"Brilliant" plans to win WWII: Soviet plan to win the war in 1942

  • In the autumn of 1941 the Germans had underestimated Red Army's strength and began an offensive that was supposed to deliver a mortal blow to the Soviet Union. This miscalculation resulted in a situation where German troops found themselves in an unfavourable position. This gave the Red Army an opportunity to trap and destroy the German Army group Centre and decide the outcome of the war.

It's easy to criticize Hitler for being "too prideful" to retreat at Stalingrad, but I never knew that he had encountered a similar scenario previously and successfully used the strategy of holding his ground. So many historical events are oversimplified when in reality most choices made by leaders like Hitler are made for a reason beyond just pride.

    • @ImperativeGames
      @ImperativeGames Před 5 lety +297

Basically it was a gamble. Retreat and lose half of forces/equipment/artillery for sure or fight, kill enemies and maybe lose whole army.
Actually, Germany would lose the war either way. They had small chances to win with Blitzkrieg, but it was mostly suicide from the beginning.

As Hitler himself said talking to Mannerheim "I had no idea they had this much equipment, factories the size of villages. Had i known this before."
Only Russia/USSR could come back from such a initial loss of millions of troops and equipment.

    • @ImperativeGames
      @ImperativeGames Před 5 lety +142

German intelligence agencies lied to high military command (and Hitler) about Soviet weapons (modern guns, artillery, T-34 being in early stages of production, etc), size of the army, structure of divisions, loyalty of officers and soldiers (they many times said Red Army will collapse straight away), and the rest, for a long time. They knew everything and shared information only after war started. That's a proven fact.
Because they were agents of Britain probably, maybe bought by USA oligarchy and corporations. That's my speculation, but I don't see another explanation.

Imperative Games *All* of German intelligence? That would be a real masterpiece, especially as Hitler had the habit of promoting top brass who hated each other to equal ranks and keep responsibilities vague to incite rivalries (survival of the most relentless, the ultimate foundation of Nazi ideology).

That adds up to roughly 4,000,000 lost in just six months. Not to mention, most of the Soviet Air Force was destroyed in just a couple of days, handing the skies over to the Luftwaffe. The Russians literally suffered the worst military disaster in history. This is why there are a lot of notions and stereotypes about German and Soviet military capabilities.

For sure it was not as cold as German historian Paul Carell wrote (Festung Demjansk -51°C at January 18th 1942), but still cold enough to build by Soviets railroad on Ladoga Lake in winter 1941/42 or cross on ice 42 km wide Azovsk See in winter 1942/43 by German 40 PanzerCorps. That's facts.
      upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/d7/CaminoDeLaVidaLeningrado.ogv
one Leningrad scientist noted in 1941:
“At [-5 °C], 4 inches [10 cm] of ice would form in 64 hours; at [-10 °C], 4 inches would form in 34 hours, at [-15 °C], 4 inches in 23 hours. A foot of ice [30 cm] would be laid down in 24 days at [-5 °C]. It would take 8 days to create a foot of ice at [-15 °C]”.
      Additionally:
A minimum of 4 inches [10 cm] of ice was necessary to support a horse without cargo.
A minimum of 7 inches [18 cm] of ice was necessary to support a horse-drawn sleigh with one ton of cargo.
A minimum of 8 inches [20 cm] of ice was necessary to support a truck transporting one ton of cargo.
Although only a foot of ice was required to support mass transit along the route, the actual thickness of the ice typically ranged from 3-5 feet [91-152 centimeters], a density thick enough for nearly any task.

I love how you mentioned the logistics with a railroad picture. The fact the Soviet railroad gauge was different hurt the Germans alot more than people tell.
Trains from Germany couldn't directly run on Soviet track because of a size difference, so the Germans commited men and material to rip up the tracks and place new ones

Since the Russian railway guage is wider, they should have begun broadening the guage within German and Polish territory, without being shot at, and building Russian-size locomotives, rather than trying to rebuild the Russian railway where they would be shot at while doing so, and which was never going to catch up with the front in time, or ever. The Russian railway, like the Soviet tanks, worked better with the weather and the less developed infrastructure, because Russian locomotives ran on wood more than coal, and ran less frequent trains, which was safer during the thaw and floods especially. Broad Guage for the win, another piece of Russian cunning that everyone sneered at for being different.

And if the army group "Center" didn't get destroyed, why does the German army got problems there and decided to refill "Hole" in its defence line with units from Southern group of army? They refilled it because they lost a lot of units. So, I think that operation was a huge success.

The problem was that the bomber department was persuaded that the bombs without naval landing could have won the war alone. They were determined to push the government in investing more in the Airforce than in any other part of the British army of navy. Or, that's what had written A. Beavor in his book.

Estonia is a neo-fascist appartheid state. They used to be industrial centers of the Soviet Union yet now Estonians flee their capitalist shithole (wages at 200%/month) and clear my toilet for 20$. They even joined EU/NATO. I hope it gets obliterated.

Actually Britain hoped for American help to end the war quicker but was going it alone with the commonwealth. But you already know that.

Adam de souza No, that was actually their plan. They likely wouldn’t have taken the same position without Churchill’s secret knowledge of eventual US involvement and lend-lease. They couldn’t have survived the likely scenario of German aggression, much less invasion. The blitz/battle of Britain nearly knocked them out by itself.

@@dr.lyleevans6915 the battle of Britain crippled the luftwaffe wtf do you mean, and the blitz was ineffective night bombing after the battle of Britain until the end of the war.
The plans against German invasion were extensive, and the royal navy would destroy any attempt to supply an invasion of the home island's

NoOneCaresM8 {-}7 Germany had nearly wiped out the UK’s Air Force (RAF) by use of air raids and the like; not knowing how close they were to dominating the skies, Germany switched tactics just when they could have knocked England out of the war (for all intents and purposes at least. Even if Churchill didn’t due for peace, his ability to wage an offensive without the US would have been gone, giving Germany the opportunity to use resources for their eastern campaign that would otherwise be tied up defending against a western invasion). Even the BBC’s “World at War” series, which is notoriously biased towards the allies, reaches this conclusion. Although I am a staunch American Patriot, I try very hard to be unbiased when doing historical research; I will defend a truth even if it makes an enemy look good. It is tough to dig through the endless data and discern what information is objective, I try to be patient with others who have been taught mis/un-truths.
As far as the outcome of a German land invasion of England, it’s hard to say what the outcome would have been. So I won’t argue that Germany would have won for sure; I would also hesitate to say that England would certainly prevail. Either position would be wrong.
I also agree with you to a degree on the effectiveness of the Blitz post the Battle of Britain. But I don’t believe Germany’s main goal was to destroy England at that point (which they could have done at Dunkirk); they were trying to get England to surrender / reach an armistice agreement. Germany tried on many occasions both before and during the war to avoid further conflict. This fact is commonly omitted from popular discourse (in order to perpetuate the “most evil man ever” narrative). A. H. never wanted war with Britain, he wanted to ally with them in the fight against Bolshevism/communism.

Yeah, well, of course, the English-speaking audience is always pulled out by the general frost and meat, and not by the Red Army and its people who heroically gave their lives on the battlefield and labored in the rear in rough days ....
