    This 1970s Charles Cahill and Associates film discusses safe driving for motorcyclists, and it features shots of a number of different bikes riding on freeways, dirt roads, and along residential streets, as well as footage of crash tests conducted by the UCLA’s Institute of Transportation and Traffic Engineering. The film opens with shots of people driving cars, motorcycles, and trucks on Southern California’s freeways, highways, and streets. Footage of traffic is spliced with shots of a cemetery. Police officers ride motorcycles down a road. Two men ride what appear to be Honda Scrambler motorcycles on a highway. There are shots of other people riding different motorcycles. A man rides a motorcycle on a freeway next to a large truck (03:12). A group of cyclists, one with a jacket saying “Badgers MC” on it, wait at a stop light. A crash-test dummy on a motorcycle hits the side of a car during crash tests conducted by UCLA’s Institute of Transportation and Traffic Engineering (03:47). A man puts a helmet onto a dummy cyclist and the dummy and bike crash into a car. Slow-motion footage shows the dummy crashing into the car on different sizes of motorcycles. Men and women attend motorcycle safety school (06:07); the driving students put on their helmets and gloves. A student sits on a Yamaha bike (06:48). Other bikes featured in the footage from the driving school include a Suzuki. The students ride their motorcycles through several cones courses. A driver rides his what appears to be another Honda Scrambler on a freeway (07:48). Another driver rides what appears to be a Harley Davidson down a street in a commercial district (08:14). The film shows short clips of various people riding bikes through different kinds of traffic. People ride motorcycles on a dirt path (10:00). Several bikers with “Warriors” shirts ride on a highway (10:22). A cyclist navigates a road rife with potholes. A cyclist cautiously follows a car around a turn that is wet (11:50). A father and his daughter ride one motorcycle while the mother and a son ride another, leaving their Ford truck with a camper (12:25). The film features more shots of people riding motorcycles. Viewers then see the start of a race on a dirt-bike course (11:30); the racers ride through the course, going off jumps and around banked turns

    Great looking CL77 & CL350 Scramblers and I even saw an early CB750-4! The 70's were the heydays of affordable commuter bike everywhere!

    Hoo Boy! I remember riding in a $20 open face helmet and a ski jacket! What were we thinking? I really enjoyed watching this video. Pretty much the same way Reefer Madness is entertaining. 15 minute video with about 30 seconds of actually useful information.

    Still relevant today though; when I used to ride I wasn't Superman I was the invisible man, and mind always "What's the stupidist thing anyone around me can do" and prepared for it. That didn't prepare me for the hit and run driver that didn't notice me turning left ahead of him and totaled my '71 BSA Lightning then squealed tires away from there, I thought it was my fiancee (at the time) behind me. No lasting damage 40 years later other than occasional pain in my right leg under the right weather conditions. Today's riders could learn a lot from us old timers but they are as hard headed as we were at that age. EG Loud pipes suck, running from the cops is stupid (man up and take the ticket if you deserve it, lane splitting is a good way to die, etc etc.)

      Nowadays we know better. You don't need any of that silly stuff.
      Just straight pipes and a 15 degree retarded spark to shoot flames out the pipes and break windows with the noise, while not being able to accelerate at a dangerous rate.

      l wilton LOL Good one! And don’t forget about the mandatory awesome vibration required to maximize the performance, excitement and whole general experience of riding by rattling everything loose on the machine, and man also. It was always a good ride when multiple nuts and bolts came loose, cracked a mirror occasionally, and your whole body was completely numb from the engine vibration and it felt like you just worked out.

    Tip's at Castaic Junction @10:27. Indian Dunes track. Piru. Hwy 126 before they began widening it in the 80s. Brings back memories. Though I started riding in the 70s, I didnt see this film until I took a moto-specific traffic school in 85-86. Didnt seem that old then =)

    Everything that I was taught and that I eventually taught others in the 1960's with the RAC/ACU Motorcycle |Training Scheme. It was run by good natured volunteers and ran for 2 hours every sunday morning for about 13 weeks. That's 26 hours of training and gave us all good grounding in motorcycle safety.
    It's a pity it was stopped in the early 1970's as a result of governments interventions with regards to motorcycle training becoming a professional occupation and that meant that if any organisation was to be payed for such training then it needed to be registered and regulated with the DSA and that costs money. Money that the RAC/ACU didn't have so it closed the doors and it's never been done since.

    I have 36 years of moto experience. The reality of riding a motorcycle is this: "If you get into a traffic accident- IT"S YOUR FAULT! Car drivers are inherently low functioning people and you have to assume that every one of them woke up, today, with an urge to kill you. You must drive in a state of paranoid. If you ride beyond your ability and run off the road or into something, that is your fault, too.

    • @ClayLoomis1958
      @ClayLoomis1958 Před 4 lety +4

      The manual isn't wrong. If you're cruising along on a 600 pound bike and try to turn left by pushing on the right grip, you're going to get high-sided. You lean left and push *GENTLY* on the left grip to start your bike leaning left, then start pushing on the right grip when your weight is balanced for a left hand turn. It's a very subtle movement. You wouldn't notice it if watching someone do it, but that's how it works.
