in a wheelchair. He suffered right up till the end. Poor guy. His wife and family had to watch him suffer for 8 months. I Respect Brittany Maynard's right to die with dignity without suffering and having her family watch her suffer. She will die anyway why not have her die peacefully and with dignity. May god bless you Brittany Maynard and lift you up to heaven. Don't listen to all the haters it's your right.

my husband just recently lost his life to this brain cancer. No one can ever know what she and her family are going through or what my family went through. What one goes through with this type of cancer. the suffering they are dealt is beyond words it is not a normal way of death it is a horrible death. she looks great right now, but trust me it will all change in time. it is okay for her to enjoy her life right now. once she is in her last days it is not easy. She is brave in my heart. and until you have walked in the shoes of someone with Glioblastoma you are no one to judge. My husband fought for 2 1/2 years but suffered all along the way and in the end God did call him home.
So terribly sorry Lisa. This is such a horrible disease that takes so many lives and so many from others. I swear theres a cure for it, but its all about money in the treatment in this selfish world we live in. I hope your husbands with GOD and waiting for u to reunite with him some day. Again, so sorry.

Your right dear,let's all leave the judging for God because we are not the patients or the victims. People who judge people who are in this situation,think the way they do because of the info they have been fed, have they ever paused to think that what they think they know may not be like that and if they are going by what they believe to be wrong in God's eyes,God also said, do not have sex outside of marriage,l don't see them keeping that law either.
She's such a beautiful person. I completely understand why she did what she did.
I am a Christian and was always against euthenasia and assisted suicide. Then I spent a year and a half at my sweetheart's side while she slowly deteriorated and ultimately died at age 46 as the doctors called the insurance companies to see what treatment she would be allowed to get and what she wouldn't. What Mrs. Maynard did was as brave as it was selfless. She did not want to suffer in vain, nor did she want her loved ones to see her suffer to ultimately die anyways. Her loved ones are going through a terrible time but will no doubt find closure closer around the bend then they otherwise would have. I am unsure of the biblical doctrines on this matter because the bible never addresses the subject of diagnosed terminal illness. Perhaps that is Gods way of telling us to make that decision for ourselves. Perhaps he is more merciful than those of us who follow him. RIP Brittany Maynard.

I just don't get how some people can call this suicide when the patients are dying already. If your going to die a painful death , it should be your right to take your life in a non painful way and it should not be called suicide but relief dying! I sat with my mom and watched her die of cancer and for the most part i had to go and tell the nurse to give her more pain meds. A lot of the time the nurse would say she just had some and is not due for more for another hr but yet she was on hospice. I got upset with the nurses and they gave it to her . It shouldn't have been that way. So ya if your dying a painful death it should be your right on how and when to go. We put animals down when they are dying and in pain and no one blinks an eye but if a human is suffering like an animal and want to be put down on their terms everyone calls it suicide and says its a disgrace . SAD

You weren't there to comfort her when she cried. You weren't there to pay any of her bills or ease any of her burdens either now or at any other time of her life. In fact, you are, like me, complete strangers, who won't be there now that she is dead, either.
What grotesque arrogance, then to traipse into this woman's life in her final moments and demand suddenly that she go through months of pain and worse to honor your own apparently quite narrow little beliefs.

My mom died with this type of cancer. The pain, suffering and loss of dignity is the most cruel thing to force a human to do. If we are allowed to put an animal we love down with dignity why not a decision for our self !
Some of these doctors who don't agree with this are only looking out for their bank accounts. They don't care how much pain you're in, how bad you suffer. As long as they are getting paid off your illness they want to keep you alive. When you have been given a diagnosis of some terminal illness, it should be your own decision and no one else's choice. Nobody will be able to bear the pain for you. The government needs to stay out of people's personal choices. They have no right to dictate to someone how long they should suffer. Trust me, it's all about money with most of the doctors and big pharmaceutical companies.

When they know every living thing dies, then cancer comes, they want to keep them and see them suffer, better to die when everything is intact, then when some parts are missing.
Most Dr. respect your wishes...assuming you are aware of all of the options. If you choose to die they can provide meds to try to ease some of the suffering at the very end. It's the more religious members of society that forbid anything that doesn't require suffering for as long as possible.

How can the government tell us we can't die? It's our body, our life and some people who are in so much physical, emotional pain have to go through so much to get the ok for a choice that should be theirs. I have no family and I want that right. I don't want to sit in a nursing home helpless being slapped. I had horrible daughters but that would be what theyd do to me too. I have that right. So far in 2 years, I've been raped, had to call 911 and no one came to the hospital accept one that used me all up. I had no visitors. I accepted that. I want to go.. That's not life being tortured by mistreatment or disease.

