there's a bit more to this to be honest, there is hardly anyone telling people that they are easy. there is a lot of scaremongering though... + probably the toughest genus when it comes to gatekeeping etc. , because they flower so readily, with a little research anyone can cross them, which puts some people off. the last thing they'd want to see is certain clones getting TC'd (which is silly in my opinion, just look at the past few years poaching scandals around papillilaminum & dressleri). my point is that a lot of sought after varieties are tied to actual names, which I don't think will change any time soon.
Anthurium seems like totally well know in comparison to Ficuses. That's a true niche 😂

@@matthewglasgow4085 unfortunately that will not happen, not without TC. In case of anthuriums you might be able to get a hybrid of something prestigious for a "lower" price point, or selfed seedlings etc. The parents are usually some amalgamation of very recessive genes that provide desirable traits, so the chance of you growing something that matches your expectations is pretty low. the other thing about some of them is their actual botanical rarity. See the current craze around the papillilaminum clones currently in the hobby. Since Panama is such an endemic place for wildlife & plants, they look vastly different depending on where they were collected from a good couple of decades ago for the most part ( "ralph lynam", "fort sherman" etc. ) Clones of those original specimens will never drop in price unless they get into tissue culture. I personally hope we will get there at some point, the gatekeeping is REAL though.
I think Variegated Monsteras, Variegated Alocasias and Anthuriums are going to wild this year ✨
I absolutely agree about hybrids. I came to that conclusion at IAS last September. I don’t think it will be limited to this year though. I think hybrids are where the future of the plant world is headed for next several years. I think the plant community will be more cautious in spending a lot of money on plants because I know a lot of people who haven’t had much experience until the plantdemic and have killed costly plants. Also people who spent thousands on a plant have watched prices drop months after spending that kind of money so I think we will have a much more patient plant community with less of a frenzy unless the price is right.
Platyceriums (staghorn ferns) are very big right now. And I agree with you about unusual varieties of easy bushy plants being a hit. There are so many new varieties of Aglaonemas, Sansevierias, and ZZ plants out there that people are snapping up.
Yes to smaller and bushier plants. I too am tired of poles and plants that effectively become furniture because they get so big.

I think a lot of the hybrid anthuriums look to similar, so one or 2 are nice but having a lot of them not. Same with variegation, it becomes a messy blur (and lots look ill). Having different shades of green, some nice veins as contrast, one or 2 variegated plants and different leaf shapes will make a better, more interesting collection. And I think people will want flowers again, not only leaves. I have added nepethes (pitcher plants) to my collection, different shapes, different colors and not something everyone has or wants. Also a combination of tc and seed grown hybrids.
I am so excited! BUT lets up the ante and do a vid on you past year predictions and see how many you’re right. Maybe a contest with Ben who got more predictions right!

I’m personally leaning towards anthuriums and variegated alocasia this year. There’s definitely a surge in popularity for both of those right now & it would be nice to see prices go down, especially for the pink variegated black velvet which I’ve already seen go down a couple hundred in the past few months.
I think you and I and everyone else feel this way! This spring/summer tho I’m gonna finally get a nice size mint and burle marx flame for $100 each and that’s so exciting lol. There’s my prediction.

