Rainy Night Walk in the Gateway to the Cotswolds - BURFORD - ENGLAND

- So, this evening we are out and about walking in the Cotswold town and civil parish of Burford, which is located in the west of Oxfordshire, England. Burford is 18 miles (29 km) west of Oxford and 22 miles (35 km) southeast of Cheltenham.
Burford is often referred to as the 'gateway' to the Cotswolds. It has quite an eclectic mixture of architecture, everything from typical Cotswold Stone cottages through to a baroque-style town house which was recently the Methodist Church (the building that we peer through the front gates in the video). It looks like it has been recently sold! The population of the town in 2011 was 1,422.
One of the most popular buildings in the town is the parish church - St John the Baptist. It is a Grade I listed building. In 1649 the church was used a prison to hold mutineers from the New Model Army Banbury.
As the A361 road runs through the centre of Burford, it makes for an incredibly busy thoroughfare regardless of the time of day (also the town is not surprisingly & understandably very much a favourite tourist hot spot). The town has a large car park which is free to park in. I must say, I am quite taken with Burford, so much so that I returned a couple of days later for a night walk in the rain.

Magical! Every time we've visited Burford there were throngs of people. What a nice change to walk through with you at night listening to the soothing patter of rain on your umbrella. Thinking of making a reservation at the Greyhound B&B if we visit again. Enchanting walk....thank you❤

Bone dry here in Colorado, and so hot already at 31 C, so I’m quite envious of your glorious rain! Very peaceful walk, though I worried you’d take another tumble in the dark. Hope you’ve recovered from your last walk. You seem very familiar with Burford; I’m planning a visit in September. I really enjoy all your videos. Thank you for bringing me along your night walk.

Fortunately no tumble on this walk. Getting to know Burford reasonably well as it is my 2nd time here. September will be a nice time of year to visit…comfortable temperatures, plenty of greenery still and not quite as busy as the summer months.

It was a treat to have another walk notification pop up, and as I wasn’t working and had a free half-hour, I just watched it. Very nice- as always. :) The nighttime rain walks have a special quality, as the cheerful lights from homes, shops, and street-lamps cast such pretty reflections on the wet pavement. I noticed and liked the contrast a couple of times when you suddenly went from brightly lit streets into alleys or back-streets where the only light at all was from your camera- so it was almost complete darkness. The contrasted difference was quite interesting to see. They say it is supposed to rain here tonight (though the present bright sunshine causes me doubt), so if rain materializes, a nighttime rain walk may take place here, too- after I return home from a music rehearsal. We’ll see…
Thanks for acknowledging D-day’s 80th anniversary in your info section! How very important it is to always acknowledge the extreme (and ultimate) sacrifices that were made by others for the freedoms that we daily enjoy.
I watched a brief speech that King Charles made at the Normandy ceremonies (so glad that his health permitted him to attend), and had tears in my eyes as I saw elderly veterans- most in wheelchairs- lined up and listening….people who could picture the faces of friends and beloved family members amongst the honored dead. Very moving……

🕘9pm and all is well 🪖🎺. I can imagine the plethora of scents encountered. Rain draws every uniquenesses out, each foliage type, ground, pavement, stone, vehicle, building, (garbage can). I think I had a dog's nose as a kid... I remember distinctly breathing deep constantly and capturing every nuance at all times. Not so much now, I guess I wore it 👃out. I'm very lucky to catch a storm's petrichor anymore. How about you Sir☔, do you remember the fragrances on this walk? The smokey still hot oily engine? Each tree? Each steam from each outdoor light? Wish we had SmellAVision. This would've been an amazing adventure for me younger nose.
Good day, L.J. Great to hear from you today. Hope you are OK. I hear on the news that is has been a bit toasty in your neck of the woods just lately. As this one was filmed a couple of months ago I don't recall any strong scents. I do like the smell of fresh cut grass just after a summer downpour. Funny that as kids our senses were super strong.

"Nextdoor" to me yes 🔥🥵, but here? Tons of ⛈️ every other day... Like Cotswold, you can't see the air for the lush jungle, you can't keep the gas cans full for trying to tame the yards (more with weedeaters as mowers and boots sink into spongey ground) and 🦟-vampires cloak you when you step out the door which when opened are portals for 🕷️spiders and 🐜🪱🪰🦗things trying to find dry grounds. Sheesh!

Only a little, but that’s because I live in the US , where I wouldn’t dare walk anywhere at 9 pm. The UK is quite different. But yes, the video had a few spooky like parts. Lovely rain though ☺️
