Major announcement! I will be hosting my very first Netflix Show, called Blown Away which comes out this summer! It’s a competition reality show where 10 glass artist compete for a grand prize with one being eliminated each week! (Release Date: July 12th)
I went up to the Corning Museum of Glass, in up state New York because not only did they contribute to the show in a major way but they also invited me here to do some science experiments inspired by their newest exhibit called New Glass Now.
New Glass Now features 100 of the best pieces of glass art from around the world. The exhibition is actually the outcome of a year long international search where more than 1,400 submissions were considered, so like, we’re about to look at the best of the best
Now one of the pieces immediately spawned an idea for a science experiment and that came from the piece MARS (Mobile Alchemy Research Station) from the artist Lukas Milanak. At first I thought I was just looking at some interpretive art, but then I learned that I was actually looking at a functional hot glass studio that was made from a microwave!! So thank you Lukas for coming up with this concept.

The fact that you can melt glass in microwave blew my mind!!! Did you know this was possible?

Nick Uhas no I had no idea that is so cool

Nick Uhas So this is actually not physically possible because a microwave has a glass plate and it doesn’t melt plus the radiation generated is actually so little. Glass has a melting point of 1600 degrees Celsius and a microwave can only heat up to 100 degrees Celsius

Abby Leonard I think the glass is protected from the micro waves

I've melted glass in a microwave before but not by intent, was still cool when it happened. Specifically this gigantic light bulb the size of a football got so much plasma that the glass started to melt into a puddle

@@abbyleonard3936 note they are using a special crucible and there are different kinds of glass that melt at different temperatures. You can get a glass fusing kit from craft stores to use in the microwave that has a little ceramic kiln like this.

That's really cool. I'm glad to see others still doing microwave experiments. I've melted glass before when microwaving a light bulb, the plasma instead of popping the bulb would melt the glass and I ended up with glass beads on the microwave plate.

no I didn't know about melting glass in a mw. but, you video will help me restore a glass stopper to and antique vase that the top round portion has been lost to the ages. I need to form a mold by the use of carved bees wax. then use this mw method.

I went back and watched a bit right before you mentioned that the microwave excited the sodium in the glass that caused it to accelerate and melt additional glass? I'm trying to understand what is the difference between that black glass that was crushed up and just regular glass that you would put in that nothing would happen why is that
