  • How big and how deep should you make your Koi pond. How deep is just too deep. Can you keep Koi in a smaller pond. Should you go deeper or shallow.
I also discus plans for 2023 CZcams.

And don't forget the bigger the pond the more expensive it is to build and run. Bigger higher capacity pumps will be needed which will consume more electricity and any pond treatments (anti parasite etc) will be more expensive as they are based on the volume of water. A pond of 10,000 Litres or less should be considered if costs are an issue to you, but even at this size you can keep good quality koi.

Definitely some good points regarding surface area. My outdoor pond is 15 ft x 10 ft x 5.5 ft deep and my indoor overwintering pond is 10 ft x 8 ft x 4 ft deep. Both ponds are well filtered and have a constant supply of aeration to ensure the koi always have excellent oxygen levels. Looking forward to your next 200 -videos. Cheers.

Some great information here @LeeCalladine. Particularly about surface area. Surface area is arguably one of the most important factors in pond design and you made the point particularly well with the example of an extremely long pond.

Surface area is far more important than depth for sure 👍

Another great informative video . I'm happy with my current pond and filter systems I've not had any issues with maintenance or freezing temperatures as I put similar polystyrene sheets between DPM layers all around the hole before the layer of sand and another DPM then Firestone rubber liner on top . And polystyrene covers that protect surface from frost . No heaters or uvs as pond is protected overhead and on 3 sides from predators and adverse weather conditions . All my fish are growing well and are always hungry 😊

@@leecalladine I've monitored the water quality and temperature quite closely during the cold weather I do have emergency heaters but never needed them as all the insulation and the kiln dried sand I used between liners and the 100ml cellotex I made my covers out of have kept the water temperature above 12degrees . So far . I'm so glad I did it all before the rise in cost of materials . energy etc

@@michealadderley9081 thats amazing.the insulation must be very effective. we have had our heater running for weeks. the temp is only set low but the more insulation the better.

Also the bigger the pond the more volume of any treatments you may need to use, and treatments are costly.
