Harley-Davidson Softail Standard Review, 2021 107, is this the best value for money Harley!? A2 Bike

  • In this video I tell you everything you need to know about the 2021 Harley Davidson softail standard, how does it ride, how good are the brakes, is it good value for money?
This Harley really is a fantastic motorcycle and I don’t have many complaints about it, I talk about all the torque this bike has to offer and how that makes the ride feel. Harleys aren’t about lots of power but this still has plenty of it, although now it’s restricted it’s not got so much…
This bike is my own personal bike that I have just purchased, I talk about what it’s like to ride a big A2 Restricted Harley and if it’s worth doing if you are thinking about getting it done!
I also talk about upcoming customisation I plan like a new set of exhaust pipes and a rear pillion pad.

A wise man once told me, "bhp is all about how fast you hit a wall, torque is all about how much of the wall you take with you". I just bought a Lowrider S, waiting for forward controls from HD, I'm not tall but old, the legs don't bend so well. Keep getting the smiles per mile.

@Leon Wilcox I drove trucks for 35 years, in that time the engines got bigger and bigger. 240 bhp for a series B ERF in early 1980s 32 tonnes, max weight then a few years later 38 t then 42t now 44t to 530bhp when I retired last year, not the biggest engines to be found in trucks just ordinary workhorses which many haulage companies chose, all of them had mind blowing acceleration if no trailer attached, The problem wasn't low bhp it was speed limiters, 62mph mid 80s 56 mph later and now many hauliers limit to 54mph to save fuel. Plenty of bhp but too much load and legislation is the real problem

My 2003 softail standard twin cam has about the same hp number as your 2021 detuned bike! It’s plenty. Mine arrived with Vance and Hines straight pipes that were too loud. I put the stockers back on for that HD sound. It’s a low rumble that shakes the ground without blowing out my ears. Perfect!

I think many people will wake up to what a great motorcycle this really is (thanks to these videos). This has to be, as you point out, the Harley that provides the most value for money. Love the wheels with chrome spokes. Black and chrome just look right. A timeless machine. Already a classic. And that powerful V-Twin engine!! - Looking forward to the next Harley-Davidson Softail episodes. Excellent bike choice in my view.

Torque is power, it is what HP is derived from; Torque * RPM/5151 = HP. The key is that most people aren't riding around at 8,000 RPM, so a Harley at 2500 RPM is producing more HP at that RPM than the vast majority of Bikes on the road. Max HP is a marketing scam. It is only reaches at one point in the rev range that is almost never achieved. Torque is the gift that keeps giving

Nice simple video. No frills. No sales pitch. Just an honest review. I'm looking at returning to bikes after 26 years.Passed my test back in the 80's and spent 6 years as an instructor in the 90's.Stopped riding when I met the Mrs,so miss being on a bike.Had the big sports bikes and sports tourers CBR1000,ZX10,Z1000MK2.Also had a GS850 Rat bike and a GS550 Rat bike .Plus the usual GSX250R , GSX250, GP100 small cc stuff. Always wanted a Harley so I have been looking at the 2022 version with the MAG wheels and one with a Custom Paint job .After watching this I am convinced this is the bike I need. Also nice to see a bike being reviewed in my local area rather than on the big open roads of the USA. Thought it might be a bit big for the Leicestershire/Rutland roads.Just need to persuade the Mrs to let me have one. Wish me luck.

I’ve had my Street Bob for just over three years now & I still love it. In more than forty years of riding it’s the bike that still puts the biggest grin on my face (though the 50cc Honda Cub I bought in 1980 runs it a close 2nd; seriously).
Got to agree with you on the marketing of your bike: should definitely have been named the ‘Street Bob Classic’, for that’s exactly what it is: a 107 SB with the classic black ‘n’ chrome look.

Understand the history of this model. In the mid 2000’s the standard was the entry level Softail in Harley’s lineup. You could upgrade to the Custom which gave you a black engine with polished cooling fin ends and a lot more chrome (I owned a 2008 model). There was no Fat Bob back then so, in the States there is some logic to the name “Standard”.

I have the same 107 standard. I got the saddlemen seat because as you find when yours is unrestricted , it has some serious kick and if you get on it in the wind with the little seat you better hold on tight. With the saddlemen it does it for you. It doesnt make the bike look to big in my opinion. I just think it needed a slighty bigger tire on the back from the factory.

Good to see a lad your age into Harleys , makes a change , they get under your skin, I would still like to own a Harley again one day , I do like that softtail standard of yours apart from the front brake , single disc is not enough on a bike that heavy IMO . Chrome vs black crackle finish. Well, I'm a fan of both but in the right place. On a bike like this I'd want chrome. Black crackle, when properly applied, is arguably more durable so better suited to Adventure and dirt bikes and commuters being ridden year round in all weathers IMO.
On the licensing front, having passed the bike test almost 40 years ago, I was totally out of out of touch with the latest regs so read up on them and what a load of tosh! No doubt some desk bound bureaucrat thinks it makes motorcycling safer.

I have ridden one of these and Harley have taken an entirely different approach to the sports- cafe racer. Most riders change the pipes(Vance and Hines)seat with padding, Z bars/ Risers, add saddle bags, better breathing air filter. For now it’s a very good choice for a novice in that it doesn’t encourage you to speed - just enjoy the ride. Later on you could add a stage 3 performance kit and go through life enjoying 1 road bike. Have a 4 -500 trail bike for off road adventure riding. A basic car like a small station wagon/estate car is handy- before the trail bike.

Great real world test as always. Harley Davidson nice looking and torque over HP everytime. A single disc on a 300kg bike is not a safety feature. Shame Harley's are stupid expensive. Yesterday's technology and tomorrow's prices. Best part of twice the price of a Triumph and definitely not twice the bike.

I'm with you on the Saddleman seats, they're really ugly looking. They don't blend with the lines at all. As for the torque vs HP thing just remember that power=force X velocity, or HP=torque X RPM. It's the force, the torque on a bike that gets you going. Yes when a Fireblade or something gets into high RPM then it creates more power but HD with a lot of low and midrange torque makes more power at normal riding RPM. They may not be fast in terms of top speed but that doesn't mean they don't accelerate quickly.

Mini apes are perfect, put your arms and hands in a comfortable position. Changing gear is easy and the pegs and nice and roomy you can also adjust the position of the shifter peg.

I had a 883 sportster that was black and I chromed it out, went with a different direction with my new bike. I really like the minimalist style, the chrome, the PRICE, just a no nonsense bike with gobs more power than my 883! Probably fits my style more than the street bob.
Btw, I always wanted to visit Wales. Supposedly, my grandfather Reynolds parents or grandparents were from Wales? That’s what they tell me anyway? Of course with the surname Clark, it’s pretty safe to say most of my ancestry can be traced back to somewhere in GB.
