I don’t recommend any standalone vr if you’re getting into VRchat, it hinders your experience quite a bit, but if you’re willing to just connect it to a pc, then I would just go for standalone with a link, full body and everything else is just meant for more expressive movements, like dancing, so unless you plan to become a vr breakdancer, I wouldn’t go after that stuff either.

For people who have trouble with the comfort of the Quest 2, I hated it and couldn't play without pain for longer than 30 minutes until I got the Bobo M2 headstrap with the battery. Definitely recommend trying it or any other headstrap with a counterweight on the back/a halo design. Now hours and hours blow by and I barely feel discomfort at all, and definitely do not feel pain. Got me back into VR after a long lull!

Totally agree on both points, the wife wouldn't even put her Quest 2 on until the strap arrived (having tried mine). The moving of the weight onto the top of your head makes it so much more comfortable with the Bobo, you can even partly flip the headset up whilst using it to talk to people.

The was a hardware mod that adds EyetrackVR to Bigscreen Beyond. The official Bigscreen CZcams channel showed it off and showed interest in a possible official kit for it (or at least that was what it seemed to me). Plus as a Linux user, the EyetrackVR is something I want. The HTC VIVE Pro Eye didn't have Linux supported eye tracking nor did the face tracking. So open source solutions are what are required for me to use those features. Here's hoping a FOSS face tracker happens.

They want to expand the BigScreen. If you have ever gone on Steam and used their VR game. It is worth a play. Game is same name as the company. So many things to share and watch and play and listen to. It is similar to VR chat. However, it does one thing better than VR chat. It allows you to share media in live time easily with others. Also, BigScreen does produce quality products that I have seen so far. I need to upgrade from my OG Vive. I Would like passthrough. However, I think Bigscreen is where it is at. I understand that there is flare in the edges of bright screens or objects. So, that has me worried a bit. Right now, I am torn between Quest 3 and Bigscreen. My HTC Vive is still in really good condition. However, I am tired of the bulk and the image quality.
I am really worried about the leap to a new headset.

As a new VR user who opted for a PICO 4, I'd say the advice for the Quest 2/3 pretty much applies to the PICO.
Quality wise you could consider it to be a Quest 2.5, and the official streaming app works flawlessly when connecting to PCVR, both wired or wireless.
There's also the PICO trackers, which might be a cheap way to try out simple FBT before taking the plunge into more expensive options.
Edit: All my info on the PICO trackers comes from the following video: czcams.com/video/-zSK7A_bM2E/video.html

    • @MaterialFuture
      @MaterialFuture Před 4 měsíci +6

As someone that hops between the Q3 and Pico4 both are great headsets, both standalone and for PCVR. I did find the performance for the Quest being great right out the box using the link cable as well as the Oculus app in comparison the Pico's streaming software. In Virtual Desktop you should be able to get better performance for both headsets by avoiding their software.
If the Pico 5 were coming out I would have stayed within Pico long-term.

@@MaterialFuture I've had no issues at all using the official Pico streaming app for PCVR, both wired and wireless. From what I've researched, at launch the app was so-so, but it has improved drastically, to the point that Virtual Desktop is no longer a necessity. But I haven't compared, to be honest, once I tried the streaming app, I had no need to buy Virtual Desktop so... Maybe it does work better. 😅

8:20 just to add it, since you didn't mention it: SlimeVR can also still be very difficult to setup and configure. Even if you follow all the steps, it is heavily reliant on *how* they are mounted to your body and the initial skeleton measurement in order to work properly. It can work for some people, but it's VERY DIY. This problem increases exponentially when you create your own trackers.

I recently won a Meta Quest three from work as a raffle prize and was definitely blown away compared to my previous VR venture back in 2017 when I bought an HTC Vive. I’m 1000% waiting for the “valve index 2” or I may go big or go home with the big screen beyond and index knuckle controllers.

I just upgraded from an HTC VIVE I got used in Facebook marketplace in 2020 for $100 to a Quest 2 I got on rollback at Walmart for $150!
I’m using steam link on the quest 2 to wirelessly play my PCVR games with the BOBOVR battery head strap so I never have to charge it. It’s amazing.

I just bought my Valve index and it arrives today. I just wanted the knuckles and base stations without having to buy them separately. I plan on using the index as much as possible and then upgrade later in the year because I’m sure the big screen VR will be topped by something else and the index is STILL reliable so i’m not worried.