Anthuriums are all I see in my instagram, and that has lead me to believe no one cares about philodendrons and monsteras anymore. But I do like philodendrons because they seem less fragile than anthuriums and are less fussy about humidity and watering... Nowadays they really need to be variegated for me to get interested, but I won't pay big money (more than ~80€) because when importing there's always a chance it fails. I only buy inside of EU but still it takes many days for packages to arrive from Netherlands or Belgium to Finland.
Ive never been a big fan of the Anthurium, however, my husband surprised me with one. He said he thought the flower was pretty. I have to say, that is my favorite plant in my home!😊
You're spot on about anthurium being popular in California. I see the community here going absolutely rabid for the hybrid anthuriums with closed sinuses. Your video will probably prop the price of the Homalomena pink diamond up. I was waiting for the price to come down more. They currently run around $450 US.
It would be so nice to see plant prices stabilize. I think a lot of good smaller growers and sellers are the ones who have suffered through all of this, mass producers have profited. Seems like an insane market...the volatility has just been so extreme!
I’m here for the philodendron hybrids! They are just so fun.
In the Summer Rayne Oak’s episode with Marie Nock’s backyard jungle tour, Marie touches on a past croton craze with their own societies and beautiful hybrids. I would love to see an interest in them again rise. So much more than the standard grocery store picks. They are bushy with insane colouring. A lot of the bright foliage I see featured in Thailand right now reminds me of this.
great predictions. love the casual content. humbly differ on the topic of anthurium hybrids vs philos. the beauty of home growers creating their own anthurium hybrids relatively easily compared to philos will continue to make it attractive to those looking to experiment and create. watching anthurium emergents, different sinuses, veins, colors, etc... for me it beats the hassle of philos with their unappealing EFNs. also think philos tend to take up way too much space for the routine hobbyist, whereas anthurium don't have quite as large of a footprint.

I agree! I personally get much more excited about anthurium hybrids. I think people find philos easier to care for although there are many anthurium that are fairly easy for beginners
I have a Royal Queen Philodendron and I absolutely love her dark purple leaves. I love the darker leaf plants!
In Poland anthuriums are at their best now, the community is growing. Hybrids are not too difficult to take care of
True and i think those are not so expensive here 🤔 idk why that is but i just recently bought qite nicely sized dark forgetii for about 80zł which is about 15£ 🙂

I am done enough with the Leaf on a Pole situation that I have a bundle of melanochrysum props that I might just stick in a pot and grow like a micans. So yes. I think bushier plants with fewer needs are just what the houseplant doctor ordered.

I highly agree with going for low maintenance plants .i noticed a few plant pages on CZcams mentioning they want to downsize and feel overwhelmed by their plants and they feel grated for the tougher plants. Personally 2020 gave a lot of planty people the time to stay home more and handle the high maintenance plants of their dreams . Life goes on

Similar videos forecasting 2024 from other houseplant CZcams channels seem to focus on *specific* plants that they think will be “fashionable“.
However, you focus is on big themes such as the state of tissue culture, the potential marketing, that growers will use to try to increase their prices and so forth is so much closer to the way I naturally approach issues such as forecasting future trends. As a plant person, I like what I like so I don’t lean on other to tell me what to like. What is more important to me is understanding what factors will affect the price of what I want to acquire.
With respect to new hybrids, I think that will be very interesting to watch. Every person watching your channel are hybrids of his/her mom & dad. If your mom & dad have another child, make another hybrid, that resulting hybrid (your full sibling) will not look exactly like you.
In the world of indoor houseplants, I think about the specific example of Steve Nick’s Anthurium Delta force that resulted when he crossed A. Clarinervium with A. Pedatoradiatum. I’m sure Steve could take the same 2 plants that he crossed to get *the* Delta Force and probably never get another plant exactly like it. Unless you get a cutting from or get a tissue culture of the OG Delta Force plant, that OG Delta Force will be relatively rare.
I think of 2 different types of people in the plant business:
One group prioritize making $$. These folks want a safe bet and have no problem setting plant prices crazy high.
The second group comprise those who have an interest, almost obsession, searching to discover a rare unknown beauty. These folks might search jungles to find unknown plants or grow plants with the goal of getting the plant to flower, cross pollinating different flowers and planting the resulting seeds.
I want to think that eventually, the second group, the searchers and explorers will eventually become the drivers in the industry again.

Totally agree about bushy plants in the corner. All my aroids have been “chopped to shape” and are not allowed to climb for miles!
i really think that we are just seeing the beginning of the anthurium boom. 2020 casual collectors are now hybridizing their collections and i think we are going to continue to see some cool variants and mutations.

have you noticed that a lot of Monstera "mints" are sold which are tc? in germany a lot of people go crazy about them and these plants are not the og mint.
I think your predictions are spot on because as a collector, I am only looking for a variegated or dark. Also, can’t wait until your fertilizer available in the US.

