    It has been said that the generals fight the last war. The US foreign wars provide a good example of this concept. This video looks at how the experience of the previous US foreign war influenced the decisions made in the next one.

      In return, Bremer's strategy was copying the successful de-Nazification process in post-war Germany. It was the de-Baathification of Iraq. Saddam's government and Army were filled with Sunnis who for decades oppressed the majority Shias. Regardless of whether Paul Bremer disbanded the Iraqi Army or not, a sectarian civil war would have broken out regardless. Keeping them on was like keeping the SS on in Germany to keep the orders. It would not have flown with anyone.

    While it is tempting to only use tried and true methods in war it can potentially leave you unprepared for new developments, forcing you to scramble to catch up. Or, even worse, you could lose the war because you were ill-suited to fight it. While it can be very difficult, it is often advantageous to try and predict and adapt for each new conflict before entering it.
    Sometimes in war doing things the old-fashioned way can be useful, but, generally, it pays to be innovative.
    Remember the lessons of the past, but don't let them blind you to the lessons of the present and the future.

    Wow this is why your channel is the best on CZcams, I know you have little time with your other mapping stuff but literally everything you produce is the most measured, unbiased, realpolitk-based content on CZcams, there with two or three other geopolitics/history channels (such as TimeGhost, most of Kings and Generals stuff, Wayback History, maybe a couple others but really not)

    • @maciekGTR
      @maciekGTR Před rokem

      What? this is literally a perfect example of a radically pro-us, anti-left, biased piece of american propaganda. How can you say that, for example, buying into the narrative about "liberating" opressed peoples in the middle east and giving them democracy is a measured, unbiased and a realpolitik-based view? I mean, even if this were to be true, why isn't the US military destroying Arabia like right now to "liberate" Arabs from Saudi dictatorship?
      This video paints the US and their interventions in a very distorted light and doesn't mention even in one word how the Americans absolutely destroyed every single country they invaded and flattened everything. To give an example (via wikipedia which is biased towards the US, so you can't say that i use anti-american sources):
      "A total of 635,000 tons of bombs were dropped on Korea. By comparison, the U.S. dropped 2.1 million tons during all of World War II. North Korea ranks alongside Cambodia (500,000 tons), Laos (2 million tons), and North Vietnam (4 million tons) as among the most heavily-bombed countries in history.
      The truth about US foreign wars is that they were waged with contempt and disregard for humanity, and they only served the financial interests of their elites. This video only serves to distort this view and paint one of the most brutal wars in our recent history as mere interventions that had to be made in order to save opressed people.

    One of the main and big mistakes that the US did when invading Vietnam, was not studying at all everything that the French did wrong in the Indochina war, or at least barely. If they had thoroughly studied the errors and losses the French made, then they could have formulated a better plan and would have had a better chance at winning the war.

    • @sisyphusvasilias3943
      @sisyphusvasilias3943 Před 3 lety +69

      That's the point. USA was just a continuation of French Colonial Occupation. USA always doomed to fail just like the French because the Vietnamese were fighting a war of Liberation/Independence. There was no North/South Vietnam only Vietnam and Communism was never a real reason for USA's invasion (See Pentagon Papers). The Vietnamese has been fighting for Independence for 150 years and were willing to fight to the last soul. USA just wanted another subordinate gov that would let USA dictate it's economic/trade policy.

    • @matthewbadley5063
      @matthewbadley5063 Před 3 lety +34

      Eastory is a little incorrect when he said the Vietnamese were militarily lacking. They had more than just guerillas. They had military backing from the north vietnamese which even included jet fighters. These are the people who beat the French in a pitched battle. They could take on other countries and win at their own game.

      @@sisyphusvasilias3943 how was Communism not a reason for the invasion? The protection of America’s economic interests and opposition to Communism are generally one in the same, aside from America’s relationship with Vietnam since 1991 and with Communist China from 1979-2012

      @@TheLocalLt I'm not sure if this is what the OP meant, but I think the idea's that the North Vietnamese were more nationalist (in the sense that they wanted a united + independent vietnam) than they were communist. They were still motivated in part by communism, but 'remove foreign occupation' was a much better rallying cry for the Vietnamese populace as a whole.
      (That the North Vietnamese were communist or communist-inspired is not in question, just that they placed 'nationalism' above that, kinda like China post-Mao).

      c) Ho Chi Min literally offered USA to make an Independent Vietnam into a US Style Capitalist Democracy during ww2... but USA was always/still is far far more motivated by Economic Imperialism than any political Idealogy... They rejected Ho Chi Min because they would rather have a Socialist Economic Vasal State than an Economically Independent state.
      Communism was always the Propaganda message used to justify its endless wars to its own population because people wouldnt die and pay billions in taxes to a war machine for the real goal of Global Economic Tyranny..... (Hence War on Terror when the Cold War ended.)

    I disagree with your description of the building of the post-Saddam Iraqi Government.. The US backed the Shite majority government instead of installing a government which had equally powerful representation for all Iraqi's.. This led to the Sunni's feeling ostracized and the ensuing insurgency. They may have felt that the previous government, obviously dominated by Sunni's failed, but still, you don't take out one group just to be dominated by another. The US had a chance to establish a balanced and fair government in Iraq in 2003 and failed. This cannot be mistaken
