    I feel like at these price points, it just becomes a matter of how rare the plant is, and much less about how good the plant looks. I mean, I get it if you're a professional plantsman who collects specific species, but if you're just a private collector why would you spend a 1000 euro on a plant you can't even look at because it's going to be standing on a foggy inclosure all day?

  • @kimkautz
    @kimkautz Před 3 lety +205

    Unpopular opinion, I think the obliqua looks like a sick adansonaii and I don’t get the hype around them.

    • @blakea.e.1681
      @blakea.e.1681 Před 3 lety +20

      Like with many other things, it's full of hype simply because it's rare and you feel better about yourself/cool for having one. Anyone who likes the look could get something similar for a way better price

    • @ananddorairaj
      @ananddorairaj Před 3 lety +15

      well said. Collectors glorifying the Obliqua are pretentious, to say the least.

    • @brianneclark6944
      @brianneclark6944 Před 3 lety +12

      I agree from a looks perspective and that many who own this plant only purchase it to say they have it. However, I think some of the interest is also around the history and preservation of the plant. It's not always about looks! The obliqua at one point was dangerously rare to the point where it could have gone extinct. So for some collectors who really love plants, I think they may appreciate this background and want to propagate and sell to others to ensure the plant is available going forward for those who like it to enjoy! And that seems to be happening which is great.

    • @ThisIsMyFullName
      @ThisIsMyFullName Před 3 lety +6

      It's not about looks, it's simply about rarity. It's when plants stops being something beautiful to look at, and instead becomes an obsession. It's the same as people who have 500 plants in their private collection and they can't even remember why they bought half of them.

    This is what I do. I have a 4 ft aquarium stocked with dozens of Guppies. All my cuttings and runners are floating on small styrofoam squares on the top of the water.
    Not only are the plants sitting in water they are recieving all the nutrients from the fish waste.
    There is no filter in the tank. Every two weeks I do a water change of 1/2 the tank and also water all my other plants with this water.
    Not only do I have no problems with the toxins in tap water as the water is well aged, I never have to fertilise any of my plants and every cutting very quickly roots up.
    The aquarium is also in my grow room and creates the perfect humidity conditions.

    At least on Etsy, USA sellers still have like one leaf rooted cuttings for almost $2,000. But just about any popular plants that are sold on there are expensive compared to your bigger and well known sellers. Which is something I don’t mind as propagation will take longer when you don’t have hundreds of mother plants.

    I called it! Nobody believed it, but I called it! :D Monstera obliqua is dropping in price and will continue to do so. Soon I can have mine :) I absolutely adore how it never reaches crazy sizes like other monsteras (even adansonii) and stays manageable. That's the appeal for me, not the rarity.

    it's so WEIRD to think about the fact that M. obliqua used to be one of the top tier plant unicorns. it's still really cool! but not what it was "back in the day" as you said.

    For me to spend more than 100 on a plant, it would need to be immortal and have each seperate leaf be a beautiful pastel colour!

  • @allanonnz
    @allanonnz Před 3 lety

    Obliqua is literally anywhere now just wait half
    year or more the price would go down further… but adansonii variegated is different imo especially those with nice variegation like half moon, their price would still hanging on for a while. However really surprised to heard Kaylee saying joepii price will be stronger than obliqua but it’s very true that the form of joepii is not sexy to everyone while many people are obsessed with obliqua’s fenestration

  • @witch_in_a_wheelchair3050

    Albo rots more than aurea because aurea still produces a bit of food from the yellow, albo doesn't so the plant melts off the parasitic parts if it feels like it needs to.

    Hi there! I am a massive fan your content Kaylee, and I love the videos on plant investment. HOWEVER, being in the process of figuring out how to make a living myself off of plants, I am really confused when it comes to the legal aspect of all this here. Therefore, I hope Kaylee or somebody experienced in the community can help me out!? Would be so much appreciated. As far as I understand, many plants on the European market are protected. And I dont mean naturally protected but protected in terms of patented. So, all over Europe it is pretty much illegal to buy a plant and just sell propagations of them, unless you pay license fees to whoever grower owns the rights. Does anybody have any details on that? Are all these plants shown just unprotected or is it different in the UK due to Brexit? I would also be happy to discuss this outside the comment section. Again, I would be beyond grateful for any information in that. Much love, Dan

    hey i just had a question, if i made a trip from abroad to the UK on holiday and bought plants at your shop physically, would you still have phytosanitary documents with them or not? thinking of visiting in a year or so for a conference during summer (i live in the middle east rn and I'm sick of summer heat) and I'm thinking of hitting up your shop while I'm there.