I always enjoy your videos! I’m one of those plant ladies that prefer dark leaves over variegated plants.
I have to agree with Ben, having only purchased anthurium seeds and seedlings in the last few months.
I really enjoy seeing how crosses mature. The suspense, the mystery… I get a hit of dopamine over and over with each new leaf. Each seedling is different and you always have the chance of getting a mutant. I won’t get that with hybrid cuttings/clones (anthurium or philodendron) that have the mature plant as the thumbnail when purchasing. Another perk to many anthuriums is their close internodal spacing, not requiring a pole. I feel a clumping anthurium in a self watering container in pon can most definitely be a contender for being the shrubby type of plant that requires little attention.
I’m excited for 2024! The only other things I plan on purchasing are staghorn ferns and a purple bougainvillea for my balcony in the spring.
Here in Norway, Coop store's has been selling the Monstera Thai for 250 nok= 24,5$ .....
That was just a commercial move to get loads of new customers😅. I don't know when it will happen again, but I don't think it will be a common thing in these stores. It was only to make people come in and to make people talk about the chain.
My focus this year will be on rare species of philodendron, begonia, and dieffenbachia.
So true on the dark plants vs variegated. I never cared for variegated but was always drawn to dark leaves. Never realised that these may be camps 😅

I got a squamiferum x distantilobum in the states from a Texas nursery that is all seed grown at the moment. I can’t wait to see what they look like mature! So far they aren’t as lobey as the parents but it’s pretty young. It’s got some cute chubby leaves that look like an adorable fat cephalopod.
An el choco hybrid would be awesome. I have such a hard time with mine I’ve had it two years and it’s still so small. A darker el choco that’s easier to grow would be out of control beautiful.
Have you tried a splendid? Pretty easy and similar vibes.

Not a philodendron, but i just bought a mutant manjula and I love it!❤
I love mine….but she grows soooo slowly and white edges get crispy pretty easily.
Also agree about hybrids and the Mint Monstera. Philodendron hybrids, especially those involving the Spiritus are interesting to me. I haven't really seen Alocasia hybrids but I wish that there were some since they have so many different leaf shapes and colours! I also agree on Anthuriums being niche, but I have to agree with Ben too, they've really been blowing up lately, can't say that I'm into it though, some of them are cool but they look way too similar to one another for me to justify the money and space. I feel like if you have one velvet-leaf type, one ribbon-leaf type, one corrugated-leaf type, a dark/red Anthurium and a pedatoradiatum you've pretty much covered most of the Anthurium range, then if you add a bird's nest type, you're now officially an Anthurium breeder. The variegated ones just suck, I'm sorry.
The plant that interests me the most at the moment is Monstera deliciosa, I'm in love with the different morphological varieties (Sierrana, Brazil, BMF, Compacta, Macrocosm, etc.) and also its variegated sports since it has so many! I've also been getting into just different stuff, no genus in particular, I'm excited about my new Microsorum thailandicum, I'd love to try a Licuala palm, I recently fell in love with a plant called Pithecellobium confertum, might try my hand at bonsai but also at a jungle-type high-humidity terrarium.
I'm from europe and I can confirm your story! some groups are snatching the monstera mints off the market in an insane pace. As soon as there are small shops selling 30 or so they are gone. TC is about 300 - 400 euros per plant but I've seen some sell at 200 for low quality as well. They are holding them back artificially at the moment only selling really small ones or TC. It will be interesting to see if private growers break them through at the end of the year. Oddly enough Thai are still selling for around 50-200 Euros depending on size and quality but you can get some White Monsters for 150 per TC. Which is weird but I guess they are not as well liked by private collectors. Personally I think the Mints are going to be more sought after once they take off. Albos still are going strong for private sellers. Shops not so much because you can get cuttings around 40-70 Euros and the shops are weeping because they realized private sellers chop them up and sell them per node XD. Not gonna buy a low quality whole plant if I can get really nice ones on Ebay and other shops from private sellers. I'm patiently waiting for the Mint price to go to around 100-150 Euros and then I'll snatch some. YES to dark plants and YES to easy plants. Thats why I'm betting on monstera because they are a favourite houseplant in europe. There is not a single person who has never seen a monstera casually lurking in some corner. At some point they just creep into your household or into your apartments staircase and you go "Has that always been there?". They won't be the "big buck" but they will be your bread and butter.
Would LOVE another investment plant video, especially with variegates! In the US, monstera mint has been becoming more available through TC (sold as plugs in agar, pre-acclimation, though they possibly look more like white monster? like a matrix of white/green veining instead of mint and dark green variegation). Last spring, they averaged $200-300, now they are in the $80-100 range from what I've seen; waiting for them to come down a bit more. Acclimated ones go for a bit more $. Monstera albo cuttings in California have come down a bit, still seem to be holding value though at $50-150 a cutting. Florida beauty and ghosts can find cheaper online, still have a significant price tag in plant shops in person! I also saw a GORGEOUS, mature monstera lechleriana in a shop and it made me want one of those beauties! Thank you for the lovely predictions and all the great information!

