- I visit my friend Jumanji Jon (Instagram @jumanji_jons_plants), a rare tropical plant collector and relatively new seller on Facebook. In this episode, we discuss buying and selling rare plants on social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram. We discuss the obstacles of being a plant seller, the enormous workload that happens behind the scenes, and the challenges of juggling family and frequently a second job.

Been feeling empowered since deleting my FB account. It was nice though to hear about the plant selling community on there. Thanks Jimmy for featuring John. You were right, he seems like a super guy. Just love how grandmothers ignite lifelong passions in their grandchildren that end up impacting the lives of others.. Thanks for another enjoyable video. Loved the visit. Keep em coming!
Aw thanks for the kind words. The FB plant community has its drama like any other community, but generally the pros outweigh the cons. Definitely give it another shot if you are up for it again =)
Q
Great video. I have bought some plants on Facebook for my collection. Thanks again for the great video.
I just wanted to say how mucb I enjoy your videos, because they are saw raw and just honest without all this insta glam, just showing how it really is! Super nice to watch 🌱
Jon is honestly the nicest guy. I got to pick some stuff up from him and it was so great meeting him!
I have an Etsy store. I will be using it for small exotic/rare plant business. The way the economy is, I've learned an online business is where it's at. Forget FB.
Is it hard to start on Etsy
Jon is so sweet. Even my mom adores him! His plants are beautiful and I’ve never had issues with pests. I got my beautiful Albo Borsigiana plant from him and many others. I’m excited you featured him!
I always get emotional when selling my own plants :D
I am so glad you are making a video featuring Jumanji Jon. He is a great seller and his plants are amazing!! It’s great seeing you interviewing him and he is just a such great guy.
I love Jumanji Jon and have purchased from them several times always with a positive experience!
Thank you for this video!
I love Jumanji Jon!! One of the best sellers I’ve purchased from. The plants are always in great shape when they arrive, regardless of the insane shipping delays that can happen, especially lately. I can’t recommend him more!
John's work ethic is refreshing. I would imagine that selling anything alive and perishable would be tough to deal with.
Especially when you inevitably come across an unreasonable customer. It would be enough to pull your hair out!
I really enjoy your videos, Jimmy! They're beyond interesting and insightful!
*EDIT:* I wanted to add that I think that selling on Facebook is particularly rough because people expect a level of immediacy being that it's a social media platform. Amazon has paved the way for easy returns and non-stringent refunds. I feel like the typical customer has grown accustom to that sort of accommodation. Which can be rough for small business owners!
Negatives aside, I'm sure that selling plants is extremely rewarding as well. I bet that both of you have received updates from customers who will enjoy their purchases for years to come!
Thanks for the comment Veronica. The immediacy expectation is definitely something unique to social media platforms. Most people seem very content waiting weeks with plant websites and even Etsy. FB buyers seem to want their plants by the next week, or constant updates. Thanks again for tuning in and stay well Veronica.
People see a higher price, well you need to ask why. What do they do different. Ask to see a picture of the plant YOU will get. Ask how it is shipped if regular, priority, express. Ask how is it packaged.
Ask if it is still in the port with soil dried out. Ask all these questions so you know why you are paying a higher price. Ask both sellers. Then if both similar after seeing the plant and asking how tall, how many leaves etc. Then after comparison you can decide if it is too high of a price from one seller before you jump the gun.
Yessss I love jumanji Jon!!
Jons plants are the best! Such a nice guy :).
I can’t stand selling on FB. The flakiness gets to me- much respect for dealing with all that!
Yes... there are lots of inconveniences with selling on fb for sure, and I agree lots of respect for those who deal with it.
I completely agree, it’s quite a challenge selling on FB but Once people have been weeded out I am pretty successful at selling high ticket items
WOW his plants are gorgeous, I need to try to find him on fb.
Great interview! Nice to hear other plant people’s stories. Been curious about how to buy plants on facebook so this was helpful.Have actually been involved in packing plants for sale and appreciate the time consuming process.
Glad you enjoyed it! Stay well Jane!
Yes! that guy is awesome! I bought a bunch of plant from him, definitely recommend
I don't belong to any FB buy and sell groups. Need to check them out. Will be looking for Jon. Thanks Jimmy!
Its awesome to put a face to the name .. Not what I was expecting from a gym named Jumanji Jim . I was very pleasantly surprised, he seems like a total chill down to earth dude.
Thank you for the amazing video.
I used to sell hundreds of plants a month on Facebook I agree its a lot of work I've stop selling plants on Facebook now and I just sell locally because I just don't have enough time in the day anymore sadly but hoping to get back into sewing plants on their again next year
I agree. I only sell locally every so often now. Cheers!
Oh! That’s sweet of you I love jumanji he’s excellent I got a beautiful syngonium from him and is growing beautifully
Jon J is the best
Thank you for this info i am getting into the business as well ! I have a store front in my house. Hopefully I can make my vision come true!
The best example of the same plant with different prices is the Philodendron pink princess, the price depends if they have pink on the leaves or none or if they are small or big.
I bought from him a few months ago awesome plants! I recently got into selling a couple months ago it’s awesome to hear I’m not the only one who experienced crazy days of messaging and shipping. There’s not a lot of information on selling I’d love to see more content like this!
Definitely going to try to share more. The pandemic has really put a halt on things haha.
Wow, nice guys, both of you. On the other hand I would find another platform. Everyone's deleting Fb, so tired of their liberal crap! Good luck, wish you great success!