Now there were a few things PHIA left out in this video like Full Body Estimation which is a trackerless solution for full body tracking, although it's not very good yet but is good for people who absolutely need tracking but can't afford trackers yet.

I'm a current index and vive 3.0 user, but after a few years my index is looking worse for wear haha. I've used this opportunity to purchase a quest pro for the face tracking plus an extra vive tracker to use fbt with it, i'm so looking forward to the change since i also suffer from the small head swallowed by big headset problem xD the quest pro looks a lot nicer on my cheekbones since it puts the weight on the forehead instead. Thanks for the video Fia!

I’m in VR since last week. Got myself a Quest 2 so if I don’t like it I don’t have a hole in my pocket. Got it on long term rent, so I only pay a couple Bucks for the usage and probably will upgrade to the Quest 3 or maybe 4 if it’s out then in a year. For now I’m very happy with the 2, got myself an better strap and some correction lenses which should arrive in two days. As a cheaper entry it’s still great imo.

I just bought a Quest 2 256gb, slightly preowned, $190 on eBay on the recommendation of a GameStop Clerk. Seems like they are corporate or display models. It came with everything new in box. I didn’t need the biggest or best thing. PSVR1 was the only experience I had with vr previously. If I come to love this I’ll upgrade down the line.

Ive been using VR since 2017. I compiled a list of everything I want in VR. It would be great to get a headset that has a crazy high refresh rate, high fov, extremely clear image (maybe at least 4k per eye if not 8k per eye), no fernel lens effects, both optional stand alone and PC cable connected (easily pops out incase someone trips over cable), a flip-up front optics (flip up front part), adjustable for dramatic eye apart or closeness widths, easy to adjust on the head (push, pull, tighten head set to fit head length with no cables rubbing or grinding), adustable for glasses, feels comfortable on the head, not too heavy, not too much light leak, comfortable around the nose area (allows you to move your nose around and see through nose area) comfortable top strap, comfortable to sleep with, easy clean detachable and strong facal fabric, optional plug-inable headphones along with standard issue headphones (good and durable headphones like the valve-index), flip-up headphones (flip it away from your ear easily; durable enough to lay and sleep on it; comfortable enough to sleep in VR with it), a clear mic (like the valve index mic), fully compatible with face tracking (eye, mouth, and tongue tracking accuracy), doesn't spy on you, compatable with valve-index controllers, compatable with valve wands, compatable with 2.0 base stations (no third party software), compatable with vive trackers (all 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0 trackers), compatable with haptic feedback suit and tredmills, affordable (within $1000), has a good product support service team, video tutorials for product setup, well tested for durability and quality (with goal to make one headset to rule them all), a feedback form, easy to set up devices guide (calibrates and configures quickly), has menus to fully configure and customize controller button layouts, has a button on the headset (for sleep, awaken, and power; also an additional functions button which is configurable to any function or controller button a user wants), comes with cool stickers, has an excellent box and unboxing experience, and is widely used by users due to a great and excellent marketing team. That's what I want and I'm willing to pay for.

I know this is 4 months later but I have a quest 3 but I’m pretty much unable to buy these so if anyone is in my situation I had watched a a few videos covering some full body tracking apps that you can get on your phone and I started using Viso. Not perfect but it’s decent and I cant really say much since I only really tested it for about an hour on VRC but it does work just don’t be like me and have only 1 rather dim lamp on and be wearing jeans and a black shirt because it struggled quite a bit. I will edit this post when I have done further testing. I have also gotten a new head strap with external battery from Kiwi design and boy I’m glad I did. SO much more comfortable and didn’t feel any after effect like I did with the standard head straps. I’m sure there are far better but a friend recommended me the one I got and got it in 2 days did 1 to 1 1/2 hours of testing and had no issues. I do think at some point I would like to get a better headset and some proper trackers but at the moment I need to focus on saving money for more important matters such as getting a car. And a better job. Then I can go to thinking about other things.

Question on your base station setup. What kind of rod are you using to mount them? I take it you're in a similar situation of not being allowed to drill any holes and I really like the idea of a low profile solution like that instead of tripods.