Until you've actually lived through this with a loved one, or are currently experiencing a terminal illness, you really have no voice as to what is right or wrong. Cancer minimizes your choices. My grandma had cancer. Battled it for 10 years and went out peacefully in her sleep. She said people who end their lives are ignorant and donot know God. She said she would rather suffer in agonizing pain for years than suffer for all eternity. To each their own. My grandma was a strong woman. She was patient.

I find it very cold and callous that people choose to stand by their beliefs and criticize Brirtany, over having compassion for the incredibly difficult situation she finds herself in. I have nothing but compassion for her and the utmost respect. And, I am sending her strength in a time that is incomprehensible to me as I am not in her shoes. My biggest wish for her is to diminish the fear she must feel.
Brittany said that she isn't killing herself, cancer is. I don't remember her exact words, but she said something to that effect. I felt the utmost compassion for Brittany when she talked about wanting to start a family with her husband. She wanted to live, but not with excruciating pain from cancer. She was one courageous woman.

@@jacquelinegraham4036 Glioblastoma Multiforme is a death sentence.....always. In my 28 years as a neurosurgery RN, I have NEVER had a patient survive GBM and it is an excruciating death. I also believe our Father is a loving, understanding Father and would NOT punish one of his children for ending their suffering.
As a person that watched my grandfather die from liver failure and stagger 4 cancer I completely understand where she is coming from. It's devastating watching him transform into someone he never wanted to be. He was an amazing man and to his last days he still demanded a smoke and a beer. What she is doing for her family in the long run is a honorable thing. For her family to have only known her as she really was is not bad.
My Sister died two years ago from a brain tumor. She was not in any pain, nor was she having seizures. She passed away naturally with her family beside her. If this woman is suffering, has no chance of recovery, she should do what she feels is best.

After losing my mother two years ago to a sudden stroke, I honestly would have preferred being able to properly say goodbye. Finding her with a complete loss of brain function and no chance of ever living again was horrific. From experience, it is a choice everyone should have when faced with terminal illness. I am respectful towards others in regards to acknowledging everyone is entitled to an opinion. I cannot respect someone who inappropriately comments about her choice and even more so to those who are quick to say she is committing a sin. Passing judgment is just as much of a sin as anything else. She is a truly brave, beautiful, and inspirational soul. May her beauty continue to inspire and her family be at peace knowing she is not suffering.
Those of you judging her, saying she's selfish... you don't even know how she feels, how her family feels, what they struggle with every minute of every day! It takes an extremely courageous person to make the choice that she's making... and I'm sure she does care about others, if you'd take the time to watch her videos she specifically states that she is scared of what her mom (brittany being her only child) and her husband would do without her. And that she hopes they can move on, she wants her husband to move on and make a family later in life. So selfish? No, not even in the slightest!

As a retired nurse who has worked in both CCU and hospice, I have total support for people with life limiting illness to make choices for their own care within reasonable circumstances able to be treated responsibly. Meaning, those who might be pressured into suicide by relatives for inheritance, etc.
My dear Mom died from this. She suffered terribly! She had a stroke that left her paralyzed on one side and she couldn’t speak. Even before the stroke her speech was garbled. She got huge painful bedsores. She suffered horribly! Too bad that option wasn’t available then.
This was HER life and HER choice period. How can anyone dare pass judgment on a woman who was facing death. Instead of being harshly criticized and judged, her legacy is that of a brave woman, who was able to face the reality of her cancer. She was a strong, brave, intelligent woman. I appreciate this woman’s bringing awareness to this issue. I have been through cancer. I don’t look forward to it again. I would like to have to option to be able to make my choices, if need be.
Debate? Over what? Individual freedom of choice over one's life? She wanted to live. But, she couldn't. Given that, why take every day of suffering to come? I'm so glad Brittany had this release. She was adult, thoughtful, responsible, and made a difficult choice that made sense for her.

Prayers to you and your family !! I have had a lot of loss in my family. Both of my Uncle's past away because of cancer and we seen the pain and suffering. What you are doing is very brave and best for you and your family .. Do not allow haters vile words hurt you none they are cowards and never walked a mile in your shoes to even understand. I think they should broadcast people in their last days in souless ICU. They have our elderly hooked up cause they have insurance screaming for their lives mostly demented and you call that humane. OMG!!!