Yes I agree with the dark, I’ve been actively looking for super dark and dark green with red back foliage for a the last 6-8 months. Fingers crossed some more will be available I the Uk

Idk I feel like this only speaks for the UK because in the USA anthuriums have long been mainstream. And philodendron have long been dethroned here as well by anthurium. Hybrids have a possibility to spark that flame again but we are generally over philodendron here.
The average home depot, lowes, or basic nursery disagrees. I have only seen the same 3 cultivars. Maybe it's an arizona thing, but I know if I want a fun philodendron I have a selection of 15 at any given point. Changing quarterly it seems
The price of plants are definitively bottoming out, I dont think it will go up to 4 for 5 digits again now that everyone knows that the price will drop significantly with time. Anthuriums are having a surge of popularity because how easy it is to hybridize, but that market is saturating fast since everyone is doing it, I think we are at the tail of the popularity and it will die down a bit by the end of 2024.
I think investing in plants that are harder to maintain might be smart move for a smaller business. An example of this might be the queen anthuriums. If people are unable to keep theirs happy to propagate them effectively, then the availability of the plant would be limited and cause the price to stabilize at higher level.
I think other type of epiphytic plants group might also become more popular. Orchids might have a resurgence, and platyceriums are getting a lot of spotlights in Taiwan/Japan.

Just bought monstera mint and im eyeing few florida beauty hybrids especialy with tortum. Also there is new amazing hybrid of paraiso x billie. Soooo pretty.
I saw that hybrid and I’m in lust. Tortum is my favorite, so that’s my holy grail. And mint is the only monstera I want that I don’t have. On the prowl.
I think due to over-flooding the market, certain syngonium species will become harder to find in 2024. I recently tried to buy a syngonium albo, and despite them being everywhere for the last few years, I found it quite difficult to find an online shop in northern Europe that sold them at a reasonable price in late 2023. Perhaps shops became tired of syngonium, stopped chopping & propping them, and now they're becoming harder to come by.

Peace lilies will always be stable in my opinion just bc of how easy they are to keep
There's a rising trend here in asia with bougainvilleas some are sold for several thousands of dollars depending on its rarity and rootstock age and form
I agree with the Monstera Mint becoming a thing this year, most people’s Aureas seem to be unstable. I’ve heard the Mint is stable like the Thai Con 🤷♀️ There seems to be some new Philodendron species popping up in the USA now that look interesting 😀🇨🇦
Agree, aurea is SO unstable, I had 3, 2 reverted, one gone low var with every second leaf green. Annoying plant lol. Mint has to be more stable by the nature of its variegation...