Building & running a BUSINESS solo is ALOT of work. Your doing the administrative duties (paperwork of invoices, records, etc., customer service, promoting/advertising, marketing, distribution, ALONG with GROWING & CARING for (product) plants. Usually buzinesses have departments with bussiness partners or hired help. One person D.I.A. (doing it all) is more than a hobby. It takes serious commitment to running a business and growing it. Breaking $$ even $$ with plant addiction by selling/trading is cool & nice (when feeling guilty of purchasing a "must-have"), profiting is sweeter & better.
Thanks for the comment friend! Yeah, I think lots of people underestimate how tough the plant selling business is.
Watching here not even halfway through, waiting for you guys to mention or talk about business license to sell seeds and plants. Thanks for sharing the experience to us.
Fun to see the man behind the name. I have purchased several things from him & they have been great.
I recently started buying plants on Facebook and Instagram. I have had amazing experiences on both platforms.
This is very interesting.🤔 I’m not really a FB person. I’ve joined couple of groups, but really over my head, a lot too learn. This is a reality check of all that’s involved in selling on FB. Thanks Jimmy 😃
Haha, I can definitely see that the FB groups can be a bit intense lol
You might want to consider working part-time at the Home Depot Garden CENTER. I'm loving it!
Yes mi favorite local...seller! I always go in with the intention of a budget....and that goes out the door🤣...John and his fiance are super welcoming friendly and knowledgeable
..their backyard is awesome, my son loves feeding the fish in their pond...
Awwww, all that sounds so great. Yeah, I imagine both kids and adults get a kick out of his pond. Great family. Cheers!
He is so fun!
Getting buffed doc! This is helpful for me whose starting out a same online Facebook shop!
Good luck David!
Thanks for this video
So where do you get your plants from to sell? I keep trying to research but can’t find anything
Love that guy. Highly recommended. His plants are healthy and beautiful and his packaging is top-notch
hi from winter wonderland 🙌norway☃️☃️⛷
Tell us how u pack your succulent plants when u send it by post or?
This spring I will start my succulent business🙌
I bought few plants from Jomanji already!
I love your plants
where do you get the plants you sell from? or how did you find wholesalers?
My son thinks I need to monetize this hobby, but it seems like a lot of work to me. Its nice to hear from you guys on what is really involved. Now my kid needs to watch this one. Wow! Looking forward to seeing more. Thanks Jimmy!
Definitely a ton of work, which is why I stopped. Then again, youtube is even more work so not really sure about my decision making there lol
How do I start selling plants on eBay? Do l have to start opening LLC or how tax is work ?
My issue, is that I don't know how to find growers. Do you buy from Nursery/wholesale places, and how do you find your suppliers?
So..... what does he have in stock? jesssst kidding! I respect plant sellers and I'm sorry if I ever ask a dumb question. Sometimes I get scared to even ask. This was very good info and nice to know about sellers 😊
Hi! I was wondering how you came into contact with growers to purchase plants in bulk for reselling? I’ve struggled with that greatly! Thank you and your business looks incredible 😊
It's easy. There are plenty of nurseries that sell in bulk to resellers. BUT, you have to have a legitimate business. By that I mean you need to pay taxes on what you sell and in many US states your business must be registered.
I'm going for more the medicinal and rare. Also if they want something as gift , hand made.
There are also some more magyck blends
hes giving honnest advices
How do you do a purge?
I really appreciate this video! Curious to know how long he’s been doing this, I don’t remember if he mentioned it.
He stated 3-4 mos
Just got a plant from him! He is awesome!
he’s my uncle!!
I love every single plant I have received from jumangi
I want one of the Hawaiian Pothos it's one of my favorites.
It's gotta be a really wild and unique market, just selling based on how fb tends to move
This is such a cool video! I’d love seeing one with Jonathan from Next World Exotics!
🤩
😙🌿
The Market Place does have a rating system. Many sellers don't have a rating
Why he reminds me of Dexter 🤔
Please ask this seller to consider a other way to sell plants besides Facebook. Alot if people, including myself, don't have Facebook.
Im sure you can just email him directly and buy that way.
Hey it's not unlawful child labor when it's your kids. Children start digging, mix soil, repot. Pronto. Teaching children about working hard, responsibility, & hard work. Admin., promo, advert. for your spouse. Division of labor. 🤑
Lol! Division of labor, lmao haha
Becoming a plant seller is my dream! I just am having a hard time finding sources.
Monica Jones overseas sources to import from.
Monica Jones haha ok? Apparently you are new to the plant community. Almost all plants are imported. How exactly does it ruin the ecosystem in your opinion? Maybe you’re in the wrong hobby.
Monica Jones that’s why you pay for a phytosanitary certificate when importing. I’m fully aware of the laws and processes of importing legally and safely. I only said you must be new because you originally said you were just starting.
Monica Jones also I’m talking about houseplants which can live basically anywhere. Humidifiers and grow lights can replicate their home environment.
How much money does a person that sells plants like these make a month
I’m ready to start selling plans jk
Complaining and complaining if you really love it you would never say it’s hard
One day you will realise how much face book has taken from people. The proof is you cannot have succesfull buisness without having to deal with facebook, pay them for advertisement. waist so much time. Like the mafia really.
So you not in quarantine.
Quarantine for what?
Legends Of Monstera
Isn’t America lockdown due to the virus, as will as other countries
Haha we definitely are. This series was filmed in January I believe.
John Travolta look a like 😊
clearly no one knows who Jumanji Jon is, but probably cause he’s changed his name on social media more than enough times once he’s exposed for his scams and racism, yikes!
hes selling a pink princess for 400 ;/