She is an amazing spirit…and she made a very difficult decision. I can understand the reasons for her choice, and can say I would want to do the same; however I don’t think I am brave enough. We don’t know until we walk it in our own shoes…because no one else’s will ever fit. The really ironic part of this is that she has so much to give to others... everyone around her, and now even those who never had the honor of meeting her. She is truly a beautiful Child of God

Comment : Although this is a truly heartbreaking story, I think it is important to realize that Brittany has the capacity to make her own healthcare decisions. In the medical field, it is determined that the patient has capacity if he/she does the following: First, he/she uses reasoning to make and communicate a choice that is consistent with their values and goals. Second, he/she understands the medical situation and prognosis, the nature of the recommended care, the alternatives including their risks and benefits, and the effects on his/her values. In this case, Brittany understands that she has malignant brain cancer and is only expected to live for six more months. As she mentions in the video, there are not currently any cures for her prognosis, and she is conscious of how her decision to end her life will affect her family. She has reasoned to end her life “on her terms”. Although this decision may not mirror what many people believe she should do, it is consistent with her values. I believe this opportunity should be available to more people who are suffering from terminal illnesses. If they have the capacity to make their own healthcare decisions and they choose to end their life early to avoid pain and suffering, they should be able to do so. In my opinion, a doctor respecting the patients wishes will not only respect their autonomy, but will ultimately act in beneficence by “doing good”. I believe it is inhumane to extend the life of a terminally ill patient who is living a miserable quality of life and being held on life support against their will. Moreover, I would like to emphasize the fact that Brittany made this decision while she had capacity. It is important to recognize this and talk to newly-diagnosed terminally ill patients about their wishes while they have the capacity to make these decisions. This will respect the autonomy of the patient and help physicians define the grey lines of beneficence vs. maleficence in such situations. With that being said, suicidal patients are considered not to have the capacity to make their own healthcare decisions. A thorough psychological evaluation would need to be made for each case to understand the nature and course of the patient’s thought process before any decisions are made. With that, I still believe terminally ill patients with capacity should have the option to end their life on their own terms.
what in anyones right mind thinks she is selfish or that she cant think cuz her tumor, youre dead wrong and you make me sick to my stomach. i watched my grandfather and father slowly dying from cancer and other terminal illness. I would have rather them do it themselves than suffering everyday and going through the worse of the worst. you people who believe shes wrong for making a choice for herself, are idiots. this story makes me cry and i only wish my dad could have done that. knowing would be way better than finding out from someone telling you and not being able to say goodbye. this woman is a hero for people who dont get that chance, fight the power girl! you deserve it.
Of course the majority of medical professionals oppose assisted suicide. By keeping someone alive, you can preserve the cash flow with doctor visits, procedures, tests, surgeries, etc.
It costs a considerable amount of money to pay for the drugs to end ones life.

When a Health System earns money through the continued (and profitable) existance of a serious/terminal patient, it seems worrying that an individual's decision is discarded.
If you can't decide your own existance, what can you decise?
I have nothing but respect for Brittany. No matter how many times people call this practice "cowardly," I will never believe it takes less than self assurance to commit to something so firghteningly oblivious. At the same time, having watched patients and family/friends die of illness, there is an eternal legacy that lies with someone who fought until the end, no matter how ugly or brutal. I have more respect for someone who dies in the midst of battle than someone who quits in the corner.
This interview was very powerful and I sincerely hope it helps clear up some of the misconceptions about physician's aid in dying. If this practice is used correctly (only in terminal cases), I feel that it could help a lot of people. And in some ways, it would help the family. I realize how delicate this subject is. However, if someone were to be in constant excruciating pain and be accompanied with many various health concerns dealing with terminal cancer, the option to have a physician help with their death would cross their mind. These cases are not about suicide -- they do not 'want' to die. These people do not want to be in terrible for the pain of the small remainder of their life. I feel that the right to die in terminal cases should be a human right. The people who decide to do this have put a lot of thought into their decision. They do not wake up one morning and just decide this. And as mentioned in the video, only about half of the people who have the prescription take it. The drug is used as comfort in a way. The patient knows that if the pain becomes too unbearable, they are able to pass in a peaceful and painless way and have the people they love by their side.