Main prediction - the spiritus sancti will no longer hold the level of exclusivity it's had for a long time and will no longer be hard to find. Really, it's already relatively easy to find and more people have them now - you just have to make sure it's the real thing.
I found a zz raven in b&q in a shipment of green zz’s. Massive plant for £12! I’m pretty sure it was included in the delivery by mistake! Highly recommend . Totally dark.
My local nursery had a bunch of Thai Constellations for $120.00 US. Caved and bought one 😅 still growing well though 🤞 I wonder if things changed so heavily because so many people took a shot at growing and decided which worked for them and which didn’t. I’ve honestly kind of given up of pothos/ philodendrons tbh. But I’m in LOVE with my Jade right now
I got one that I thought was a great deal from easy to grow. 6 inch pot in picture with just juvenile leaves. I ended up with mature leaves that needed an immediate repot. I love it!
From SW USA watching this coming into July of ‘24- this was SO SPOT ON, except that, in my experience, and I’m (definitely… maybe… kind of?) sad to say that I’ve seen anthurium hybrids exponentially more than philos… aside from splendid, glorious and majestics. And maybe I’m just in the niche… but I’m not sure that anthurium has stayed niche 😬

Great Topic! I would be very interested in a video about TC. Especially where thy come from most. What about private people doing TC. There are many CZcams channels where if one is a bit lab wise can replicate this. Even with in detail Protocols. Maybe I am wrong.

Funny I am not that hot for Philodendron, only my Philo Micans, Brandi and Fuzzy Petiole are happy and they can stay. I just don't like the growth habits of most of them and the leave form is either oval or heart shaped. I can see myself with the longer leave types. In contrast, I love my Anthurium. Mainly non-velvet ones (Pedant ones, Giganteum, Effusilobum; Pedatum), I love their huge leaves, creative leave forms (+ their change when they are more adult), their textures and they are easy! I only fail with the "easy ones" like Clarinervium, Crystalinum. The most bougee one is my small Pterodactyl, I'd love a dark boi next. They are doing great in northern Germany without any additional tech stuff, except for some lights in winter.
Cant wait to see more updates on this in the future.

It feels kind of like "pure species" of rare plants are not rare anymore. Like ofc there's plenty of uncommon/rare plants that no one is interested in. But the plant community isn't into many of those plants. But hybrids are a great way of producing stuff that can have that same rare feeling to it we all kind of liked before and during the pandemic.
The only reason these plants went up was due to Covid.
I never understood how new plant shops thought they would remain open once life went back to normal.
I will never pay high triple digits for a plant, it’s ridiculous. I’m glad plant prices are more reasonable. It’s still a fun hobby for me and healthier since prices are back to normal.

I was on a waitlist with Enid's shop for years for a thia for 75 nothing ever came of it so then i waited for costa farms then that was a flop. Like an idiot i finally dropped 499 on a med size beauty. It was not even a month later they dropped significantly. Live and learn i guess .

I totally hear the Anthurium are a niche. I would say at least in America (I’m in California) people go fkin crazy for em. Especially hybrids. But additionally the prices for local buying and importing are pretty much the same (ignoring shipping) in my experience and that’s not wholesale pricing but you know what I mean. So tbh in my opinion buying anthurium locally or not importing when you can is the best way. Also less fear of poaching in my opinion.
Additionally I think Variegated Alocasia are climbing up the ladder so to speak more people are getting them so more corms/babies are available which is lowering the prices from where they were.
I think “special” anthurium (delta force. Bvep. Carlablackiae etc.) will keep a higher price but hybrids are dropping in price quite quickly cause they’re a bit easier for private sellers / people who already have the plants to make and pass around.
Var anthurium I think will keep quite a hefty price tag (for the velvety ones at least) the birds nest type anthurium are becoming more prevalent from TC from what I see.
I feel like it’s monstera >philodendron >anthurium >other. I live in California and people still want monstera albo more than any other plant. People are still willing to pay a lot for cuttings of these plants. No one has the patience for growing other types of plants.
I feel this way, too! I work at a nursery in SoCal, and can’t tell you how many times I’ve had people come in to ask if we have any monstera albos.

it's a different plant... There are two "mint" monsteras on the market right now. The one sold widely from TC is more like Kunzos White monster, it's a large from deliciosa with speckled variegation. The Mint Kaylee has is a noid Mint (actually "Jungle Mint") from Barry Shwartz. The mature leaves look different than large form deliciosa, that's why it's called noid.