  • @DeathRisiing

I bought a Quest 2 last month for my birthday bc I noticed it had finally dropped in price. I was so happy. Imagine the sinking feeling in my gut when I found out a week later that the only reason it went on sale was bc the Quest 3 just came out... I had no idea, I stopped following VR news years ago bc I figured I'd never be able to get a headset bc they're so expensive (VR is SO expensive 💀), and I'm a disabled broke boy. I'm happy with my Quest 2, but there's a lingering icky feeling now knowing the Quest 3 was _right there._ I've even spent ~$100 extra dollars on it for a better headstrap (and some other nifty things) with Christmas Money due to the OG headstrap giving me severe neck strain for 2wks, and I could've just used that money to put towards the Quest 3 instead. Oh well lol. Maybe I'll upgrade in a few years.
This is a fantastic guide btw, your videos are the only reason I know about various trackers and how to make your own avatars for VRChat. Please pardon my lil rant. Happy VR-ing! ♥

I recently purchased the index as my first vr kits, i've been really happy with it so far its just i am scared of anything now coming out. Granted i purchased it with the idea of getting more trackers aswell as on my guess that no further valve vr will be realeased for atleast another year. Its been 4 years since people kept telling me to wait. I simply had enough. But it does make me question if i made the right choice.

Great video. I've not seen a Quest Pro sold at full price for a very long time, here they're often cheaper than the upgraded memory quest 3, which gives you not just eye/face (and now tongue) tracking but a pair of Pro controllers ($300) a base that charges the controllers and the headset ($130), twice the storage of the base Quest 3, and what to me is the biggest upgrade of all, a separate headset jack for each ear (I know it sounds silly, but having a separate really short headphone for each ear is just wonderful and really should have been on the 3). It's still slower than the 3 though, so I'd say for VRChat, especially PCVR VRChat, the Pro is better, for standalone games the 3 is better.

My Quest 2 head strap looks insane. I have BoboVR with the center strap going front to back across the middle of the top of my head with strong Velcro attached to it. I got an old basketball cap, cut out the front visor, and attached Velcro to the top attaching it to the Bobo strap. On the back of that strap is something to hold the PC cable to keep it behind me. I use a similar thing on the left side to keep the Bobo power cable out of the way when using the PC cable.
Underneath the cap, I folded a washcloth to prop up the Oculus higher up my head so the front face is now eye level. I tried attaching stuff to those two rubber things on the top of the Bobo, but this puts all the weight of the headset on two small areas on the top of my head and the pressure causes me intense pain for some reason. Using the washcloth distributes the weight evenly and the fabric of the cap helps keep the Quest from sliding around my face and dipping forward from the heavy front weight.
The problem is there's too much weight on the Oculus. It should contain the lenses, displays, and gyros AND NOTHING ELSE. Everything remaining should be hook on a belt or something like the battery and computer stuff that makes it a standalone headset. Putting it all in the front of your face is bad design. The headset is always fighting to slide down your face requiring you to either vice grip it to your head or do the insane stuff I'm doing.
Do better Valve on your second headset. Make it light as possible and make it comfortable!!!

HTC just quietly dropped their eye and face tracker today for the XR Elite for 200 bucks on their business stream site (they are targeting devs first before a broader push as it doesn't support the Vive standalone version of VRChat just yet). That paired with their "Ultimate" trackers should make for an interesting combo. :D

Quest 3, hands down! I've been using it since release and compared to the Quest Pro I didn't have to be QA tester of 4 individual units before finally giving up on it. Just invest in am aftermarket headstrap and you will be golden.

    • @CoPoint

There's possibly an even cheaper option: try something like, for example, the "AMVR Head Back Padding for Quest 2" (it practically cups around the back of your head, kinda like the Pro Strap does), and just thread the strap of the Quest 3 through it... much more comfortable by spreading the pressure over a much bigger area, supposedly, if you don't mind totally flattening the hair on the back of your head 😁. (I got that tip from someone's video about must-have accessories for the new Q3, but I can't for the life of me remember the guy's name anymore 😬...)

I'd also shout-out Pimax for the same-ish tier of the Index. The Crystal and 8k seem just....get a Varjo or Bigscreen instead unless the FOV is the ONLY thing you care about.
But the 5K is close to the same price as the Index (just the headset, still needs the base stations and I'd go with Index controllers) but for that you get similar-or-better refresh rate, similar pixels per degree, but MUCH better field of view! And as someone who's first serious headset was a Pimax 5k, that wide FOV is hard to move away from.