She doesn’t WANT to die. But she’s going to. I support this decision. I’ve seen others who do this for the wrong reasons. One..I can’t find now...a young woman who was simply extremely depressed. She was NOT seriously ill.
If anything, she sounds completely selfless and brave to me. She wants to take control of her destiny and not let this disease ravage her more than it already has. She wants people to be able to make that choice as well if they are terminally ill. The only selfish thing here is people telling her how she should live and die. I respect her for that.
Just an amazing story and so eye opening. We tend to focus on so many things in our life that have very little meaning overall and fail to focus on the fact that this will all end someday. I had forgotten about this story but it was in my CZcams feed today and I watched it again with tears streaming down my face. I believe that Brittany Maynard's life was meant to change others lives and I hope she is somewhere in heaven souring in spirit and without the horrible tortures she felt on this earth.
My first cousin died of brain cancer and she would have been better off if she had done this.
It is a very personal choice. A choice that should be given to those who choose to use it. I think many have lost sight of the bigger picture here. She does not want to die, she does not want to suffer, she does not want her family to have to suffer by her side. I pray no one I know or myself will ever have to think about making such a decision....
She's an amazing person......I don't think any healthy person like us can say if she's smart or stupid.....I can NOT judge her..I'm not in her shoes..we ALL want to live..that's human nature, but to be told I have 6 months to live, and will suffer....this is a very hard choice ....
I pray to God she and her family don't read all these comments by so many idiots who lack love and compassion. I'm not even sure I would agree with her choice if it were me, but it's not me, it's her. And it's not for me to judge. Not with something so heavy and so personal. I cannot imagine what it is like to walk in her shoes, and I pray that myself and my family never have to. I pray for Brittany and her family during this time. I really fail to understand why a personal decision that has no effect on other people is debated. If a person is going to die, why would anyone dispute that person's decision to die in a way that saves some suffering?

There is nothing here that is after the fact. Prayer can get you through anything be it sickness or well being. Brittany is going through so much and has made the hardest decision of her life. I just heard of her story 2 days ago . If I were in her place, knowing there was people praying for me would be comforting ! Only God knows, there is always hope. If you actually knew your faith you would know that God is the ONLY being that should be capable of creating and destroying life. I am praying for her to make the right decision and not take her life that God has granted her. I will pray for her to realize that this is NOT the way God intended for her to go. There may be pain and suffering but it will all be worth it if you are faithful and trust that God will help you and be at your side as you battle. For at the end of the rainbow is a beautiful reward of Heaven
She is an intelligent person plus her mom is a lovely mother.
Unless you’re her or in her body who are you to tell her or anyone how to think and or feel. I’m sure if she didn’t have TERMINAL BRAIN CANCER she wouldn’t want this. I have a brain tumor. My third one. I had 2 brain operations. In all I had over 30 surgeries. I haven’t got to that point. I’m also not terminal. Let people do how they feel.

I would choose 'Death by Dignity'.
When I was 8 years of age my great grandmother decided that she no longer wanted to suffer after having suffered from 2 heart attacks and 2 strokes at the age of 88. She could no longer speak nor move adequately so she signed a consent stating that she no longer wanted to be fed or hydrated. A few days afterward my mother and I visited the nursing home she was staying at, and I was the first to enter the room. When I entered the room I saw my great grandmother lying on her bed with her back hunched in the air, her gown was off exposing her breasts, and her tongue was hanging out of her mouth. She was severely dehydrated as her tongue was completely white with no moisture. She later tore up the consent because she was suffering to death and could no longer handle it. Approximately a month after that she died at home. This is because in the state of Wisconsin Death With Dignity against the law.
Who has the right to tell us that we can't end our lives peacefully with our family by our side, as opposed to suffering and leaving your family with the pain of the aftermath? Just because you believe in an imaginary man in the sky who supposedly isn't cool with it doesn't give you the right to infringe on the rights of others who are choosing this method of death for themselves. Keep your religion out of my government, or leave this country. There are plenty of us who don't want you here infringing on our rights with make believe flying spaghetti monsters and child-like frames of thought. It's none of your business. If you choose to suffer until you take your last breath go ahead. I could care less how you choose to die because it's YOUR life, NOT MINE.
It is a crime against humanity to deem Death With Dignity illegal. This is the United States of America, a country that was founded upon the beliefs of freedom. Unfortunately, we're far from it. Separation of church and state clearly doesn't exist here. I'm tired of religious bigots threatening our quality of life and imprisoning wonderful human beings like Jack Kevorkian for providing dignifying care to the terminally ill. It makes me sick to my stomach.

Honestly my only hesitation about this is the number of people who will abuse it, not the dying in particular but the relatives. Impatient relatives pressuring or threatening old people into it so they can get their inheritance. Cheating abusive partners pushing their spouses so they can move on to their younger mistresses. And so on. The possibilities are endless.

As I nurse, it hurts to see patients suffer. And sometimes because the families are too selfish to let go. It's painful and dreadful, any one in a condition similar will just end it.

My heart and love goes out to Brittany, her family and friends. This hits way too close to home for me. Whenever I am laughing and playing with my 2 yr old grandson, it's easy to pretend nothing is wrong. But at 9 weeks he was diagnosed with the exact same brain cancer as Brittany. He's gone thru two brain surgeries, lots of chemo and radiation. The last six months of his life he has gone treatment free. But reality is no one lives from this and my precious grandson won't be with us long most likely. I applaud Brittany for her strength. All my love to you.