Anthuriums are scary though. Really scary. You find a beautiful beautiful plant, then do some quick 5 min research to hopefully confirm that it will grow well in your conditions, and everyone is saying the same thing: DON'T. You have to watch the temperature, the humidity, the fertilizer, they can just die on you cause they're mad after the transport. Anthuriums and Alocasias have a really bad rep. They're like the Calatheas of aroids 😂 with a few exceptions. Mine are doing great, but they're an Andraeanum, a Clarinervium and a Vittarrifolium. They're cool with anything ❤

To be honest I’ve only seen maybe one or two anthuriums that have that reputation and they’re plants that are native to the cloud forests. I started getting in to them this past year and I was pleasantly surprised with how easy and hardy they are. My first import was an anthurium and it’s doing so well several months later. I have some in my grow tent and some in ambient conditions. I have a few philos that are more difficult than any of my anthuriums. I keep mine in moss/perlite which is my preferred medium anyway, they get the same nutrients as my other plants (foliage pro and calmag), and I try to keep the humidity above 50-60% for all my plants.
@@sarahg2665 I don't have the space for grow tents or cabinets so everything goes in the plant room. The humidity is usually around or above 60%. Moss is not that accessible here. I have them in mostly orchid bark and some aroid mix. Strangely enough, they seem to like the orchid fertilizer better than the one for aroids, so that's what I've been doing for the past few months. Do you have some anthuriums you would recommend that do well in a sunny room (no grow tent conditions)?
@@dianal3827 definitely any forgetti, magnificum, or crystallinum hybrids will do well in those conditions. There are so many mag and forgetti hybrids right now so you have tons of options. You’ve mentioned you already have a clarinervium and vittarifolium which also do well in ambient. Honestly the majority of them can do very well without a grow tent, they just may need more frequent watering. If you buy from a seller that has grown them in a tent/cabinet or you have an import that needs extra humidity, you can acclimate them in a plastic storage bin and slowly reduce the humidity by taking off the lid for more time each day. I do have a humidifier for my plants that are outside the grow tent but I only really use it during the winter.
Yeah cloud forest types are tricky, but unless you are keeping your anthurium in 20% humidity, with no light, letting them dry out in terracotta, keep them in pure potting soil and never fertilizing them, I think you really can't go wrong... I find there are plenty of examples of youtubera successfully growing anthurium and whenever I see a youtuber struggling with theirs (unless it's a cloud forest one with very specific needs) you can usually tell by watching other ppl's videos what they are doing wrong...
Again, some ppl don't have the right conditions and that's that. But I am ready to abandon moss poles and constant chopping and propping and for me Anthurium fit that criteria perfectly.

Variegated plants are desperately out of fashion since the 90's in the outdoor plants world, and honestly don't see them coming back any time soon. It's all about more wild, natural looking plants these days, and I wonder if the same could happen for indoor plants.
I feel like they’re more popular than ever at the moment.
I'm not against TC in the slightest bit, it's a great method to preserve plants. But when it's overdone - when the intention is to produce as many plants as possible, there will be a decrease in quality because you don't really pay much consideration into the validity of the methods (in creating healthy plants). When the plants quality suffers, the plants suffer too and this isn't what we want if we proclaimed ourselves to be plant lovers especially. Thin leaves, lanky stems, low immunity, all create weak plants and no hate but if the Thai market, as you said, has been flooded severely, those plants that don't sell will be neglected and that is even more saddening. Genes become quite fragile when they're exposed to extreme amount of agonists/growth hormones in order to multiply as quickly as possible. It's like they're exposed to an accelerated aging process. At least that's how humans' genes work.
