Yes I'd like to see "plant flipper" stories. Great info! Love the elder man in the video...wondering Kelly's dad 🤔
One warning about PayPal. I bought a plant on mercari (eBay/Etsy type)The seller wanted refund via PayPal instead of the store plat form. I was naive plus overwhelmed with holidays. Stupid of me, I accepted. He processed as good/service which cost me $1.98 transaction fee. Few weeks later, he disputed the refund, claiming he didn't get goods from me. I sent many emails with supporting documents that was "refund, no good involved, therefore no tracking#" to PayPal, tried to speak someone for 6 weeks. After 6 weeks, PayPal said "we decided to go with buyers favor due to no tracking#. We are charging you dispute fee $15 and credit transaction fee $1.98" Principle matters to me a lot, so I have decided to close PayPal account due to poor service, they didn't even read my emails and ignored call-back requests.
Anyway, my 2cents: stick with the same platform for refund/partial refund etc. If Etsy, get refund through Etsy.
I'm embarrassed to tell my bad mistake, but hope someone feels my mistake helpful.

In the US an import permit is not required for under 12 plants BUT, it’s still a good idea to get an import permit so customs knows it’s coming, it can help move the process quicker once it reaches customs. I didn’t know selling privately within the UK actually requires a plant passport 😯 I’ll have to google if it’s the same in my country (in the EU). It’s probably not a prioritised area within the postal services but I guess it’s good to know if anything happens.
And already 1/4 in I decided I’ll not try to buy directly from a grower lol. A lot of hassle with a lot of risks. I understand the prices in plant shops now!

    • @elliebob2306

Selling privately within EU doesn’t require passport, phyto or any other documents. As Long as you are not professionel en legally responsible for the plant and the process nor you earn over a specific amount from it, you are not recuired to register as a company. As a hobby grower and private collector you can happily buy and sell plants without documentation within EU.

Thank you so much @KayleeEllen for making this video. It is definitely very insightful and helps shed more light on what factors are at play when shopping for rare (commercially) plants. I added commercially, as truly rare and endangered species have no place in people’s homes. This is where the poaching aspect comes into view as well. Botanical gardens are of course the major exceptions to this, where they are playing a vital role in conservation efforts and their work is very important. However, what I believe people refer to as rare plants are those which are not readily available from local nurseries or garden centers (with exceptions, of course). Considering the information you have very clearly and concisely provided has given me a much better understanding and appreciation of plant shops. Knowing what to look for when making a purchase also greatly helps. Your B-roll from your green wall and your own shop is great. Thanks again!

You rock! This was really concise and long overdue. I think there might not be Araceae species (aroids) on the CITES list (This may change at any time), I think it is good to note that plants on the list require an additional CITES certificate. All orchids, for example, fall within that category along with other endangered species.
The phyto certification was put in place to limit virusses/bacteria/insects and diseases in general, from traveling between countries. You never know what might affect food crops, for example.
A harmless beetle in Indonesia might be a problem in the US and visa versa.
Very good points, thank you again.

A 69686 dropped all 4 leafs, a few weeks in a prop box and it spit out 2 new leaves. And two growing like I got them down the street. All three orders went from order in Singapore to my care in Flat Rock, NC in 10 days. . My one concern is a constant lack of a rocking root system. As for private persons selling plants inside of the EU and therefore needing documentation like plant passport, I think it depends on how member states interpret the plant health regulation etc. To my knowledge most if not all member states have decided that sales between private persons inside the EU is ok and doesn't require documentation in the form of plant passport.

No excuses 🤷🏼‍♀️ It’s just a matter of being caught I think... @@belovedsummerdays Please see my response to Kaylee Ellen :-) Law is never black and white and even EU regulation will be up to a member state's interpretation of it because in the end all law (also regulations) will be full of holes. I just looked through the EU plant health regulation and to my understanding it applies to professional operators. Art. 2 (9) states that 'professional operators' means any person, governed by public or private law involved professionally in and legally responsible for planting, breeding, producing, growing, maintaining, movement within EU, making available on the market, storage collection etc. I have a hard time believing that hobbyists that sell cuttings a couple times a year can be considered a professional and/or legally responsible for any of those categories unless it's your job.

Love everything in this video! I am a private seller for now and appreciate all of information about risk vs reward at all points during the process. I would love to see a video on the various things that can happen to a plant/cutting during shipment and how to rehab it. Would also love a video on flipping! Basically .. all the videos 😂💚

I'm in Australia 🇦🇺 and we have strict quarantine regulations just between some states depending on where you are and where the plant is coming from. At the moment I'm waiting on some plants I've ordered online to arrive. They are coming from Cairns Queensland a distance of 2572 km away. So it's almost like buying international here the distances they can come from.

My mom bought me an alocasia stingray from a private seller and it declined FAST. I managed to save it but this seller is known for selling plants the day they come into his possession. I didn’t know that at the time. The stingray is alive and thriving after I nearly lost it.

One more "pro" for buying from the grower: they are the ones who will usually have species or cultivars that you cannot find elsewhere, depending on where you live. There is a species I covet, but I only know of it's existence in Sweden and no one there is selling and the plant probably couldn't make the trip anyway. But someday, I may go there and get it.

Interesting! But quite different here in Australia, the quarrantine / controls on biological materials coming into the country (because we don't have a lot of pests / diseases here) make it not an option for private people to buy from overseas. There's some quarratine rules between some states, but where I live I can, with very few exceptions, buy within Australia with no stress or documentation.
