I think that was awful. Made David lose his face.
That was every penny Benyamine had to his name too. He played with his entire networth on the table. If you're foolish enough to put every cent on the table then you deserve to lose it in my opinion when you make a bad play. He's very lucky Laliberte allowed that deal. Everyone at the table knew he played with every cent and that's why it was such a huge deal and people were nervous.

Whether he won that pot or lost that pot the money doesn't matter to Guy..........

The hand between Laliberte and Benyamine was one of the craziest situations in poker, I remember watching it when it came out. Miss these days!
Even worse, that was a large portion of his bankroll. You can tell by his reaction when he sees Guy's hand that he's shitting himself at the money he's most likely going to lose.

@@christianwai1796 Guy Laliberte founded Cirque du Soleil. He is an entertainer what would have been more entertaining and better for the show, think about it. We are talking about this on YT like how many years later after the fact.
In that episode Guy was already winning like crazy so him beating Benyamine would actually have no more entertainment value, but him offering the deal that would be more...right...
Lastly I think Guy could have realized that knocking Benyamine out of the show would have been bad for the show so out of a certain professional courtesy to the show's producers he offered the deal to Benyamine.
@@ChairmanMo I thought I read somewhere that Guy knew Bennyamine had way, way to much of his bankroll at stake here, so he supposedly let him off. Apparently they knew each other pretty well and he was aware he was in a pretty bad downswing and taking a massive risk playing this game. I’ve never been able to find an actual source for that though.
This was the most entertaining poker in the history of televised poker.

I remember the Benjamin-Laliberté hand like it was yesterday. It changed the way I view/ed high stakes no-limit. You can’t beat an infinite bankroll in the long run no matter how good you are.
Yeah you can. All the elite high stakes pros have made a living off playing people with huge bankrolls
@@AinsleyHarriott1 I think you’re missing the point. All bank rolls have ceilings regardless of how good a player is. The bankroll has to fade the swings. Also, the pool of pros from then to now is not static. Some come and go because of MONEY, and more importantly, the ones that succeed are not bankrolled entirely independently. Someone has a stake in them. They have stake in other people. They have become incorporated. In this sense, the differential position shrinks enough to act as an equalizer, and once again, through hedging, the player can fade the swings because of the ‘pro player’s’ mathematical advantage. In other words, the observation on the above hand was very specific. If you simply gloss over my thought by identifying the incredibly obvious rich flounder argument, then you understand neither history, nor nuance, and you miss the historical nuance of a uniquely specific moment in poker history.

Guy Laliberte is, assuredly, a consummate gentleman in the best possible way - and no shade on David Benyamine. This, to me, is one of the greatest moments of true poker of all time.
